zen replied: "The first med I took was Trazodone! It did get me to sleep, but, ahhh, the night terrors weren't tons-o-fun! And I felt just totally DUH the next day. Like a human slug in a dream state, and not euphorically! I take Paxil, three med, no four med tries later. It works for MOI!"
faithful0522 replied: "Well first off depression and sleep go hand and hand. You may be depressed because you are not sleeping OR you may be not sleeping because you are depressed. You need to figure which issue you are having before you can treat it. If you are concerned with sleep more than depression you could try some Benadryl at night just to help with sleep. Most drugs take a while to get stabilized into your system so the "loopy" feeling maybe your body trying to adjust. If it is unbearable ask your doc about something else. Drugs effect different people in different ways so just because Desryl (Trazodone) did not help you does not mean that something like Klonipin, Prozac, or Abilify may help with. As a side note drinking with any med can be dangerous, if not monitored, as it increases the effect of the drug. Wedmd.com is a great site for drug and medical information fi you want to research."
When can I expect my trazodone to start working? I have insomnia.
My doctor prescribed amitriptylene. The first night I took it I was asleep within 5 minutes. It worked great, however the side effects were more than I could deal with it, so I went off it.
He has now prescribed trazodone, 50 mg. I took it around 10:45. I finally fell asleep around midnight, but woke up again at 1:30 and have been unable to get back to sleep.
Do I need to allow it to accumulate in my system, or is this just not going to work for me?
FlyfreeIzzieUCSD replied: "for sleep, it should be working pretty quick like the amitriptyline did.. .it's also a tryclclic antidepressant and common issue its used for is insomnia as is trazadone....
if you were on it for depression, it would take awhile but for sleep, you would know quite fast.... 50mg is the normal dose too so its likely you need somthing else...
there is another drug too.. another tryclcic.... i cant recall the name jjust yet.... ohh.. i think nortriptaline.. or something like that... i believe and its used for insomnia, bed wetting and other stuff... .i know it made me very very sleepy personally....
it's common fir tryclicis in particular to cause a lot of side effects.. thats a big problem with them however they often help for insomnia and not addicitive..
there is one sleep med out now that isnt supposed to be addictive and for long term use..... I think thats Rozerum... its supposed to work with your natural sleep cycle and much like melatonin which is a natural remedy....
also using sleep hygeine methods along with your meds mighr really help your insomnia after awhile....
good fortune"
Taking Ativan/ Valium for stress? I take 60 mg Celexa and 50 mg Trazodone nightly. I've been on this for 3 years. Should I ask my Dr for .5mg Ativan 1x day to calm me down in the evenings? Would it knock me out too much to watch my kids? I', 5'6'' 128 lbs. Is .5 mg enough?
Answer Fairy replied: "It depends on you. Personally, I can take 4 times that amount and be perfectly fine, just a little more mellow. My sister takes the same amount and she sleeps for 10 hours straight.
I suggest you call a sitter and try it out. Go to a friends house and see what happens to you."
Medication combo for my mother, see a problem? My mother, whom I have not visited with in 5 years came to see me. We immediately noticed she was SUPER hyper, at times seemed incoherent, distracted, fidgeting. She acted almost like someone on speed. She has always battled severe mental health issues around depression, anxiety. My mother is the sweetest and most sincere person I've ever know, but I fear a train wreck is coming. Listed below are the medications she takes. Does anyone with knowledge see anything that might interact in a bad way? Also, would it be appropriate for me to sneak and contact her doctor and express my concern?
Medications:
1. Starts her day with 600 mg of Ibuprofen for a bad back.
2. Prilosec 20 mg 1 time daily
3. Generic Prozac 20 mg 1 time daily
4. Thyroid 32.5 mg chew 8 tablets (equal to 240 mg). morning daily
5. Estrabiol 3 1 mg tablets
6. Trazodone 50 mg 2 tablets nightly to sleep
7. Lorazepam 1 mg up to 2 tablets daily
8. Tylenol almost daily for pain.
To me, this is pure insanity for a 62 year old woman to be on these kinds of medication. During the day she is bouncing off the walls like a crazed person and crashes at night.
Sar replied: "Most of the drugs she is on are fairly common and are seen in combinations in alot of people.
The prozac is a relatively low dose - she may want to be seen to check adequate response to that - the side effects of prozac can cause anxiety, insomnia, or restlessness in some
The thyroid medication seems on the high side - has she recently had her thyroid checked? if the dose is too high - it could cause some of the symptoms you have listed.
I would have her talk to her doctor especially if she is incoherent"
How can I make my Trazodone work efficiently? I was prescribed 100 mg of Trazodone a night by my nurse practitioner. However, the variations of its effects are very maddening. Some nights, it works within 15 minutes and I sleep a good 8.5 to 9 hours. Other nights, I get dizzy and listless, but I absolutely cannot sleep. I would think that it should work the same every night. I usually take it two hours after a meal and I'm comfortable. I don't take anything that should counterract it unless Lexapro is some secret stimulant that I wasn't informed of :) Anyway, I'm just looking for advice on how to fall asleep within a half hour or so while taking Trazodone. Thank you.
Roxye replied: "I take a higher dose, but I usually take mine with a piece of bread or a spoon full of peanut butter.
I have heard about others that take it this way report an increase in the time of absorption. They have to take it about 3 hours after a full meal.
Either way, know that most of the time Trazodone takes at least a full hour to reach levels that help with sleep."
