Can Prozac cause migraines? I have been on prozac for more than 6 months and have been getting Migraines approx. every two weeks for the past few months. Coud this be caused by my prozac? I don't care about your personal views on my medication, so if you would kindly keep them to yourself I would appreciate it.

Samurai replied: "Prozac is poison. Get off of it. "

k-rock replied: "I'm not sure if that could be the cause. I have a friend at work who has started taking Prozac to prevent her migraines. She said it has really helped. She said she had other issues besides headaches going on. I'm considering asking my doctor about using it for headache prevention. I guess it could have different effects on different people."

Can prozac cause chronic migraines? I started with a pretty stressful job back in sept 07. Back in march of this year i had a panic attack, my GERD (acid reflux) got worse as well. Acid constantly got up in my esophogus and burned in my chest, neck, and throat. They said it was anxiety, put me on zanax. A few weeks into the low dosage of about 0.25mg twice a day from what i recall, i felt sick, started feeling dizzy, migraines started more frequently. I stopped taking it and for the last 3-4 weeks have been on prozac. Ive seen a neurologist (just gave me topamax), gastrologist,(getting a upper scope in a week), and primary doctor for which just gave me migraine (balbutal) meds, ibprofiin, and nasal spray, thinking it could be allergies as well. All this time ive had the dry mouth, migraines, fatigue (ive lost about 14 pounds sense march), and i dont know what to do. This migraine has been chronic as far back as i remember taking anxiety pills. Could me just not taking prozac anymore solve my problem? Thank you. also, can i just stop taking it or should i gradually stop taking this pill? I dont want anymore harm done. thx i bring this up because before taking any anxiety meds, i never had a migraine, this bad, everyday. I found this link with someone with the same problem. >
Just Google It replied: "Prozac isn't know to cause migraines and you should never go off any anti-depression without a doctor's supervision and you must taper them or else you'll go insane! Kidding about the insane part."

Sara M replied: "When I was on prozac it really didn't take effect until a month and a half after I started taking it. I don't think that the prozac would cause you to have chronic migraines though. And as for stopping it, you haven't been on it that long for it to have a full effect on you. if you were taking it for a while yeah you should come off of it gradually...but I don't see why you should just couldn't stop now. You should talk to your doctor and ask him what might be causing your migraines."

DeltaQueen replied: "HI there, let me start by saying that you should never come off of anti depressants with out being under a doctors watch. It is very dangerous and you can really have bad reactions. I almost lost my son, because he did it alone. (please if you don't listen to another piece of advice you get, please, please take this one) The symptoms that you describe such as dry mouth, fatigue and weight loss certainly could be related to Prozac, I'm not sure about migraines though, I'm sorry. It seems that your doctor would have mentioned it though. There are other anti depressant that they can try you on. It is very common to have to try 2 or 3 different ones until you find the one that is right for you and your body chemistry. I found mine on the 3rd try and it was Zoloft. I can safely say it saved my life!! Have you tryed the topamax for your headaches yet?? It is A-1 for migraines, so before you start readjusting your anti depressants I would definetly give the topamax a try. I urge you to google topamax before taking it though and read the side effects, there are many. You many not have any effects at all, but its best you know what to look for. Also.....nasal spray, give me hella headaches, so I don't know how long you have been using it, but you might think about the timing there. I hope you start to feel bette soon!! I wish you luck, peace and happiness!"

Migraines??? I have read some of your answers for other women with my same problem.. I have went to the doctor over and over again since i was like 5 years old about these migraines.. they went away when i hit puberty as well, and came back very bad when i started using birth control. I would get migraines for 3 weeks out of the month, and no matter how much asperin i would take, they would just came back with in hours.. or wouldnt go away at all.. Well soon enough I stopped talking the birth control pills all together, they arent as frequate as before, but i still get them about 3 days before my period.. I told my doctor that i stopped using the birth control and that i was still getting the migraines, and that i believed they were from hormones... he suggested that i take prozac, since im not able to take birth control... can anyone give me some other ideas besides taking antidepressents???????... p.s. sry my spell check isn't working lol I dont throw up, but feel like i need to most of the time. When i have migraines half of the time i dont remember talking to people i talked to on the phone or even in person. Sleeping doesnt help, most of the time it just makes it worse, Sometimes when i lay down they will go away, but as soon as i stand up, even when its slowly.. they come back 10 times worse, and have to lay back down. its probably both head aches and migraines.. i just need some good advice.. i dont want to take some medication that is going to leave me basically dead to the world.....

Jacqueline A replied: "You seem to be confusing hormonal headaches with migraines. Do you have vomiting? Does the migraine wake you up in the morning? Blurry speech? Intolerance to light? Nausea?"

izzie55 replied: "You should go to a neurologist they will find the right medicine combination for your migraines. They don't make you dead to the world, they control your migraines. Everyone gets bad headaches and cramps right before their period though."

kelly e replied: "I feel your pain as I often get bad headaches with my periods. I guess I would classify them as a migraine as I can't "function" - I doubt prozac is the right drug. However I have tried drugs and nothing helped. I find if I watch my diet (no red wine, lunch meat cut down on salt) and exercise - and +++ the water it helps. Lately they come and stay for days. My 8 year old actually has classic migraines that she sees light, vomits and is out of commission. Nothing is really able to help her but rest, time and motrin (if she keeps it down). I'd see another doctor - or a headache specialist."

Tash * replied: "I go thru hell with migraines. I find the best thing is a hot water bottle on your neck or head or hot shower. The pain you experience during an attack is caused by the constriction of blood vessels. Heat promotes expansion of the blood vessels thus alleviating the pain. It works very well and I can literally feel the tension and pain slip away. Also try Nurofen Migraine. It contains an amino acid which helps deliver the pain killer straight to the area required. They work for me."

chase replied: "I have suffered debilitating classic migraines all my life from the age 0f 7y.o, Vomiting slurred speech, blindness,I used to have Pethidine injections,go home and sleep, but as Iam maturing now they get less frequent and severe, they run in our family, Antidepressants may help, but there are medications on the market nowadays you can take each day to stop the onset of them, I also had a cluster of them a few years back, 16 straight days with them, I finally went to a chiropractor, he fixed me up after 3 visits.I also used acupuncture that was a success, with out drugs. Good Luck"

I am pregnant 17 weeks and have really bad depression/anxiety and terrible migraines all the time. My doctor? prescribed 40 mgs prozac and 50 mg fioricets as needed for bad migraines. Do you think this is safe? I wouldn't take it if my condition wasn't so severe. Im really concerned about the fioricet though. It was just prescribed today. My headaches will last for days though sometimes and i've tried tylenol. Anyone had experience with these medications while pregnant?

rosie replied: "I would be very concerned about taking prozac during pregnancy. I don't know about the fiorocet. You shouldn't take any meds when pregnant but I understand your dilema. It is safe to take a couple of Tylenol now and then. I would go see a Naturapath or enrol in a relaxation class. Yoga? Make an appointment to see a psychotherapist to deal with your depression. It's worth it!!!!"

Liz replied: "What did the pharmacy said?? did they aprove it or called your doctor about the medicine?? i was probably worst i been on the hospital twice im 18 weeks pregnant. i been having such a hard time is my first preg. try to relax and take the pain. you don't want to harm the baby."

Bubbels replied: "The Prozac is fine my doctor said it is very save. The fioricets I don't know so I can't help with that.Did you try to do ant excise during your pregnancy like Yoga .It will help you to relax much more.I also suffer from chronic anxiety.Good luck it is not easy."

Jill replied: "While certain meds like Prozac are generally contraindicated during pregnancy, your doctor has to decide on whether the benefits it will provide you with outweigh any potential risks to the baby. Obviously your doctor believes you need the medication and will benefit, and that the risks to baby are minimal. Have a little faith in your doctors. They wouldn't prescribe highly dangerous drugs to you. Many drugs are listed as potentially harmful to a baby, but generally speaking risks are often very minimal. Good luck!"

Veritas replied: "If your depression is overwhelming the benefits of taking Prozac would probably outweigh the possible risks to the baby. I'm sure your doctor did not make these decisions lightly. All of these drugs are well-researched and are prescribed only when truly needed. I hope you will be feeling better and stronger as your pregnancy progresses and that perhaps you can begin to cut back on the dosages. Have you tried prayer for your depression and anxiety? Ask God every day to help you."

What should I know about Prozac? My Dr. just started me on Prozac; i get migraines and she wanted me to try it and see if it helps. Anything I should know?

FF Momma ~MEAN GIRL~ replied: "I'm a migrain sufferer of 30+ years. Never once been prescribed and anti-depressant. They have me on Fioricet..but if they think yours are hormone induced migraines that could be the reason for the prozac. BUT....I'll tell you this....it will change your personality. I've known many friends on it...and it made me sad each time someone new was prescribed it. It makes you emotionless."

Callahan replied: "I was on generic Prozac for panic attacks and, instead of being anxious all the time, I was emotionally numb. I also gained a lot of weight (no knots in my stomach = an appetite I've never had before). I'd rather be anxious than numb, so I stopped taking it."

chemtale replied: "this is what you should know about prozac... "

Pablo replied: "I have never heard of Prozac to treat migraine. See below. PROZAC is one of the world's most widely prescribed antidepressants. Medicine. There are two ways to approach the treatment of migraine headache with drugs: prevent the attacks, or relieve the symptoms during the attacks. Many people with migraine use both forms of treatment. Some medicines used to help prevent attacks include drugs that were designed to treat epilepsy and depression. To relieve symptoms during attacks, your doctor may start by telling you to take over-the-counter drugs such as aspirin, acetaminophen, or NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like ibuprofen. If these drugs don’t work to give you relief, your doctor can prescribe types of drugs called ergotamines or triptans. Ergotamines narrow the blood vessels, which helps the migraine’s throbbing pain. Triptans are new types of drugs that relieve pain by both narrowing blood vessels and balancing the chemicals in the brain. Hormone therapy may help some women whose migraines seem to be linked to their menstrual cycle. Work with your doctor to choose the best medicine for you."

Mixing Prozac with Birth Control Yasmin? I have been getting these awful migraines every day that make me unable to do much. I believe it is from mixing my Prozac with Yasmin. I never got them when i was taking the Prozac alone. Is this a side effect from taking the two together?? Help?

Sceve replied: "go for it!"

K_C_S replied: "Could be the Yasmin, I'm prone to migraines, have been one a few different types of birth control and found the Yasmin increased the freq. of my migraines. I'm on Ortho-cylcen, because ortho-tricyclen gave me migraines when it changed hormone levels each week. Seems to be much better"

Gefilte Girl replied: "Those don't cause migraines, please."

caylo2ooo replied: "birth control pills are noted for causing bad headaches. they can also increase blood pressure and cause strokes. so, if they are bothering you this much, i would try something else and see if it makes a difference."

Leigh replied: "It could be the Prozac. If you are really concerned and want the headaches to stop, consult your doctor and ask him/her what to do."

Sara replied: "i used a check drug intercations from walgreens.com to find out and it said there were not any. One of the side effects of yaz is headaches. I was taking prozac and I use ortho evra and didn't have any problems. Although headaches is a side effect of using prozac. So this what you may be experiencing. I didnt care for the prozac so I asked my dr to switch me and he recommended Effexor. For me personally it was way better than the prozac and I didnt have any side effects. Check with your doctor and let him know about the side effects so he can get you on something else. Also check with him because certain types of medications lower the effectiveness of birth control"

Can you take Imitrix with Prozac? I take Prozac for depression. I am giving a retirement party and am worried about getting a migraine and was wondering if i can take imitrix. I have a prescription for it.

SAK replied: "The best way to get your answer-call your pharmacist. They are the ones who know of your prescriptions-the dosage amounts, etc. And, they know how each medication works, side effects, etc. In fact, if you can go talk with your pharmacist in person-that is much better. I like talking with my pharmacist face to face. I know which one I am speaking with, and if I have another quesiton come to mind at the time, I can ask right then and there as opposed to having hung up, and needing to call back. Take care."

Carrie replied: "There are many people who take this combination safely. A very small percentage of people who take this combination experience something called serotoninergic syndrome, which can include agitation and jitteriness. It's because Prozac (fluoxetine) boosts the amount of serotonin between brain cells that use this chemical to communicate. On top of that, the Imitrex (sumatriptan) stimulates the brain cells' chemical receptors for serotonin. Thus, there is a double activation, which again, for most people is not a problem."

Is it safe to occasionally take tramadol for migraine if your'e on prozac and thyroxine? I've been on thyroxine since birth as I was born without a thyroid gland and have been on a dose of 150 micrograms a day for the past decade. I also take prozac most of the year for SAD (we dont get much sunshine in scotland!) Occasionally I get migraines and recently a friend gave me a couple of Tramadol for the pain and they eased it very quickly. Usually I have to take painkillers and lie in the dark for ages just to take the edge off! Anyhoo, what im wondering is, is it safe to take tramadol very occasionally while I am on the other medications? The information online regarding this is very confusing! Thanks people!

kathy replied: "Yes, it is safe. I've had 2 medical doctors prescribe it to me while I was taking prozac & a narcotic for pain in addition to a muscle relaxer. My sister takes it for pain along with her migraines. In my personal opinion, I don't believe Tramadol is strong enough for migraines. I think you need to take one of the medications for migraines. May God bless you, K"

miguel t replied: "This will help you. The difference of the migraine with the headache, is that it is more complex. They do not want that they speak to them, look for the darkness, walk with the eyes I happen enclosures, nauseas, they cannot stand to see television and any physical alteration they increases the trouble, (it gives them more frequently the women). I suffered from migraine since I have use of reason. I went to several doctors and they did not solve the problem, with the years I learned of my own experience. My problem is with the food and accelerates the by situations of stress, (the being inclined to the migraine, already produces stress, for it inopportune). That it is necessary to avoid: Yellow cheeses, stuffed (it he seems for the preserving ones, seemingly the Nitrites), grains, eggs, yogurt, chocolate, coconut, fast food (Hamburgers, hot dogs, pizzas, Arturo's chickens.etc). How I discovered it? When I suspects in a food with coconut, stop eating it for one week, I turned to eating and THE MIGRAINE come again. This way I tried Migraine with others food The worst thing, the migraine does not remove the hunger and it could continue abusing.. It is necessary to to spread the consumption of this food. With a soft diet I could eliminate the migraine and already I do not suffer for it, for which when they give me, eventually, they are medical in case of emergency: Tablets for the headache that they combine acetaminofen, acid acetilsalicílico and caffeine (Atamel Forte). Eno Fruit Salt. Pepsicola or Coca Cola (you relieve the erutar) To be sick (I do not recommend it) To be purged. Do not stop taking a one coffee in the morning. I do not drink, because of it I cannot refer to the alcoholic drinks, Escuse my poor English I am from Venezuela Luck"

Anyone take Lexapro for Migraines? I have severe hormonal Migraines. I'm on Topomax daily and I take Frova when I get a Migraine. However, I'm still getting migraines around my cycle. My doctor had me on Prozac for awhile and that seemed to help for a few months, but it finally quit working. Now he wants me to take Lexapro. I tried it for 3 days and quit because I could barely keep my eyes open. I was wondering if anyone has taken Lexapro for Migraines and if it is worth taking.

√☺♥Ñēshc_09♥☺√ replied: "NO i DONT OR HAVENT iN THE PAST"

WiserAngel replied: "I didn't know it was prescribed for migraines. It's a depression and anxiety drug. You always feel like crap the first couple weeks on a new anti-depressant. You have to give it a chance, although I question the use of Lexapro to treat migraines."

Abbygirl replied: "Relpax is what you want to take for cycle migrains. That is what my Dr. put me on, and I am going through the same thing you are on. Lexapro does not help for migraines whatso ever. Lexapro is for people who need an antidepressants. In other words. Dr.'s just want to give you something because they do not know what to do. But Have them send you to a Nerve, Dr. Nerologist. I believe they are called. They are the best type of Dr.'s to know what to do."

Rockford replied: "I used to be on topamax for migraines too. I never had one while on it. I took 200mg daily. You might want to talk to your doctor about taking a betablocker like Atenenol or Inderal during your cycle. It's a high blood pressure medication that slows your heart beat down a bit so your head doesn't pound. I was on Lexapro for a while with my topamax for depression and I found it too tiring by itself too. My doctor added 150 mg of Welbutrin to it. So for a while, I was on topamax, lexapro and wellbutrin. It was a good combo for depression, but I don't see how lexapro or wellbutrin would help for migraines. I may be wrong."

Some Dude replied: "There's a new development in migraine therapy: "

jcss_003 replied: "No I have not, I take it for depression (and it's also prescribed for anxiety) You really need to talk to your doctor about this adverse effect. However with depression at least the results are not seen for at least 3 weeks as your body is adapting to it. Talk to your doctor again about it."

prozac and headaches? Is Prozac known to cause headaches or migraines? I am on it for bulimia and after my dosage was upped I have been getting some of the wrost headaches!!!!

fixer29 replied: "yeah, they usually pass after a week or so."

Ken J replied: "Prozac has been identified as the treatment for depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and bulimia nervosa. However, in several cases, Prozac in an off-label state successfully utilized for treating panic disorders. Acute and severe headaches on Prozac consumption may lead to several harmful side effects. The common physical disorders noticed due to the adoption of Prozac medication include: An anxious state of mind or unfavorable nervousness Uncomfortable sleepless nights A kind of dizziness Excessive pain in the head Diarrhea and discernable skin eruptions Severe headaches on Prozac consumption and continuous malfunctioning of the digestive system leading to weight loss rather than weight gain results in weakening of the entire physiological condition of the individual. Most of the side effects generally evade after the completion of the first or the second week but severe cases of acute headaches and sexual disorders persist for a longer duration of time."

sacredbrittni replied: "My mom takes this as well for her clinical depression. She too said it gave her headaches I think it's a possible side effect."
