How long does it take for stomach pain from penicillin to go away? I had my wisdom teeth taken out a week ago, and everything is fine with my mouth. But, I was prescribed penicillin (500 mg, 4 times per day) and started to have a bad reaction to it about 4 days into the penicillin treatment. I had diarrhea for days and really bad stomach pain. The oral surgeon (who prescribed the penicillin) said to stop taking it and that the pain will go away. But, it's been a couple days now, and I'm still in pain. Apparently, this is a common side effect of penicillin. If you've had this experience, how long did it take for the stomach pain to go away after you stopped taking penicillin? Thanks!

David C replied: "sounds like the body rejected the penicillin in the same way it would any bug getting into the stomach. the stomach lining will be sensitive for a few more days probably but the main thing is the bacteria in the stomach and gut need to recover so keep off the spicy foods."

Should I continue taking my antibiotics? I had a minor ear infection, so my family doctor prescribed me penicillin (antibiotics) for 7 days, 3 per day. On the side effects, it says I may get diarrhea. Yesterday, the diarrhea began to take effect and now, it's really getting bad. I've taken it for 4 days so far out of 7. Should I continue, or stop? I'm contacting my doctor tomorrow, thx for all the input, but I wanted to see what you guys thought.

monserelizabeth replied: "I would call your Dr and ask them. Drink lots of water to replace what your losing!"

weirdrach2004 replied: "let your doctor know that you are having that side effect and how serious it has become. they are the ones who should be telling you whether or not you should stop taking your meds...never stop unless directed by your physician"

renetta1.brooks replied: "if i were you, i would consult my doctor....depending on how SEVERE the diarrhea is; they may tell you to discontinue the medication. no one else would be able to help you solve this problem except him because we dont know exactly what kind of pain you are in."

Mandy replied: "call your doctor. they will know the real answer, dont listen to people on here, they arent doctors"

Godsdaughter replied: "Contact your Doctor."

lameredechat replied: "TAKE THEM TIL THEY ARE GONE!!!!!!"

clinton c replied: "You should take it for the full 7 days and call your doctor about the side effects or just deal with it until you're done with the medication"

James replied: "eating yogut or other bacteria based foods help alot , trust me but u should still continue to take your meds"

Difference bewteen Amoxicillin and Penicillin? My friend's baby has his second ear infection. The first time the doctor gave him Penicillin (the white kind?) and now Amoxicillin. Why is that? Both times her son gets diarrhea and a bad rash from it. The doctor has prescribed a cream or the rash but my friend says she stops the antibiotic because the cream isn't working fast enough. This is all i know so far from speaking to her earlier, she wanted me to ask for her. Her baby 6 1/2 months old.

ᴉᴎᴋᴇᴅ ᴍᴀᴍᴀ ♥ ᴛᴛᴄ ♯² ♥ replied: "Penicillin is a broad spectrum anti biotic. Generally used when they know infection is present, but not 100% sure exactly what infection. Amoxicillin is a more specific anti biotic. Some infections do not respond to some antibiotics, that why we have specific ones. Diarohoea / constipation are really common side effects of any anti biotic, especially in kids. As for the rash - that would indicate allergy to me - is the cream an anti-histamine? Id get a second opinion, as Penicillin is a really common allergy."

Is it good to drink milk? The text is too long but worthwhile read....? es esta pagina link The most important information dissemination my. Not that, but I can make your text too long jajaja. If I write bad is that I am leading a translator jaja

Terri replied: "wow. Looks like you had allot of thought to this. My thoughts to this. People have been drinking milk for positively centuries and millenia. If you like it, drink it. If you don't, don't."

JenasaurusX replied: "Excellent essay. is that your writing or are you quoting someone? If it's the latter can you provide a citation or link to where you found it? I'd like to keep that in my personal folder of veg resources. On another note: How come every time I try to post a long question it tells me I'm out of room?"

Amy replied: "Wow that was long. I used to drink milk when I was a kid and I would always be coughing, getting ear infection, my thoat would hurt and the list goes on. All of that went away when I stopped drinking milk. I'm gonna star your "question" because I really liked it and it is so important. How where you able to post such a long question? I don't think I can do that."

Encantar replied: "I know more about milk than most people. I used to milk cows for a living as a young person. Then I was a pasteurisor in a dairy. Prior to that I went to agricultural college, but with respect, I haven´t time to read your "very" long question. Milk is very good for you. Semi skimmed is better for dietary concerns, but above all it is the best way to get the necessary calcium your body needs."

sarah s replied: "No antibiotics are allowed in milk for human consumption. None. Not low levels, NONE. Milk is checked many many times before it reaches the table. So if you are against it, don't drink it! Why worry about what we are doing? It's our choice! Oh, and don't cook your food either. By the way, did you know that ants milk aphids? Is that unnatural too?"

klm78_2001 replied: "I only read half of this before I got a little bored, sorry. Some of your references are wrong though, be sure to make the noninsignificant differentiation between BGH, a naturally occuring hormone that cows produce in order to produce milk, and rBGH or recombinant bovine growth hormone, the lab-produced hormone that is injected into cows in order to increase their milk production. Oh, and people drink goat's milk and sheep's milk, too, and have for thousands of years. There are probably other animals that are milked, too. Also, I've seen adult cats and dogs drink milk, actually knocking the top off of the colostrum milk container in the barn so they can reach the milk. It was almost really good, but your sources weren't all exactly on. If you're turning that in for credit, you might want to double check those."

lo_mcg replied: "Who wrote this? You don't credit it, but it wasn't you; it says 'I had one patient who...'. You say elsewhere that you're 17. I'm a vegan, but this essay has pissed me off. It is reproduced in shortened form inthe Cancer forum, titled 'Breast cancer and dairy???????' The text doesn't mention breast cancer, though. Users of the Cancer forum are very used to people, often teenagers as here but always people who haven't had or studied cancer, posting their half-baked theories about what causes cancer and lecturing us on how to avoid or cure it."

xo_ahhmaziing_22 replied: "I drink organic milk. All milk is taken from cows that have been given the bovine growth horomones. These horomones make the cows have boils on the insides of their udders & sometimes they pop & leak pus into the milk. So unless you buy milk that says 'not treated by cows w/ bovine growth horomones' you are drinking up to 45% pus. go organic"

Vegan_Baybee replied: "And The Question Is?"

Flexetarian Vegan replied: "I couldn't make it all the way through your dribble. Milk is good and good for you."

Are these normal side effects- PLEASE HELP!? SORRY IF GROSS, BUT PLEASE HELP! I took antibiotics for 10 days. I took Augmentin for 3 days but had to stop taking it because of the side effects (chills, bloody diarrhea, stomach cramps). My doctor switched me to regular penicillin for the last 7 days. Monday-Saturday taking the meds I was fine. On Saturday I got mild diarrhea- I thought it could have been from the yogurt I was eating. On Sunday it was about the same. Monday- Started clearing up- Last day on Penicillin Tuesday Afternoon- diarrhea came back with stomach cramps. Still not really bad. Wednesday- WORST DAY! Horrible diarrhea once an hour, stomach cramps. Ate some yogurt for lunch and it got a little better. Thursday- A little better but still diarrhea and stomach cramps. Sometimes bad cramps with no diarrhea. Friday- It is still early, but I have diarrhea today and stomach cramps. Are these normal side effects for this medicine or should I go back to the doctor?

Heather R replied: "It's really hard to say, because diarrhea is a normal side effect of antibiotics. However, it could be a potentially dangerous side effect also. If it doesn't clear up, I would go back to the doctor. Also, if you are dehydrated (dizzy, dark urine, ashy skin) you need to go back to the doctor right away. I hope you feel better soon! Good Luck!"

jackie_jabar replied: "Go back to the doctor because he changed your antibiotics and you are having major stomach problems."

fingerlickinchicken replied: "diarrhoea can be a side effect of antibiotics-but not always.it sounds as though you have definitely reacted adversely to the tablets which should be mentioned to the doctor so it can go on your records.i would certainly ring the doc today to tell them what has been happening.i personally would have stopped the antibiotics by now and rung the doc to threaten violence!!!!!ha ha ha ha ha - i joke!! make sure you stay well hydrated.try and get hold of some dioralyte. these are little sachets you make up with water to help rehydrate you and rebalance lost nutrients during episodes of diarrhoea. its really important to try fluids even though you probably feel lousy. basically, ring the doctor and ask for either an appointment or a call back for advice.if i was in work and one of my patients had your symptoms,i would have called the doctor to review them and the tabs would probably have been stopped. hope you feel much better soon xx"

Stomach Bug or Medicine Reaction? I have been taking a penicillin -amoxicillin mix of antibiotics for strep throat and pink eye. I have also been using eye drops for my pink eye. Both seemed to be getting better but last night I got severe diarrhea with blood, and stomach cramps. The blood is gone, but I have had the diarrhea and cramps all day. I stopped taking my antibiotic today and the symptoms seem to be going away. I am going to call the doctor first thing tomorrow morning, but I am wondering is this just a stomach bug or am I having a reaction to the medicine. I haven't ever had any problem with this before. I don't know if it makes a difference, but I also took a decongestant, and ibprofen while I was taking the antibiotic.

gigischildcare replied: "it sounds like a reaction to me."

buckeye_babe95 replied: "it definitley could be a side effect----once i had a severe reaction to an antibiotic that started with diarrhea and vomiting and general malaise...I kept saying "I can't believe I feel so horrible and I am on an anitbiotic!" Guess what, it ended up being the antibiotic and I was a very sick individual for a very long time. Watch for hives and be on the alert for any other symptoms and do not hesitate to either put a call in to your dr. tonight or go to the ER. Good luck!"

sick guinea pig help? hey everyone...as you may have guessed from the question title, i have a sick guinea pig. about 1 week ago i noticed her eating alittle less..but silly me didnt think much of it. she coughed a bit for acouple of days but that stopped and theres no congestion. anyway, i took her to the vet today but he obviously doesnt deal with guinea pigs cos he prescribed a penicillin based antibiotic.. we got it replaced with baytril as soon as we realised (she had been given 1 dose of the penicillin aready, 2 drops, so im really worried about her). shes stopped eating and is being syringe fed. shes also had diarrhea but now hasnt gone for a while. iv been told that i need to get a probiotic, but i live in australia and dont know exactly what to get or where from, so if any one here is from australia and can help in anyway, me and my guinea pig would greatly appreciate it. also any tips on encouraging her to eat on her own, or even just getting her to drink, would be so helpful. sorry everyone, silly me i didnt even think to add her age, she's 1 year and 10 months old. she gets a special guinea pig mixture which has pellets and seeds and other grainy things through it. but ontop of that we feed her a mixture of vegetable scraps from the kitchen (not potato or anything harmful), grass from outside (i make sure its not poisoned) and when ever possible i also add fruit to her diet. i make sure i dont go over the top with lettuce or cabbage cos i know it can cause diarrhea. she's never been sick before until recently, its been really humid and alittle cold cos its been raining alot, but shes an indoor guinea pig so she doesnt get wet. if any other information is needed jst ask. i was told to mash up her normal food and syringe feed it to her with extra vitamins added, because a complete change n diet nearly always causes alot of stress in guinea pigs, and complete diet change while she is sick could cause even more problems. so i have been doing that, aswell and giving her water through the syringe. the baytril seems to be starting to work, she is looking alittle more active and even nibbled at some hay today.

aestatisa replied: "My experience is greater with ferrets than guinea pigs, but the most important thing I've learned about dealing with an odd pet is to find a good vet early. You need to consult with a vet about your pet. I found this emergency guide to guinea pig health, which may help you some. The Australian Cavy Sanctuary might help you. They have a message board, and might be able to direct you to a good vet or at least where to find the correct medicine. Your pet will probably not start eating on her own until she starts to regain her health. Keep food available in her cage, but continue the syringe feeding until you are certain that she's eating enough on her own. Good luck!"

tlh replied: "The baytril should start working with in a few days if no change by day 7 then you need to return to your vet and get him to do the job he is paid for and find the information himself regarding guinea pigs. I have a vet like this and to be honest living in rural areas its a pain as they only deal with large stock animals. And yes i told them to get the info as i was paying for a service that they werent providing. Right food wise if she wont eat hard food then put food in a food processor and add water to mash it down to a liquid, that can be syringe fed(it sounds odd and will smell nasty but works) if this doesn't work then your vet should have a product that can be added to water it turns the water pinky red that is supposed to be for large animals but works on rabbits and guinea pigs as well, it contains nutrients etc i cant remember the name of it, but i have used it on both animals when they refused to eat. see how that goes and keep an eye on the diarrhea, if it turns bloody then get back in touch with your vet asap."

Pet lover replied: "What i would suggest is get a syringe and feed water or a water based food using the syringe. How old is your guinea??? If it is old it might be its time or it could be constipation. As prey animals, guinea pigs have evolved to hide any signs of illness as long as possbile in order to avoid becoming targets for predation. This can make it difficult to recognize an unhealthy cavy without prior experience. Any cavy that is immobile for unusual lengths of time, is not eating or drinking, and is breathing in a labored or irregular manner could very well be ill. They should have clean eyes; a thin milk-like liquid occasionally appearing around their tear ducts is normal and is used for cleaning themselves, but dry crust, redness (some guinea pigs have naturally pink-colored eyes) or other signs of major irritation are a red flag. They should have clean coats free of tangles, dreads, and fecal matter. Parasites may not usually be visible to the naked eye, but the best way to check for them is to place the cavy carefully on its back and check the belly. Their feet should be clean-looking and not red or irritated; with no broken or extraordinarily long nails. Here is a address for hand feeding jackiesguineapiggies.com/handfeedingyourguineapig.html"

blackandpink95 replied: "I think that maybe you aren't feeding her right. you are probably giving her too much dry food, and no veg. try getting more of an expsensive brand of dry food. Give her veg thrice daily, and fresh fruit would be good too. clean the water bottle daily or whenever you feel it is dirty. give her fresh grass and hay daily or have one of those cute little racks that you can hang up on the wall of the hutch. maybe you aren't cleaning her properly and she is being put off. she could also be pining for a friend, or maybe (did she have a friend who recently died?) she is crying from the loss of a friend or other guinea pig. I am so sorry she is ill, I hope she gets better. give her my love!"

cavylover90 replied: "You need to see a certified EXOTICS veterinarian. Never take any treatment advice given by a veterinarian who does not specialize in treating you animal! What are you syringe feeding her with? How much, how often? Diarrhea is likely from the penicillin based anti-biotic, she will need a probiotic to restore her gut flora. Diarrhea is a life threatening problem, caused by intestinal issues.. which is likely secondary to the penniccilin. You can get a probiotic from an exotics veterinarian. Lactobacillus would probably be your best option. You can get lactobacillus at a drug store, but dosing would be based on health evaluation and weight, which is where the vet is needed. Regarding your pellets, guinea pigs require a plain pellet. No grains, they are very damaging towards their health, as well as the other little "treats" in the pellets. Plain, timothy based pellets. Nothing more. Is your guinea pig getting a constant supply of grass hay? You need to stop feeding all of the veggies and fruits, and just hay and pellets. Constant supply of hay, which is required in their diet when they are healthy, and even more important when they are ill. Supplementing with vitamin C is essential when they're ill, and especially if veggies are no longer being fed. You can a supplement through an exotics veterinarian, or buy 100% pure vitamin C unflavoured supplements at a drug store. 25mg a day, crush up the vitamin C in water, and with a small syringe force it into her. Your guinea pig is EXTREMELY sick. You need to see an exotics veterinarian ASAP, for proper treatment. Guinea pigs health deteriorates rapidly, making treatment needed to be within the next 2-3 days. Their life depends on it. What is your guinea pigs diagnosis? Upper Respiratory Infection? I'm not in Australia, but have a lot of experience and resources. Feel free to e-mail me at. Also, please post your health and medical problems on the GuineaLynx forum. GuineaLynx is the best care, emergency, and medical guide for guinea pigs. It's written by exotic vets, and other extremely experienced people. They will be extremely helpful: Forum: Artile on Upper Respiratory Infections: Not eating: Assist feeding: Goodluck, feel free to email me if you need further assistance. I hope your piggie pulls through."

Is this a sign of coming off constipation? So recently I have been on Ibuprofen (600 mg) and Penicillin because I got my wisdom teeth out Thursday. Ever since like Friday I believe I was constipated because I had a hard time going poop and when I did it was very little. So starting yesterday afternoon I stopped taking the Ibuprofen. This morning I've been having tons of gas in my stomach (you know how it makes that kinda gurgling noise) and have pooped 3 times. 2 out of 3 times were kind of diarrhea though. Is this all normal coming off from being constipated? Having to go alot and also having like a mild diarrhea? Please help and Thanks!

MANDERS replied: "Yeah that is normal. The pills probably had you blocked up and when you passed the blockage, all the stuff behind it rushed out."

dasher replied: "I have never heard of coming off constipation ! Have you been eating fruit every day? Since you havent gone in a while, it sounds like your body is now emptying out. So, if that is a sign of coming off constipation, then yes. Try having a fiber one yogurt once a day to help your bowels calm down."

Swine Flu? Immune Disorder? Okay so. I'm going to explain everything from years ago to now. Last year, i missed 36 days of school because i was frequently sick. I have enlarged tonsils that are referred to as "kissing tonsils". We figured that is what made me constantly sick. I was scheduled to get them out in June, but i chickened out. I wasn't sick the whole Summer. School started on August 25th, and i have already missed 6 out of 13 days. The second week of school i was out for 4 days due to what we thought was Tonsillitis. I was prescribed to be on Penicillin last Saturday which was September 5th. I was advised to take 3 pills a day for 10 days. Since school is now in session, and i wake up at 7am, i only took 2 pills last Sunday, and Monday (weekends i wake up late, so it would be considered my second pill by the time i wake up) so i would be on schedule to take my 1st at 7am on school days. I was experiencing stomach pains and some diarrhea/loose stool on Sunday (the first day i took the pill), and we thought it was because of the pill. I didn't want the upset stomach at school from taking the pill in the morning, especially because i already missed 4 days. So i didn't take the pill at all last Tuesday, or Wednesday. But on Thursday i was home sick again with a relapse of the sore throat, stomach pains, and diarrhea (tonsillitis), so i took 3 pills that day of the Penicillin and i have been taking 3 pills a day ever since. And have felt fine. I missed last Thursday, and Friday of school. I am so behind it really isn't funny. This is my last year before high school, and i really don't want to miss as much as i did last year! I can't afford to! But 30 minutes or so ago, i got a stuffy nose, head, dizziness, and got flashes with sweating, and a clammy head. I told my mom, and she told me to take my temperature. I took it and i had a mild fever! I mean, i have been sick non stop since September 1st. I have also been taking Antibiotics for a week, so HOW AM I SICK!? Do i have an immunity disorder? Swine Flu?

Jello F replied: "i suggest you and your parent look up colloidal silver. also bob beck protocol. dont believe the media hype of swine flu and i dont recommend that swine vaccine..pretty dangerous dont you think?"
