has anyone taken effexor and wellbutrin together? My doctor just put me on it and says that I should take effexor for a week and then add wellbutrin. What do you think?

stacypeacock1967 replied: "I am a Registered Nurse, and have worked inpatient mental health for 15 + years, home hx for mental health & depression for 2, and 5 as an Alcohol/Drug rehab specialist. Those two meds, when taken together should certainly have a positive effect on your mood/general outlook"

Les replied: "I say go ahead. I took both of them and Im fine"

obsidianna replied: "I had been on wellbutrin for some time when my doctor tried putting me on effexor. The combined side effects of the two (chiefly the dry mouth!) were awful - I gave up on the effexor after less than a week. The wellbutrin on its own has been very effective for me though - if you had to choose one or the other, it's definitely the one I'd recommend. It differs from person to person though - if your doctor has suggested it, you might as well give it a shot, it's not like there's any danger of the two interacting badly. Hope that helped ;)"

Effexor and Wellbutrin together...weight gain? Anyone who has been on both of these together, please let me know your experiance with weight. Also if you have tried prozac on it's own as well as the Eff and Well (obviosly not at same time as prozac). I'm interested in the Effexor and Well together, not individually. Thanks very much.

lucifur replied: "Effexor made me gain weight but It also gave my night sweats & tremors. I take welbutrin & I have no side effects..... normally you take welbutrin or the effexor...not both at the same time...."

RTWING replied: "I have taken effexor for years . I got tired of the side effects and am tranitioning to wellbutrin. since cutting back on effexor I have been able to drop 50lbs and blood pressure is down. I plan on getting off of all and hope to be able to not need them at all. good luck."

Jody replied: "No weight gain and no negative sexual side effects. I love them both. Effexor should not be given to those subject to anorexia, and neither should Wellbutrin because of the possibility of weight loss. Prozac causes weight gain and neg sexual side effects. Zoloft does not cause weight gain or neg sexual side effects."

Effexor? Wellbutrin? Help!!!? I was taking Effexor XR for panic disorder, loved it but completely lost sex drive. Needless to say, this has caused problems....I tapered off of that (yikes! still getting brain zaps/hot flashes) about 5 weeks ago, started Wellbutrin XL 150mg...now taking 300mg....has helped the sex drive a little, but is majorly wreaking havoc with my anxiety. I feel like I've been on meth for the past month. Can't handle it. Do I go back to Effexor and no sex? Does taking both together work?

radiofaller replied: "My advice is just to be careful coming off wellbutrin (and I do recommend coming off it, it's sick). The problem is that wellbutrin is such a stimulant that if you have anxiety problems it's just not worth whatever benefits you may get from it. I made the mistake of stopping cold turkey, about the same dosage as you, and believe me it was not fun. Night was day, day was night, sick sick sick all the time. Took me weeks to feel normal. I guess I would recommend trying something diff for your panic disorder."

ropar replied: "You need to go back and explain this to the doc. There`s dozens of drugs out there, which you probably shouldn`t mix."

phylobri replied: "Do not worry there still are more alternatives the doctor can try. I used to take effexor and my doctor put me on Celexa. There is also paxil, zoloft and prozac. Call your doctor and make an appointment."

malaryush11 replied: "Have you considered trying something else for the anxiety that won't interfere w/ your sex drive? A benzo perhaps. I also take 300mg of Wellbutrin, which helped the depression. I'm also taking 150mg Zoloft which helps w/ anxiety. I tapered down to 100mg and haven't noticed a change. Consider something additional to help the anxiety. Check out crazymeds.org. They have a host of meds listed and their symptoms. Perhaps you can find a med that helps w/ anxiety w/out affecting your sex drive. Good luck."

Julie replied: "Effexor works on serotonin and norepinephrine, wellbutrin just works on the norepinephrine. sounds like you may need the serotonin action for your anxiety, which is typical - but the medications that affect the serotonin generally have sexual side effects. The only other one right now out there in the same class of drugs as Effexor is Cymbalta - but you will probably experience the same sexual side effects on that one as you did with Effexor - still it may be worth a shot. Ask the doc. FYI - Cymbalata is not as toxic when you are discontinuing it, so maybe the side effects are less. It does sometimes affect vision though - and Effexor generally does not"

Rockford replied: "I would take the Effexor XR and 150mg or even 100 mg of Wellbutrin. That's what I did with my Lexapro. I found 300mg of wellbutrin was too much and made me anxious like you. The other thing you could do is take one or both and every weekend stop the effexor on thursday or friday night and start it again on sunday evening. You would still get the antidepressant effect because of the long half-life. This is called a weekend pill holiday. You have to experiment and do whats best for you. And of course discuss it with your doctor just to be safe."

twila915 replied: "I'm right there with you..... I was on effexor for about 4 years, I loved it too, I thought.... Maybe I was just in a complete fog. I gained 20lbs so I tapered off and went on Wellbutrin. The world seems like a completely different place than it was 2 weeks ago. I feel like a ticking bomb! I'm irritated, angry and sad all at the same time. I don't know if I am having with-drawls from effexor, adjusting to Wellbutrin, or both.... I want to stick it out at least six weeks and see how I'm feeling but after reading you have been on it for 5 weeks and still feel the same I'm worried that I may need serotonin to feel normal again. I need help too....."

tragic 35 replied: "Yeah Wellbutrin is pretty stimulating, and has given me a few anger episodes. If i feel too anxious my doctor has prescribed Ativan or Klonopin to keep me from panic. they both work well, and I just take them as needed. I appreciate Wellbutrin as a antidepressant, and on days I get too anxious, i just take an Ativan. Always talk to Dr. and/or Pharmacists."

has anyone ever taken wellbutrin? and effexor together? If so how well did it work for you?

prtybrwneyez1 replied: "Ihave only taken wellbutrin and lexapro together. I stopped taking the wellbutrin because it did nothing for me at all. I was taking it to help manage anxiety and ADHD. The lexapro is working fine by itself for depression. I'm going to go back to my doc and see what else he might offer to help with ADHD. But everyone is different and I've heard good things about welbutrin. try it for at least a month."

Zeppelina replied: "medicines work differently in different bodies. the chemistry is different. just because something did/did not work for someone else doesn't mean it is/is not going to work for you. Talk to your doctor."

I have been taking Effexor (75mgs) daily, for the past four years.? I have been taking effexor (75mgs) daily for the past four years, and at times, a stronger dose, but I still have depression. My doctor prescribed Wellbutrin xl, 150 mgs to take as well. I am supposed to take the effexor at night and the Wellbutrin in the mornings. I havn't started the wellbutrin yet, because I want to find out if anyone out there has taken the two together, and if so, what are the results?

Kris replied: "Yes, I was on that combination for a few years and it definitely helped me more than Wellbutrin or Effexor alone. ""

Violet Pearl replied: "If you are taking anti-depressants (which work to elevate seratonin levels in your brain), and they are not enough--you are still not feeling happy, content, or at peace, you may have low endorphins. Adding another drug won't help."

Natalya replied: "I'm currently on Effexor, 75mgs daily, but it's early days so not sure if it's going to work well. If you're unhappy about the idea of taking two drugs at the same time, why don't you ask your doctor if you can either just take the Wellbutrin, or if you can try another anti depressant altogether? If you do end up stopping the Effexor, remember to cut it down really, really slowly, to avoid withdrawal problems. Good luck with it."

yellowskiing replied: "Wellbutrin augments the Effexor, makes it work better. I work for psychiatrists and this is a very usual practice if the Effexor alone is not working."

postalbb replied: "I was taking Effexor and Wellbutrin together for a while until the effexor kicked in. I had been taking Wellbutrin and another medicine and was trying to get to a place where I could take just one. My doctor saw me every week until I was stablized on the new medicines then he saw me every two weeks and then every 4 weeks and now I don't have to go see him for 4 months. If your doctor thinks this will help, and you do it, just pay attention to your body and your emotions. You will know if something feels worse or better. If you notice you feel better, great! If you notice you have any different feelings, anger, tired, not sleeping, thoughts that are not good, call the doctor right away. I am always going to have depression, it is a disease, I just treat it with the Effexor, and for right now, it works for me. I keep a journal to help me keep track of how I am doing, and listen to my feelings more, and allow myself to be sad sometimes and I bounce back from the sadness and anger more like a normal person does. Good luck to you."

fibromite05 replied: "I took both of these medications together and had no side effects form the combination. However, I did start to get very aggressive and hateful and hadto stop the Wellbutrin. My husband takes it and he's fine, so it just depends on your body chemistry. Also it depends if you really trust your doc. You might ask the pharmacist as they know a lot more about meds than a doc. I now take Effexor (150mg) and Buspar (45mg). However, due to my fibro I am allergic to many meds and you may not be."

Is this a good medicine mixture? I have been suffering from depression since I was 13. I've been on a lot of meds (Prozac, Effexor, Wellbutrin, Lexapro, etc). The only one I found to work was name brand Prozac but now I cant afford it (no insurance). I was put on Cymbalta a week and a half ago (starting at 30 mg and now I've moved up to 60 mg). So far Im doing well. The doctor mentioned putting me on Trazadone also for depression, along with Cymbalta. I was wondering if anyone is taking these two meds together also and how well is it working? Any side effects?

SUSAN K replied: "alot of these medicines have side effects and no guarantee that they will work natural treatments have no side effects and are not that expensive they are good for your health also eat healthy and get plenty of sleep check curezone.com safeharbor.com"

Jen replied: "If the Cymbalta is working well for you then I wouldn't rush into adding another medication. Try with just the 60mg Cymbalta for at least 3 months before deciding to add in something else, because often there is no real need to use two different drugs."

Electric Zaps in head... NOT withdrawal? I am currently on 150mg of Effexor XR as well as 300mg Wellbutrin. In the beginning it worked so well!!! I know what "electric head" or the zaps that are common with withdrawal from effexor are as I once tried to wean off of it. However, now I am having the zappy feeling but I have NOT decrease nor changed my regimen of medicine. I have had lots of twitching when falling asleep and during sleep I have been told I almost seem like I am having a seizure because I twitch rapidly! Talking to my doctor, she said these twitches are side effects and we together decided to not change anything because the effect of the medicine was worth twitching while sleeping. My concern now with the electric zaps can effexor or wellbutrin have damaging neurologic effects? Any thoughts? Any similar experiences? (And I WILL be talking to professionals but in my experience, sometimes it's people with similar situations that help best!) Thank you.

yours truley replied: "my mom had the same thing when she was on it!!!!! she had to wean herself off of it one little ball at a time, it got so bad she coudlent drive or function. do reaserch and get off it!!!!!! effexor that is.does it usually happen before you take the pills? its becasue the pills wore off and your body needs more would you really like to stick with this medication and keep feeling the zaps and vertigo? i dont think so"

carvermanone replied: "these "zaps" are not damaging to your brain. They are a minor side effect of the drugs. The best you can do is stay with your program. If you cut back the side effects would be much worse and could possibly do more harm than good. I Know."

justusadams4 replied: "I have BOTH of the symptoms you mention with Effexor XR. It's funny because I only got the brain zaps before when trying to wean off of 75m when I was pregnant a couple years back. But when my dose was increased from 75mg to 150mg a few months ago, I had the zaps ALL the time. they suck. I was also on Remeron at night too, I don't know if that made a difference. Now I'm on 225mg of Effexor and 100mg of Seroquel at night and the zaps are gone for the most part. but I still get the twitching BIG time. I often wonder what long term effects I will have form taking this stuff. But overall I guess I'm willing to deal with the side effects if it means I don't feel "crazy" all the time. :) It's nice to know I'm not the only one who's going through this stuff."

SSRI side effects? i have been on (wish side effects in brackets): cipralex wellbutrin (drowsiness) celexa (drowsiness) zoloft (headaches, low blood pressure, confusion) paxill (extreme suicidal thoughts, horrible drug!) Effexor (low blood pressure, headaches, drowsiness, swimmy head) The only one I have liked so far is cipralex. Does anyone know of any SSRI's or other anti-depressants that have few side effects? I feel like I am running out of options. right now I am on wellbutrin and cipralex together, but I want to switch the wellbutrin out because of the drowsiness. any ideas? * with side effects in brackets* lol

donnatella replied: "cymbalta are relatively knew and Ive heard they dont have bad side effects. Im on seroxat and never had side effects, same with lexapro"

cassie a replied: "Well I am on lamictal...idk the classification. I've been on too many to remember them all...not to mention I was completley burnt out tho....but yea, I've been happy since taking lamictal"

黒いサファイア/Black Sapphire replied: "Dosage of antidepressants varies, depending on the type of drug and the person’s body chemistry, age, and, sometimes, body weight. I have some list of antidepressant medications. Other SSRI meds. are Prozac (Fluoxetine HCI) and Desyrel (Trazodone). Side effects: > insomnia (meds should be taken in the morning) > priapism (for male side effect) > lightheadedness > constipation Other anti-depressant meds are the TCA (Tricyclics Antidepressants) and MAOI (Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor) For TCA: 1. Elavil (Amytryptiline HCI) 2. Tofranil (Imipramine HCI) 3. Sinequan (Doxepramine HCI) Side effects: > weight gain > increased appetite > insomnia (meds should be taken in the morning) > obesity For MAOI: 1. Marplan (Isocarboxacid) 2. Nardil (Phenelzine SO4) 3. Parnate (Tranycypromine SO4) Side effects: May cause hypertensive crisis if taken with tyramine-rich foods like fermented wines, beer, aged cheese, raisin, papaya, avocado, all internal organs, carrots. Note: Consult your doctor first before your decide to change medications."

does it ever get any better with tiredness/depression? I'm wondering how any of you have combated the fatigue factor with depression? I know it's a process that you have to just battle through sometimes, but it's tough to "fake" like you have energy though. Certainly, I know positive thoughts are good and what not, but to me thoughts can only get you so far. If your body's physically tired (like mine certainly is daily), then your physically tired. I'm seeing my psychiatrist again on Friday and together we're still trying to figure out a recipe to solve the tiredness. Recently, we've added wellbutrin XL to the 300 mg of Effexor XR I take in the morning (the dosages are so high mainly just to see if ANY dosage works to fix the tired feelings). Has anyone beaten the tiredness with depression? I'm talking genuinely beat it. Hell, if anyone has alleviated their tiredness to where they can find the energy to energetically talk with friends and answer phone calls I'd be happy to hear it. -Travis

salaud80 replied: "Strange as it sounds, I had a regimen of vigorous exercise along with medicine. That surely helped me. Good luck."

chaphodg replied: "listen i'm no shrink but i can tell you i've been dealing with a whole lot of depression. disabled, stuck in the house and live in the northeast(not a pleasant time), listen just stick in there and think of planting some vegatables or flowers"

who is #1? replied: "Your psychiatrist should be fired because s/he does not understand the cause of depression and energy loss. Treating the symptoms with drugs doesn't address the issue, you must look at what is causing it. What's causing it is resentment. Resentment=judgment=Pride, which is in the business of denying/suppressing "the truth" (whatever that is in this case) so that the ego can BE truth, deciding with your (not so) Godlike ability what is good and evil. When the world does not obey your will, judgment=resentment=depression and it saps your strength. Because your energy is getting sucked down the black hole, dragging you down with it, which is depressing. If you resent the fact that you are a slave to the negativity living in your head, now you've created a feedback loop; thinking makes you feel which makes you think which makes you feel, etc. Death spiral. Eliminate the cause and the symptoms go away =you're free. How to give up the anger, frustration, etc? Below is a free exercise which works. If you are willing to look at yourself objectively (and what you think is yourself but is just the contamination from past wrong reactions which has made a home in you, like a spiritual virus). If the Doc doesn't look to causes, s/he is a fraud or incompetent."

Sean T replied: "It will, but you have to find that thing that gets you going. Some do gardening, some exersice whatever you like to do. Get rest and professional help. Don't rely on drugs, many times diet can play a huge role in this. We have gone to buying fresh and cooking ourselves. Varying meat , doing diabetic and vegetarian diets etc to spice it up. Rely on a confident and friend to help you through this time as well. Keep your chin up and work through this! You can do it."
