If someone took paxil for 5 years 20 mg and only had a little weigh and minor side effects ,will lexapro be ok? Does lexapro wok better than paxil. Is there less sexual side effects with Lexopro. I was on Paxil and it worked wonders for mood, just wondering if lexapro 10mg will do the same.

PPwallawalla replied: "I know the miracle solution. It isn't drugs or therapy. It is yourself. When I was born, much like yourself, I was born to be self sufficient so long as I drink and eat. Of course in a natural world there is only water, meat, fruits and vegetables. Seeing as how that isn't the case I suggest that you ween yourself off of those hard drugs, get sober and only drink water and eat fruits, veggies and things of that sort. Humans become addicted to these drugs and they want to believe that they cannot be stable or happy without them when in reality they are a prison for your mind and life. You might feel happy but so do cocaine addicts when they get there fix. Good luck."

Greenize replied: "Some medications work better for some people, and not for others. That's why there are so many. I have been on nearly every antidepressant made, including paxil and lexapro, and don't remember anything special about either one, except that the withdrawal from paxil was horrible. I'm not sure about sexual side effects. The only one I've heard of that doesn't create sexual side effects is Wellbutrin, but there are probably others. The only medication that caused any excess weight gain for me is Wellbutrin. Trust your doctor to find the best medication for you, and let the doctor know of any effects, good or bad, of the meds, so they can be adjusted accordingly."

Paul A replied: "I take Wellbutrin SR (150 mg) in the morning, and Lexapro (10 mg) in the evening, for depression and anxiety. I've been taking that for over a year and a half, and it's working very well for me. The Wellbutrin SR seems to help me to be more alert and active - and wanting to do things - while the Lexapro makes me more mellow, and it helps me sleep better, too. They are relatively low doses of each medication, which keeps side effects at a minimum. I really can't tell I'm taking any medication at all. The last time I was in the doctor office, I had lost 8 lbs - not a lot, but in the right direction. I give the Wellbutrin SR the credit for the weight loss, since it does help me to be more active."

Is being very dizzy a side effect of stopping taking lexapro 20 mg? I have been on lexapro 20mg for two years now and stopped taking it cold turkey I amvery dizzy.Is this a side effect?

Joe replied: "It sure can be! Most meds in this drug class can cause some side effects of this nature. Headaches, tired, dizzy, etc. It will pass in a few days. Consult your doctor though because stopping cold turkey can promote seizures in certain medications. Was this a doctors idea or your decision? Usually tapering is recommended, but again, talk to a doctor or get a consultation."

Gia replied: "Yes, dizziness is a side affect of stopping Lexapro, especially stopping it so quickly! Speak with your doctor about side affects of taking the medication. He or she may need to gradually need to reduce the dosage and you may need to continue taking it in small amounts for awhile to prevent more serious side affects, like withdrawal."

Lawrence B replied: "definitely dizziness, brain "shocks", vertigo and headaches. I came off it about 1 year ago and it was miserable. It will be over around a week and you will feel better."

DEB M replied: "I have taken lexapro and you should never stop cold turkey on any anti depressants. You have gradually come off of it. The dizziness that you are experiencing is because you stopped cold turkey and you did come of it gradually and you are going through withdrawal because of how you came off of it."

Lexapro sexual side effects? I have been taking lexapro 20-mg for OCD. It has really helped. Unfortunately, I seem to be experiencing some sexual side effects. It takes a lot longer than normal to reach ejaculation and my sex drive is not what it once was. Would switching to 10-mg be likely to help?

Dr.Dee replied: "All SSRI's (selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors -- the class of drugs that Lexapro belongs to) are known to cause certain sexual side effects which *may* include: a decreased sex drive, ejaculation problems, impotence (also known as erectile dysfunction or ED), decreased sexual satisfaction, and/or orgasm problems. The most common side effect in those reporting, is delayed ejaculation. Talk to your physician. Athough adjusting the medication *may* relieve your unpleasant side effects, it may also reduce the effectiveness of the medication towards treating your OCD. Also, side effects may diminish somewhat once your body fully-adjusts to the medication. It is important to note that you should not stop taking Lexapro without first talking to your physican. He/she may need to gradually reduce the dose before ceasing your medication completely. Suddenly stopping Lexapro, particularly from higher doses-- may cause unpleasant and potentially serious side effects. Take care, and best of luck."

Increased Lexapro from 20 to 30 mg a day? My psychiatrist just increased my dose, to try and lower my xanax intake, since I'm not getting perfect results with 20 mg Lexapro. I'm wondering if I will have any side effects from the increase. Does anyone know or been in this spot?

Yes that is me... replied: "I use to take Lexapro and I went from a low dosage and built to 300 mg a day. The side effect I got it made me sleepy but that is the only thing. It does take a while for your body to adjust to Lexapro and your doc is building you up. He/she might not be done adding on so just be patient and tell your doctor your concerns bc that might also not be the right drug for you to take. Lexapro side effects???? Ok, so I took Celexa 20 mg for around 4 and 1/2 years. Of course I experienced sexual side effects and was unable to have orgasms. So In March, my doctor put me on Lamictal 200 mg for mood swings thinking that I could stop taking the Celexa soon after and just be on Lamictal. (It's been great and I felt better than I have ever...of course the sex thing REALLY sucks) I could tell a major difference when I stopped taking the Celexa so he said I could stay on it. (This was about 3 months ago) I work in the medical industry and had heard that Lexapro was almost the same as Celexa with less side effects. So last week I got my doc to switch me.....I didnt notice much at first....but Ive been feeling pretty off lately and I was EXTREMELY jittery today. Im not sure if its the Lex and Lamictal or if its bc I took some ambien. (I always took ambien with my Lam and Celexa and this never happened) Oh and I also take generic Adderall Any thoughts?

I knew somone who took ambien and got really messed up to the point of hospitilization they may have taken too much but spooked me about that stuff. Don't know about the over stuff ask dr pharmistst i also take klonepin when needed which is useful metatoprol less so hope was helpful"

Emily S replied: "My b/f is on Lexapro 10mg for about a month now for anxiety attacks. It took him about 2 weeks to notice the effects and side effects of this medicine. It works great, the attacks have almost completely stopped, but he has been EXTREMELY drowsy almost all of the time if he's not working. When he's home, his mental state is fine, but all he wants to do is sit around. Not sure that this will help you, but just wanted you to know something another person was experiencing. GOOD LUCK!!"

Having no side effects at all when i miss many doses of lexapro? I have read how a lot of people have horrible side effects from not taking lexapro even for one day.. i have taken it everyday now for about 2 weeks and feel more like a zombie. A few months agoi would forget to take it 4-5 days at a time and wouldnt have any side effects. But now that i am on it again there is no sex drive. I feel like cutting down my 20 mg to 10 mg a day or go every other day

He is the one who could advise you on how much you should be taking but he can't do this unless you tell him how you are feeling. Don't skip any doses because this could mess up your body system and give mixed signals as to what side effects you have. Talk to your doctor and try taking your medication every day and at the same time or close to the same time as you can."

Let the Dr. know what's going on and see if you could try something else instead. You shouldn't take it upon yourself to change your dosage, and leave that up to the professionals."

Paul A replied: "You can cut the 20 mg pills in half - there is a score on the pill for doing that. That way you're more consistent with the medication by taking it daily. And, it saves money, too... 30 20 mg pills is cheaper than 60 10 mg pills!! You didn't say how long you've been taking it, if you've been taking it more than a couple months and feel like a zombie, you're likely on too strong of a dose. Cutting back in that case should take care of the zombie problem - and help a lot with the sexual side effects."

paradoxotaur replied: "Lexapro! I was on that once! I should not be this excited about recognizing medications I've been on... Don't panic. Your psychiatrist knows what s/he's doing. I know that whenever I'm prescribed anything, from my psychiatrist or my primary care, they'll first ask what I'm already on. You've likely filled out forms with that information. If you're still worried, I'd recommend giving your doctor a call."

Bud replied: "It is a question I asked my pharmacist. I took both for years with no side effects. However, individuals react differently to the same medications. Both of the meds you are taking are very low doses so you should not have anything to worry about."

Never had side effects on Lexapro before. It appears I have one now. How come? I am a 44 yo male. My dose of Lexapro was increased 3 weeks ago from 10 to 20 mg. Since the increase, my libido has greatly diminished. This is the first time on Lexapro where I've experienced a side effect. I have been on and off it almost 3 years including times on the 20 mg. During these times being on 20 mg, I have never had ANY side effect. Why do I have a side effect now when I didn't before? Thanks.

robert c replied: "i did the lexapro thing for about 5 years went from 10m to 20mg as well. and yes it will whack out the sex drive, not as bad as paxil but it still sucks, 10mg is not very strong and i felt i was spinning my wheels with nothing to show so i got the bump up to 20 mg than the first thing you feel is a slowing of your libido, so my doc put me on androgel to boost the testosterone levels to counter the lexapro, it helped but was silly expensive, i stopped cold turkey with everything lexapro and all due to the fact it all just started to jack with me to much, you have to choose feeling better moods or haveing better sex,"

Gabe replied: "my starting dose was 20 mg, but i didnt have any bad side effects besides the inability to reach sexual climax. you should work with your doctor and tell him what yoru feeling, but since youve been on one dose half the strength for years, it might make it weird for a while to go up tha tmuch"

Tsunami replied: "i was taking 20 and never had problems my depression is not sleeping anyhow but you can take a sleeping pill and take those early in the morning. they are good and i use the generic now which is cheaper."

I experienced uncomfortable side-effects during the first few weeks, such as sweating and feeling weird. I think the "benefits" of the medication are kicking in now because I feel more energetic today, not manic or anything, but this feeling is making me a bit concerned. I haven't slept in the past two days & my insomnia is getting worse despite Ambien. Strange thing is although I haven't slep in the past two days I feel totally fine. Quite odd. Hopefully I won't become hypomanic; lunatic fringe kinda thing."

18 weeks pregnant!! replied: "I hated lexapro with a passion! They told me that it had not many side effects and since im a smaller person with horrible anxiety they decided to put me on it and I started at 5mg. I had burning sensations on my arms and couldnt sleep, I got a huge lump in my throat, felt short of breathe, which couldve been the massive anxiety attacks I would get on lexapro but only ativan would calm me down. So I had to switch to something else. I think it works differently for everyone so don't worry its all normal. I would definitley call your doctor tomorrow morning and let them know your side effects and maybe they can switch you to either something else or give you something to help subside the side effects.
