Zoloft ruined my short term memory. Anyone else? Why is this not listed as a side effect. I took zoloft for a year in the late 90's. My short term memory became terrible while on zoloft. I went off zoloft and it got a little better. But I still have problems. I am not anxious and don't have any other mental problems. Is there any way to get my short term memory back?

TweetyBird replied: "What you have experienced may not be listed as an adverse effect because it didn't show up in clinical trials. I believe there are techniques to improve short term memory. You might want to consult your primary care provider about this. I'm presuming you made your provider aware of your condition back in the late 90s when it occurred."

DisfunctionJunction replied: "Paxil took mine."

faith4ricknlisa replied: "I would like to know if this is a problem with Zoloft too. My gyn placed me on Zoloft to help with the nightsweats as I cannot do HRT. I have been having memory problems since my hysterectomy/Zoloft. Interesting theory."

racer123 replied: "Zoloft was a brief experience that i will never repeat. Stop this avenue now and insist upon 5-10 mg's of Lexapro immediatelly. This grade of medication gradually performs with tender aquity. Give it 4 weeks to reach definite performance. It will not inhibit sexual appetitite and will illicit balanced forethought backed with solid ground. Great stuff to change your world as you no it!"

James G replied: "Just by accident I came across this question, and nearly flipped upon reading it. I too suffered short term memory loss after taking prozac during my middle teens in high school. I am now 26 years old, and have short term memory problems that I know 100% that I hadn't had prior to taking prozac. I stopped taking prozac at 18, yet the side effects remain to some degree. The sexual side effects took about 2 years to wear off, and without prozac, I would become more timid, and often at times stumble on words during a typical conversation. Now, Just last month, I started taking fluxtine and noticed the small side effects returning; sexual, speech, confidence, and so on. My short term memory has still depleated, and I would pay anything to get this back. To anyone who is considering on taking prozac or any other anti-depression, anti-bipolor medication, please think twice."

I came off Zoloft after about 1 year of it and have never felt better. Is Zolft only a short term fix? I was on Zoloft for depression and social anxiety disorder

princess jasmin replied: "i think it fixes the chemical imblances in your brain. i stopped taking it too and i feel much better. good luck to u!!!"

BS replied: "Most meds are just temporary fixes. Depending if your depression is biological or situational, meds usually just give you a chance to work on the things you need to feel better. Unfortunately most docs will have you believe that a pill will permanently make you feel better."

majnun99 replied: "Not necessarily. Some people take it for many years."

kdc replied: "just be careful. often what happens is you come off an anti depressant and for a few weeks after you do feel great, but then everything can turn ugly again. hopefully your doctor had you on a very low dose of zoloft for the last few weeks you were taking it, so your body gets used to it. it's great you feel better :) you are one of the lucky ones."

if someone does get high off 100mg of zoloft... what are the side effects short term and long-term? l think my friend who went on this during a rough part in Life, and recently got his problems resolved.. probably partially from the meds. So now that he has no problems he still takes his meds even a month after he got his Life back ( keep in mind he does take the amount perscribed, and he never abuses). He only went on this dosage because he HAD to. He says he's super happy all the time. And because he Likes thinking about such odd things as cement tiles.. he's worried he's high from the meds. He's not sure what it is Like to be high but he does realize that people usually arent Like this so.. what do you think? is this going to cause him bad health problems in the future? How can we tell if he's high? Please help me - he's bugging the crap out of me! l just got off the phone with him. He said that if this isnt high then he said this is great being super happy, energetic all through the day.

Fritters replied: "I was on Zoloft (100mg) and I found it to be ridiculously strong. I would find myself being overly friend to the check out lady! BUT he is not high. It is simply a matter of the drugs taking effect. Whatever he does he cannot just stop taking it cold turkey. He'll crash and burn. He'll get severe head spins, headaches and feel moody & irritated. Not to mention, just because he's feeling better now is not to say he's fully recovered from what he went through. So my suggestion would be for him to see his doctor, talk about going down to 50mg for a month, then 25mg and then after a few more months slowly weaning himself off them for good."

Could this have effected my short term memory? First off, I should mention that I am much better. Please do not send me referrels to suicide hotlines. This low point in my life is in the PAST. Thank you. Lol anyways...about 3ish years ago, I almost died by overdose of various pills...a lot of them. Ever since then my good memory has been so horrible. Long term is good, short term sucks. Is it possible that overdosing on a lot of random pills could have an impact on memory? I know it might be easier to know what pills they are but do your best to answer. (I took over the counter pills like tylenol ect and perscpt pills for depression, ocd (zoloft, seroquel...ect) PLEASE answer from a scientific point of view. THANKS! my use-to-be good memory, i should say

aneurodoc125 replied: "It might have. Lots of reasons. The toxicity of the drug combination, perhaps your blood pressure was too low to properly perfuse the brain, perhaps your breathing was depressed and your oxygen level was low enough to damage the brain. Would have to know ALL the details of the episode to properly answer your question. Why not see someone at a Memory clinic? "Post hoc, ergo propter hoc" ( after this, therefore because of this) is a common error of logic. What if your problem is unrelated? Depression, for example can mess up your memory so badly you look like an Alzheimer's patient. You may not be suicidal, but are you still depressed? Tylenol OD commonly damages the liver. Buildup of toxic substances like ammonia can affect the brain. I had a patient who would become ataxic and confused "every time I eat salt" Turned out he meant salty foods , especially ham. A high protein diet for one day made the diagnosis."

Animal Master replied: "why did u take pills? they could kill u if u take to many"

Whats the best treatment for short term memory loss? I am a 22 year old college student and I KNOW that i have some memory issues. I constantly forget where i put my keys or forget to take them with me. I forget important deadlines and my friends and family have noticed this in me. what can i do to improve my short term memory. can i take some herbal meds? do some extra sudoku puzzles?? please help me' ps. i should also point out that ive been taking zoloft 100 mg for about 2 months now. but the memory issue has been around before i started taking it. thanks again and please help

Crazeddoglady replied: "How about a pad of paper? Make notes to yourself. Put on the top of the first page - where are my keys? and any other issues you have real trouble with. There's no shame in making lists that you go over everyday."

kylie b replied: "Assuming you do what almost every other college student does, you should probably lay of smoking weed, drinking, and any other illegal drugs for that matter. Try staying sober for a week and see how you gradually regain some mental clarity. It's amazing what a week or two of sobriety can do for you after indulging in the college lifestyle. In addition, grab one of those little notebooks from a school supply store and just keep that and a pen in your pocket wherever you go. That way if you forget something you can always remind yourself wherever you are."

About to take Zoloft for the first time? Heyy everyone! My doctor prescribed me the generic version of Zoloft todayy for the first time and I am a little nervous about taking it. Does it work? Are there any side affects that are short term and/or long term? Has anyone had a rough experience from taking it? A good experience? Please, let me know I am very nervous. It was prescribed to me for anxiety and minor depression.

Van Bo replied: "Zoloft is a little heavy on the side effects, and I believe that Drug Companies push doctors to prescribe it. Effexor is more common, moderate and in my opinion effective for a first shot. However, the best is now here, Mirtazapine with minimal side effects, the best."

Jim replied: "hello, yea i was on zoloft for a couple weeks. it really worked for some people i know, but for me i got nothing but side effects. it gave me a really dry mouth, made me feel groggy and it gave me excessive gas. don't be afraid of trying it. different people different reaction."

swimmer replied: "I'm on Zoloft and I haven't had any side effects with it, but there is a potential for side effects. I am on it with a combination of other medications (I have bipolar disorder) and it has worked well for me. I'm on a very low dose because of the "balance" that the other medications make so that could help prevent side effects. One thing to remember especially with anxiety and antidepressant medications is everyone reacts differently and has different side effects with each medication so it may be a trial and error process until you find the right one that works for you. Good luck!"

Ahorn replied: "Don't take it. Cold-Turkey Quitting on SHORT-TERM Anti-Depressant Use: Is it as bad? For 2.5 - 3 months only, I was on Welbutrin XL (150mg at first, then 300mg) and Zoloft (50mg) for very mild depression (I'd just gotten out of a 1 year relationship) and also, as my doctor suggested, to help me concentrate while I was studying for the bar exam. My psychiatrist didn't think that my situation was very serious, so I'm not sure why she gave me such a strong concoction. At any rate, the week of the bar exam, she took me off of Welbutrin and instead substituted in Provigil (along with the Zoloft) for concentration and focus, and to combat test anxiety. I told myself that after the exam, I'd stop the pills completely. I didn't want to become dependent on them, and honestly, I drink socially and knew that I would reintegrate that into my life after the bar exam but was aware of the danger of mixing alcohol with antidepressant intake. So rather than continuing to see my doctor, I just stopped the pills cold turkey on my own. I have been off all medications for almost exactly one month now. The only noticeable problems I've seen are that I have been congested for the past month, and, more problematic, I don't have as much control over my temper/anger. The first night after the bar exam (and my last day of taking any meds) was a doozie: my temper became so explosive that, at the end of the night, I was screaming in my girlfriend's face during an argument. My temper has since subsided somewhat, but I can tell my anger/temper is still there. So, my questions... 1) Are these incidences/symptoms side effects of quitting the antidepressant/anti-anxiety medication suddenly? If so, why do they happen? And 2) Since a month has passed, is it better to go back to the doctor to try to ween off, even though I wasn't on any of the drugs long term, to avoid any more side effects, or should I just continue to remain clean and ride it out? (I am experiencing no other side effects otherwise)

shekilledhim replied: "I'd consult with your doctor. Perhaps this won't be a short term treatment? I know that for me what started out as "just temporary" medication will prolly need to be taken for a LONG time."

Valet dude replied: "their will be a reaction in your body if you quit cold turkey...including seizures, depending on the medicine. You are basically moving a foundation from which your body was dependent on even if it was for a short term...and the bad thing is that these drugs work directly within our brain and nervous system, you are basically tampering with your neuro-transmitters which these medicines directly effect...You should allow your body to gradually get back to it's normal function by taking lower doses until you can get off them....If you feel fine then just go with it, but would still tell the doctor..."

does zoloft affect memory? i started zoloft a week ago... it's been hell since then. i feel like a zombie(feels like im stoned and walking in a fog all the time). my doctor says to stay with it for another week to see if symptoms subside. i read online that zoloft will make you lose your short term memory is this true? .

shawnnasutton replied: "Same thing happened to me and it never went a away and I was on it for a whole year. I recommend talking to a counselor if you have depression. I stopped taking medication... I think all of it is horrible. My mom was put on so much antidepressants and anti anxiety meds at one point that she was a zombie. Literally, it almost killed her. I recommend stop taking it right away."

Wellbutrin & Zoloft? I'm taking 300mg Wellbutrin and 50mg Zoloft. I'm curious what effects (short term and long term) they have on my brain. I don't think I've noticed anything different except an extreme drop in sex drive. I also seem to be gaining weight easily. What would happen if I just stopped taking them?

lyyman replied: "You don't say how long you have been on them. I'll assume that 150mg was your starter dose of Wellbutrin. It takes about 2 weeks for the XL type to kick in and I'm assuming the same for the Zoloft. It is very important that you don't just stop taking the Wellbutrin because you will likely have a worse time concentrating than if you had never taken it. Most Drs. are aware of this and there are websites that discuss it. The max dosage for Wellbutrin is 600 per day. Get with your Dr. if you get side-affects. The risk of seizure increases with higher doses of XL, but it's less likely than the previous forms."

An Article you May Find to Be Of Some Interest: Against Depression, a Sugar Pill Is Hard to Beat Placebos Improve Mood, Change Brain Chemistry in Majority of Trials of Antidepressants By Shankar Vedantam Washington Post Staff Writer Tuesday, May 7, 2002; Page A01 After thousands of studies, hundreds of millions of prescriptions and tens of billions of dollars in sales, two things are certain about pills that treat depression: Antidepressants like Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft work. And so do sugar pills. A new analysis has found that in the majority of trials conducted by drug companies in recent decades, sugar pills have done as well as -- or better than -- antidepressants. Companies have had to conduct numerous trials to get two that show a positive result, which is the Food and Drug Administration's minimum for approval. What's more, the sugar pills, or placebos, cause profound changes in the same areas of the brain affected by the medicines, according to research published last week. One researcher has ruefully concluded that a higher percentage of depressed patients get better on placebos today than 20 years ago. Placebos -- or dud pills -- have long been used to help scientists separate the "real" effectiveness of medicines from the "illusory" feelings of patients. The placebo effect -- the phenomenon of patients feeling better after they've been treated with dud pills -- is seen throughout the field of medicine. But new research suggests that the placebo may play an extraordinary role in the treatment of depression -- where how people feel spells the difference between sickness and health. The new research may shed light on findings such as those from a trial last month that compared the herbal remedy St. John's wort against Zoloft. St. John's wort fully cured 24 percent of the depressed people who received it, and Zoloft cured 25 percent -- but the placebo fully cured 32 percent. The confounding and controversial findings do not mean that antidepressants do not work. But clinicians and researchers say the results do suggest that Americans may be overestimating the power of the drugs, and that the medicines' greatest benefits may come from the care and concern shown to patients during a clinical trial -- a context that does not exist for millions of patients using the drugs in the real world. "The drugs work, and I prescribe them, but they are not what they are cracked up to be," said Wayne Blackmon, a Washington psychiatrist whose practice largely comprises patients who suffer from depression. "I know from clinical experience the drugs alone don't do the job." [I Have Since Come Across This:] "
