how do you get admission to a coumadin clinic without cardiac orders? new to the coumadin world and looking for a cheaper way to check my levels...

dat93 replied: "Over the long haul, ( I'm on Cumadin for life) you may want to do home testing. There are several INR machines on the market for home testing depending where you live. I use Coagucheck, and though the initial cost is high, it's cheaper and easier than constant veinous draws. You need a prescription and you do a finger prick. I calibrate my results against the lab on occasion Do a web search and do some comparison shopping. INR Home testing"

what vegetables am i allowed to eat while taking coumadin? the old man that i look after started taking coumadin and we want to know what vegetables he can eat while taking coumadin

iron_shaft1 replied: "I think you can not have Broccoli and many more there it's vitamin K that you should stay away from. Please read the source. Thank you"

ontopofoldsmokie replied: "Coumadin(warfarin) works by blocking the effects of vitamin K. Vitamin K is very important in the normal clotting sequence. You can get vitamin K from various foods. The largest amounts of vitamin K are found in green, leafy vegetables such as turnip greens, broccoli, chard, collard greens, brussel sprouts, etc.. Therefore, eating large amounts of these items may negate much of the effect of coumadin. This does not mean he cannot have green vegetables. It just means that he needs to be consistent with his green veggie diet. The suggestion is no more than one small serving daily. When they check his blood they can adjust for this if he is consistent. Note: green beans are not as high as green, LEAFY veggies because you are eating the pods and beans and not the leaves. Take to you doctor or pharmacist for a list of what is low, moderate and high in vitamin K. Another thing to watch is other medicine. There are a number of other medicines that can interfere with coumadin. They can increase or decrease the effect. Do not take ANY medicine besides what the doctor has prescribed or a pharmacist has okay-ed. This includes over the counter medicines, herbal medicines, home remedies,etc... There are safe medicines he can be given for most ailments. But, get the okay first."

My dads INR was 15 what test need to be done to look for bleeding? My dad was prescribed too much coumadin following a pulminary Embolism his INR was 15 now with Vitamin K int's a 4. What tests should he have done to look for bleeding? Hw shows nothing at this time.

ckm1956 replied: "If's blood counts are stable, and he's not obviously bleeding, then none. A high INR makes it more likely to bleed. It doesn't mean that a person will do so."

What disease will a Coumadin diet benefit? I'm in nursing clinicals and this is one of our questions. I've looked everywhere and can't find anything that would remotely resemble what they are looking for. Any help?

Gary B replied: "Coumadin is a medication, a blood thinner, and is NOT the source of a diet. Coumadin is a blood thinner, typically used in patients with heart attacks and strokes. thinning the blood helps prevent recurrences. Coumadin is also often given temporarily after surgery to prevent clots."

Full mouth dental extractions coumadin/diabetic patient? Just looking for advise/past experiences here. 38 year old female on coumadin, mitral valve replacement 4 yrs ago, in need of full mouth extraction. Doctor doesn't feel need to be taken off coumadin. Diabetic also, type 2. What are recommendations, and how long is healing process? What is a safe liquid diet, since I am diabetic?

Roger K replied: "Your dentist is the best person to ask about the recovery and healing time. Do you have an endocrinologist that you see for your diabetes treatment? I would definitely have a conversation with him/her about this procedure. A diabetes educator/nutritionist would be able to help you a lot with dietary issues and suggestions about foods to eat during the recovery period. What doctor is treating you with the coumadin? I also think you need to talk with that person to discuss the pros and cons of discontinuing the coumadin for a while. To me, the reason you are on cuomadin in the first place may be far more important than the drawbacks of continuing to take it before the dental procedure. I don't know how long you would have have to be off of it for the effects to go away. If it was only a day or two, it may be more feasible than if it was a week. However - do NOT take medical advice from anyone on Y!A. Only your doctors know the details of your medical history and treatment. The rest of us are just guessing. I wish you good luck with this procedure and that you have a very good outcome (sorry - no pun intended)."

Anna E replied: "You need to ask your medical doctor about this as it may depend on the amount of coumadin you take. I had a tooth pulled last year and my doctor recommended I stop taking coumadin for 3 days before extraction even though my dentist did not think it necessary. The dentist stated most doctors don't think it is necessary now, but my MD seemed to think there might be a problem, so I was off of it for 3 days and started back taking it the day after the extraction. Even after not taking if for 3 days, I had a real problem with bleeding and that was with one tooth. However, if your doctor feels you don't need to be taken off and your dentist concurs, go with your doctors feelings, don't ask anyone here."

what foods to avoid while on coumadin? I am looking for a list of foods that you should avoid eating while taking the drug Coumadin or Warfarin can you please tell where I can find such a list thank you

mg1athecat replied: "You want to limit your consumption of foods rich in Vitamin K, e.g. spinach, etc. But your INR should be monitored regularly irrespective of what you're eating or avoiding."

xiaohuli42 replied: "The main one I can think of is concentrated grapefruit juice. People like to drink that as part of dieting, but it inhibits the metabolism of warfarin in the liver. Another one to avoid is St. John's wort, which increases the metabolism of warfarin. A small amount of alcohol increases warfarin's effects, but for alcoholics, the effects are decreased because the liver makes extra enzyme to try to get rid of all the alcohol. There are others if you want to read about them: "

♥ lani s replied: "For the reason that Coumadin works by preventing the formation of clotting factors that are dependent on the ingestion of vitamin K, HIGH INTAKE of foods with high Vitamin K content could weaken the effect of coumadin. Therefore intake of foods that are high in vitamin K should be avoided in large quantities, but not altogether. REMEMBER that you need to eat a balanced diet even when you are in coumadin so it means you need not to avoid all the foods that has Vitamin K but you need to LIMIT HIGH INTAKE of those. High in vitamin K can decrease the effect of coumadin but on the other hand, lowering your vitamin K intake can increase its effect. You then should try to eat a normal, balanced diet keeping the amount of vitamin K the same everyday. Example of foods with large amounts of Vitamin K that high intake should be avoided are as follows: >>Dark green leafy foods and vegetables such as broccoli, spinach, parsley, turnips green, mustard green, brussels sprouts, horse radish, Swiss chard, coriander, collard green, kale, cabbage, etc. >>Liver >>Some legumes and vegetable oils In addition, you have to AVOID intake of cranberries, cranberry juice, or cranberry herbal products. Avoid drinking alcohol too. Those can increase the effects of coumadin and can cause bleeding problems . Chewing tobacco can also alter the effects of Coumadin. As always, it is important to talk to your doctor about the changes of the amount of those foods in your diet.Checking your "INR" is also very important while you are on coumadin."

DVT-Anyone have one in the groin or higher and have surgery to remove it?Did you get off the coumadin then? I was diagnosed with a DVT that traveled from the knee up to the groin area. The clot is about 4" long and is more in the trunk of my body. Only one section is in the groin/leg. People are telling me to have it removed so I can get off the coumadin. I've checked with 2 docs and looked online and all indications are they can remove the clot (after inserting a type of filter to catch the small clots that might break loose and go to my heart or lungs), but I would probably have to still be on coumadin for the rest of my life because the vein is "damaged" and more clots could form there. Is there anyone out there that knows differently? Has had something similar and had it removed? Is living with a huge clot now with no complications..or with complications? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know the state or town you live in if you have docs with different opinions so I can check into it. Thanks for the help!

sexy_shelly2007 replied: "i am 22 years old and i live in albany ny. they found a dvt in my right brachial in my right arm they put me on coumadin and lovanox when my inr got too low. Ive done this now for a little over a year still getting superficial clots the whole time. I had a port put in my chest to have my blood drawn because i have no venous access. I was just in the hospital for 11 days i just got out about a week and a half ago. They found a new dvt in my left lower calf. They placed an ivc filter an inferior vena cava filter about 2 or so weeks again and i haven't had a problem with it. They said that it will prevent the clot from moving to my heart or lungs and that it will prevent any new clot that may form in my lower limbs from moving all though it does not prevent the one in my arm from going anywhere. It gives me some piece of mind knowing it won't go anywhere. I have had the whole coag workup and everything has come back negative no one knows why i clot i just do and basically thats the answer that everyone is giving me right now its frustrating to not know but just treat the symptom. I will be on coumdain for the rest of my life. They kept me in the hospital on heparin until my inr got therapuetic because i got a clot (which is very unusual) on the lovanox which i had to go on because i had knee surgery. I am back on the coumadin again and right now i am therapuetic i have to get my inr drawn through the port once a week right now and its been this way for almost a year but ive had to go on and off again because of surgery's and what not. I am frustrated with the blood draws and the coumadin in general but when finally maintained you will only need to get blood drawn once a month for your inr or at least this is what they tell me... I have to be on coumadin the rest of my life to prevent more clots. I have gone to NY oncology hematology in albany and they are very good. i also got a second opinion from the i think adirondak oncology hematology up in saratoga ny and both docs said the same thing... If i can help in any way feel free to im me on yahoo with sexy_shelly2007 or aim with sillyshelly2002"

Does anyone have antiphospholipid anitbody syndrome? I am on coumadin and it gets spendy going to the lab monthly, I am looking into an at home "inr" monitor. Anyone know of a good one I should buy????

Mary L replied: "Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome Antibodies are blood proteins that fight foreign agents. When they turn against the body's own cells, they are called autoantibodies. This condition is a rare disorder of the immune system. (The immune system - including the thymus gland, the spleen, lymph nodes, special types of tissues in the digestive system and bone marrow, lymphocytes and antibodies - protects the body from foreign substances, cells and tissues.) Is there anybody else out there dealing with Protein S, Pulmonary Embolism, How do you deal? I ahve Protein S and Prothrombin gene mutation 20210A is there anybody out there like me? I have had a pulmonary embolism and superficial clotting. I am on coumadin. What do I have to look forward to?

countrybumpkin replied: "I have had 5 pulmonary embolisms...in a three month period i actually had to have a filter placed in my aorta to prevent further problems. I am lupus anticoagulant..meaning i clot easily i will be on coumadin for the rest of my life...I have to be tested weekly due to the lupus and the coumadin don't seem to want to regulate in me. The best thing you can do is to be sure and have your blood checked as often as you can too thin and you bleed to thick and you clot.....I hope you can regulate yours however my doctor has told me they are coming out with a new medicine that works better than coumadin ever thought of and testing as often will not be necessary anymore. Best of luck to you."

hello replied: "Below is a good support for you to join that have many other people that have the same clotting disorders that you have. You really aren't alone. Really, if you keep your INR in range you should be fine. Have your family members tested for these though as they are genetic. I have Lupus, APS, Lp(a) and MTHFR."
