What Does Soma Mean in Answers
Both The Strokes and The Smashing Pumpkins have songs titled Soma. What does this word mean or refer to? I have looked it up in the dictionary and have found no trace of the word.

:) replied: "MEDS"

Leo B replied: "Maybe it's a reference to Brave New World by Aldous Huxley? Lots of people have referenced the book at one stage or another. In the controversial novel people forget about the awful state of the earth / society by taking Soma, a drug that induces euphoria. The State actually has a slogan: A gram is better than a damn. Basically it's a metaphor for happily pretending that all is right with the world when in fact it isn't. I think Huxley may have borrowed the word itself from mythology though...(quick wiki check here)...yes, soma was what the gods drank in the Vedic and Old Persian mythologies, a sort of divine food/beverage. It is also the name of a god or series of gods. Basically it appears to be an entheogen (a drug used in rituals to expand the mind so participants can communicate with their gods and so on.) Not sure which of the two meanings The Strokes or The Smashing Pumpkins are referring to though, depends on the context. Hope that helps!"

Albert arrrrrrrrggh replied: "It was a drug they took in the book Brave New World by Aldous Huxley - it kept them happy and placid and stopped them complaining. edit: just seen the answer above, sorry! "Soma" is Greek for "body", by the way!"

what does bella soma mean? I heard it in chris de burgh's song; the sound of gun

thebigone238 replied: "Q. In the Song The Sound Of A Gun, what do the words Bella Soma mean? A. Bella means Beautiful and Soma comes from the Aldus Huxley book Brave New World. ..."

Pseudonym45 replied: "Bella means Beautiful and Soma comes from the Aldus Huxley book Brave New World. It's the name of the drug people took to forget about the stresses of life. So you have "Beautiful Drug" .The phrase in the song is designed to state that if you wish to, you can just ignore the way gunmen and terrorists try and rule the world - ie take this drug and do nothing - but if you feel it's wrong, do something, pressure people to stop etc. The song itself is all about people caught up in terrorism."

amy l replied: "i thought bella jus meant girl...yay ive been calld beautiful more then i thought :-)"

What does the word SOMA mean? like in the song by The Strokes...

Jim replied: "The body of an individual as contrasted with the mind or psyche."

Joy M replied: "One of two possiblities: an intoxicating drink used in ancient India or the body of an organism."

saehli replied: "Soma is the drug passed out in ”Brave New World” by Aldous Huxley. it is a drug producing good feelings. it is also an Eastern game/play with peculiarly arranged dice! You are welcome"

greppinfunk replied: "The soma, or perikaryon, is the bulbous end of a neuron, containing the cell nucleus. The word soma is Greek, meaning "body"; the soma of a neuron is often called the "cell body". There are many different specialized types of neurons and the size of the soma can range from about 5 micrometres to over 1 millimetre for some of the largest neurons of invertebrates. Neurons (also known as neurones, nerve cells and nerve fibers) are electrically excitable cells in the nervous system that function to process and transmit information. In vertebrate animals, neurons are the core components of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves."

Mark S replied: "The Strokes song is referring to a brand name of Carisoprodol. See below for details. SOMA has a lot of other meanings, as you'll see in the other answers, but this is the one you wanted."

here and now replied: "it means when people ask random weird questions that no one knows the answer to instead of looking in a DICTIONARY"

what does "sawa basi soma kwa bidii" mean in swahili? i really need your help..

steiner1745 replied: "Sawa basi soma kwa bidii means OK, that's enough! Study hard! Sawa = OK, all right. basi = that's enough soma = study, read kwa = with bidii = effort, struggle kwa bidii = hard Hope that helps!"

weilder replied: "Well, it's pretty close... It does essentially translate into "Good, that's enough, now try harder." The funny part is the LITERAL translation. Do you know the American phrase to "buckle down" and work harder? This Swahili phrase literally translates as "pull up your socks" and means to work harder. Just thought you might be interested in that one! :)"

Why does john hate soma so much in Brave New World? In Brave New World by Aldous Huxley there is a character named John who is later nick named the Savage because he comes from the primitive world, so to speak. What I am wondering is how come he hates soma so much? I mean I know it killed his mother but is that really all the reason he hates it or is there more to it than that?

James replied: "He hates it because of what it does to people."

What is the meaning of word SOMA in Greek language? In Gospel of John(Bible)I found about the death of Christ Jesus and in the same chapter a man came to take off the body of Jesus Christ and he asked for Soma of Jesus.

daisy replied: "body:)"

freakknastyy replied: "SOMA is the Greek word for 'the body of Christ'; it's a sacred term because 'the body' is the vessel of life which Christ gave up willing to save mankind."

alsvalia_jackson replied: "SOMA is a sacred orthodox word, meaning "the body of Christ"."

I was prescribed soma (corisprodal) - but in the bottle the pills say DAN? I was prescribed soma (corisprodal) - but in the bottle the pills say DAN on one side witha number on the other side has a number on it. Does this mean that they gave me the wrong pills or are they generic for SOMA? Im assuming that these are Percodans?

the_only_solorose replied: "you assume wrong, they are soma, the DAN you see is the manufacturer not the drug, the drug is identified by the company using the number on the other side."

mis_astro replied: "DAN stamped on the tablets represents the Manufacturer and has nothing to do with they name of the medicine"

Dzogchen replied: "Thats okay I too take soma and mine say Dan also.I did ask the pharmisist and can't recall why they do.It was a couple of years ago,but I know it's ok.You can always call your drug store and ask them about any concerns you might have."

Dynodick replied: "These are Generic Watson Somas. Here; "

what does this paragraph mean to you?? "Our world is not the same as Othello's world. You can't make flivvers without steel-and you can't make tragedies without social instability. The world's stable now. People are happy; they get what they want, and they never want what they can't get...And if anything should go wrong, there's soma. Which you go and chuck out of the window in the name of liberty, Mr. Savage. Liberty!... Expecting Deltas to know what liberty is! And now expecting them to understand Othello! My good boy!... Of course “Othello is better than those feelies”. But that's the price we have to pay for stability. You've got to choose between happiness and what people used to call high art." World Controller Mustapha Mond." what does this mean to you and what imagery does it create? please help?? thank you! More Detail on Othello btw this paragraph is from the novel Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, but i just dont know what its saying so help please?

carlosdavid replied: "When you say othello, are you talking about the game with the same name? if so, the article is just making othello to appear as a good name, they talking good about that game........ if you don't mean the game, then I don't know what to tell you."

Elena S replied: ""The world's stable now" the writer is a shameless liar"
