Anyone else taking Imuran for Crohns disease? Just curious as to how your doing and how long you have taken it?

hlhsx3 replied: "Hi! I am not taking it for Crohn's but for ulcerative colitis. That along with asacol and for the past year or so Remicaid infusions. The Remicaid is the best thing that has ever happened to me! I have had colitis since I was 10 years old ( I am now 35.). I have been on the Imuran for over 2 years. Best wishes"

When will there be a cure for Crohns disease? I know that they are working on a vaccine in England.? I have had Crohns for 2 years. Currently on Humira, asacol , and imuran. Have been on the Humira for a month but havent seen a remission yet. Actually , i have never seen a remission since ive been diagnosed. I want there to be a cure , or at least something close to it. Frustrating to see all efforts go towards all of these band aid treatments, instead of trying to figure out what causes this stupid disease. I just wish whoever researches all of this stuff would just use a little common sense.

ALT DOC replied: "Hi Cole Here are some remedies to help the healing process. Causes Crohn's disease can be caused by a variety of factors, including poor diet and nutrition, food allergies, imbalanced levels of hydrochloric acid, impaired immunity, infections, lack of exercise, "leaky gut" syndrome, pharmaceutical drugs, and stress. Quick Action Plan for Crohn's Disease 1. Diet is of primary importance. Avoid all sugars, refined flour products, and carbohydrates, milk and dairy products, processed foods that contain preservatives and artificial sweeteners, alcohol, hydrogenated and trans-fatty oils, as well as foods that are common allergens. 2. Emphasize organic, fresh vegetables and non-citrus fruits, organic grains, as well as organic, free-range meats and poultry and wild-caught fish. 3. Drink plenty of pure, filtered water throughout the day. 4. Enema containing butyric acid two to five times a week. (Add one tablespoon of butyric acid to one quart of warm water.) 5. Supplements with vitamin A, beta carotene, vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and zinc, taken with a multivitamin/multimineral formula. Essential fatty acids, especial omega-3 oils, are also recommended. 6. Stress reduction through the use of various mind/body medicine techniques, such as biofeedback, hypnotherapy, meditation and relaxation exercises. 7. If you smoke, stop and if you are currently taking aspirin or other NSAIDs, consider replacing them with safer, more effective natural remedies. 8. Soothing baths two to five nights and alternating hot and cold water packs placed over the stomach and upper abdomen. 9. Juice remedies include aloe juice; wheatgrass juice; cabbage, papaya, and carrot juice; and carrot, beet, and cucumber juice. 10. Juice of half a lemon with warm water, especially in the morning. 11. Allow yourself to receive emotional support to help you embrace some of the common underlying issues identified with Crohn's, such as abandonment, anger, disappointment and rage, which often settle in the gut. Seek out a therapist or other skilled practitioner that can guide you through emotional healing work. Best of health to you Cheers"

Joachin Murietta replied: "I have been diagnosed with Crohn's for 40 years...welcome to the club and believe me I understand your frustration. Crohn's is an autoimmune disease like Lupus or rheumatiod arthritis - it is NOT caused by food allergies, stress, bad diet, lack of exercise or anything else (Sorry Alt Doc....get your facts straight and stop preaching your dietary quackery). Researchers are getting closer to better treatments all the time and hopefully there will be a cure for this baffling disease. Please don't think that there is nothing being done on it and that researchers are not using common sense. Keep faith and stay on the meds. Don't subscribe to all the "natural" or "herbal" cures out there - they flat out don't work, and those that tell that they do are not correct - believe me - I've tried them all."

Crohns Disease with chronically inflamed ulcerated ileum, why no pain? ? I have had crohns inflammation since 1999. There used to be deep pain. The pain stopped in 2004. I have not had a stitch of pain since. I stopped the meds. I suffered a severe attack last month. My intestines are still severely inflamed but no surgery will be preformed as they do not cut out inflammation. This time the ulcers appeared on my mouth, neck and forehead. Can anyone tell me what happened to the pain in my ileum? Two GI Doctors told me they do not know why there is no pain. My mouth hurt from the ulcers. I am back on all drugs now, Prednison, Imuran and Remicade. Today I feel fine. Common Sense: Thanks for the answer. I copied and pasted my two CD questions from here and sent them to. I appreciate your help.

common sense replied: "hi pen, I'm a female crohn's pt. like yourself for 28 yrs. I've never heard of not cutting out inflammation as I've had surgery when my entire large colon was so badly inflamed that it had to be removed in order to save my life as I had fistulas and abscesses. Surgery is only necessary when the pt's quality of life gets to the point of where they can't function anymore. Some folks are lucky if they don't feel pain. It depends how deep the inflammation is and if anything else is festering like an abscess or fistula....then you will really feel it. I am speaking from experience. Check out the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation's site. They have great information on latest meds, women's issues, surgery, coping skills, a live chat & hotline run by healthcare experts, and an open forum where you can post questions to others like yourself. Definitely look into it. I'm glad you feeling better."

Upset over hair loss hair thinning from medication? I have started to notice recently...that my hair is thinner...and it falls out alot...i feel its from the medicine i take for my Crohns Disease Imuran....i am so upset over this...i want beautiful hair just like anyone else....i am taking lots of biotin and have been for months and a complete vitamin....any other suggestions? what about nioxin or anything you can suggest i would appreciate....i have in the last month halted all chemicals on my head dyes anything that harms it...but i was in tears today because this is hard to deal with....:( thank you all for responding...i did call my doctor...he hasn't called me back yet...i hate this medicine and preppy girl you have been reported your account will not exist by the morning you are such an idiot...karma comes around u know ...you might end up bald!

Shawnyâ„¢ replied: "Talk to your doctor and see if he can prescribe you a medication that does not effect your hair. But don't worry your hair loss will not be permanent and they will grow back soon."

Annie A replied: "sweetie, treating it won't really work if you continue to use the chemicals that's causing the destruction. the only way you can really treat it is when u stop using the medication. talk to your doctor about it and see if he cant prescribe something else... also, however, this is a bit expensive, but it works; ...as well as all its other products in a 5 step treatment. trust me =)"

nupeper replied: "I'm so sorry I'm not sure what you can do to stop it, maybe you can talk to your doc and see if there is another medication you can try or maybe have your dose altered, if not, maybe try a weave or extensions... good luck! btw preppy girly... grow up get a life, I'm sure you're either a 45 year old man or incredably hated and ugly, and you are a coward (you don't allow e-mails so people can't tell you how much you suck at life)"

threeicys replied: "I am sorry this is causing you saddness. This website seems the most comprehensive. Get a recommendation from a dermatologist for a support group. Lots of women lose their hair for various reasons. Hope you feel better."

Photographer replied: "Dont go out and buy anything expensive. First: Purchase a mild Shampoo (To Clarify hair, I will explain why) Second: TRIM your hair ends (May 1 1/2 to 2 inches) Third: Here's the magic part: Mix olive oil, almond oil, coconut oil, avocado oil and a "little" honey, (honey u will have to heat so it can blend). Either leave on ALL day or all night (if all nite, DONT use honey) Use a teaspoon of every oil and honey,.... a little more if ur hair is long or a little less if ur hair is short Repeat this 3-4 times a week, your hair will grow like a weed, fortify, reconstruct, moisturize, soften & remove all frizz I promise,..... and it will be super shiny!!!! The clairifying shampoo will help take the oil off your hair when u shower You can also use a conditioner but get a light conditioner that wont wiegh ur hair down, becuz u can over condition, I use herbl essences "clean happy" conditioner. When I do this at nite, I wake up, shampoo & condition, rinse and style as usual. Has worked for years You can find olive oil anywere, but the other oils you will have to buy at a local organics store, wholes foods or BJ's health corner. Source:....."

Crohn's disease??? questions about humira??? I am almost 14 years old and i have crohns disease. i was diagnosed in april of 2007 I started out with all the basics like asacol and imuran and prednisone (BLERG!!!!) but then they stopped working and i was going soooo high levels on prednisone so then i switched to remicade. Remicade worked wonders for like...7 months or so but the last one i had gave me joint pain so bad i couldnt move (i always get joint pain after remicade but this time i couldnt move at all) so i switched to humira. So i've heard its a possibility to get lymphoma from remicade or humira. 2 questions 1) what are the side effects of humira? so far i've had pain obiously from the shot itself and burning for 15 minutes after, joint pain, and some stomach pain 2) is there a higher risk of getting lymphoma from humira vs remicade? or was remicade a higher risk? or is the risk so slim its nothing to worry about? pleeease help me!! thanks so much

common sense replied: "hi hanna, I am a female crohn's pt. for 28 yrs. dxed at age 12.(am 40 yrs. old now) I can totally relate to your concerns and questions. Are you a candidate for Entocort by chance? It's a steroid but not as potent as prednisone PLUS there are no side effects at all--no moon face, no mood swings, it doesn't get into the blood stream at all, it goes right to the inflammation and wears off after many hrs., there are no eye problems, etc. I was on Humira for 9 months. The side effects I had were: Bruising at the injection site on my thigh so I take a bag of ice cubes (not the small thing they give you to numb the area) and numb the area in and around where I am going to shoot myself. Then I wipe w/an alcohol wipe and wait for a few minutes b/c that can cause burning in itself. It takes several months before you will notice a difference in your symptoms. Be sure to tell the drug company's RN when they call to follow up with you. They did with me. I was given a hotline number to call w/any problems or questions...even if it was a side effect I called. As w/any biological treatments there is always a risk. That is why you have to follow up w/your GI, get the necessary blood work done, call the drug company if you have questions (I did alot b/c I was nervous at first) You should've been trained by an RN the drug company sent to your home on how to give yourself the shot along with an information packet. Anyway, after the shot, put the ice pack on the area again to numb it. As for the joint pain, see if you can go in for physical therapy or take a muscle relaxer when it gets really bad. I have back pain, arthritis in my hands, knees, legs, arms. I took PT for all of these areas over a period of time to help myself if no meds were available. If you go to the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation's website, they have information ranging from the newer meds, diet, surgery, support groups for teens, as well as a hotline and live chat run by healthcare experts you can call during the week. There is also an open forum where you can post questions to others like yourself. Hanna, I know what it's like to be young, dxed w/a serious illness and then having to deal with all of the meds, tests, surgeries, etc. Definitely check out the ccfa site and locate a local ccfa chapter near you to meet other kids your own age. Also, educate yourself and your teachers so they don't give you a hard time when you have to leave class to use the bathroom. CCFA has brochures you can give to them so they know how serious CD is. feel free to email me if you have questions. I wish you all the best."

Kathy D replied: "Hi Hannah, My son, age 13, was diagnosed last spring with Crohn's disease. He has been taking Humira 40 mgs. every two weeks since 7/30/07. He takes a multi-vitamin, calcium, and iron. He uses a stool softener every night. That's it. He can eat everything and anything he wants. The only joint pain he has experienced is from growing so quickly after not growing for a year. He has the same pain from the shot but it has gotten better over time. With respect to lymphoma, it is our understanding from the research that it only occurred when 6 MP was given with humira. Our son is thrilled with the results. K"

My aunt has crohn's disease. When would a complete removal of the rectum and most of the colon be the answer? My aunt has had severe crohns for about 5 years now. She has done all she could to avoid having surgery. Up until recently all the doctors had said she should get a colostomy bag and allow her rectal area to heal. She has several fistulas and a lot of scar tissue near her rectum. It has gotten so bad now that the doctors say, it would be best to remove her rectum and mostly all of her large intestine. She has been on imuran and remicade. They said they can not remove the scar tissue from her anal area, because it would leave her incontinent. Does diseased tissue have any chance at all to heal? I dont understand why they dont even try to do a reversible surgery? Why does such a drastic surgery have to be done? From what I have read, it sounds like, she will be in less pain though. No woman wants to have something like this done. It is just awful. They said they can't remove the scar tissue from her anal area because it would leave her incontinent. I think she should get a second opinion from another expert also.

bic replied: "this is between your aunt and her doctor. apparently your aunt has refused the minor surgeries that could have helped her along the way. sometimes the reversal surgery isn't an option after having the bag. it goes along with this disease."

bmac replied: "She should get a second opinion. Another option MIGHT be to do a retread of the rectum/colon. They would clean it out, remove all the fistulas, polyps and scar tissue and hook her up to a colostomy bag to let it heal. Hopefully it would heal enough for them to hook her back up normally with an anastomosis. More info:"

Common Sense replied: "Yes, this is awful... Sounds like that the very least, she should get a second opinion from another expert in the field but I suspect that her options are limited..."

mrsunshine56987 replied: "Sorry to hear about ur aunt i also have chron's disease but i have it under control 'at the moment' i has (4) ops (small) to remove fiisures and i had a lot of doctor and nurse care for dressings etc. i would think this type of op ur aunt is going having would be a last solution. try everything else 1st. there are plenty of books and info on the net regarding this disease. i know what she is going through and my thoughts and prayers are with her. take care"

JustMe replied: "Here are some natural supplements that have helped others with this condition. Optiflora: to repopulate the bowel lining with "friendly bacteria" Alfalfa Complex: anti-inflammatory; high mineral content promotes healing; promotes cleansing of bowel irritants Zinc: promotes healing B-Complex: anti-stress; increases absorption Vita-E: aids healing and reduces scar tissue GLA Complex: essential for tissue healing Help doesn't come overnight with a program such as this. It requires time and consistency. Hope this is useful and feel free to contact me with questions or the brand I recommend."

miamiweiss replied: "Sorry to hear about your aunt. I have had Crohn’s for about 25 years and it can be rough BUT they are making great strides in research so before she has such radical surgery she should get a second opinion in either New York or Los Angeles (or any MAJOR city) since these doctors see more patients and thus have more experiences with the more difficult cases. I had luck with Remicade but then grew allergic and now Humira is AMAZING – but I did not have so much scar tissue or fistulas – which seems to be the case with your Aunt. I write a detailed Patient Blog about my experiences at and I think the Posts on Humira and Remicade might help you. In any event, please feel free to email me and I can share with you whatever insights possible."

Can you paint toenail polish over a toenail that has a fungus? I know it sounds gross..ever since i damaged the nail...by bruising it twice and cutting it too short in the corners and developed ingrown toenail that got infected the nail bed grew back in the corners yellow...thick on one side and is weak..i am now finally using the stuff that you paint over it and i am using one of those powder sprays..but hey its summer so i painted the toenails cause that one toenail looks so gross..is that okay to do? When will this toenail ever get better...is scraping it underneath just constantly disturbing it from getting better? I think having low immunity prior...i was taking Imuran...cause i have Crohns Disease someone made this worse...suggestions...remedys? thanks i hate this stupid toenail of mine! its really ugly and i am self conscious...because my mom even noticed it and told me it was infected..the doctor would not give me Lamisil she said to buy this over the counter stuff you paint on it...anyone her ever take this stuff? how much does it hurt to have it removed?

Blackjack14 replied: "You really shouldnt paint over it, the toxins in the polish could seep into the wound and infect you. You should really go to the doctors and have it removed and let it heal. Good luck."

cannotundo replied: "there is a polish that is especially for that, but you obviously have a doctor, ask him/her the paint on stuff is just like a nail polish, 'how much it hurts to remove', I don't understand"

© ¡ Tito ! replied: "It would be best to simply remove the toe in question."

.:.Betsy.:. replied: "It is okay, as long as you don't get the polish on your skin where the infected toenail is...like in the middle. My sister has fungus in 8 of her toes, and she always has them painted! It's a nice way to cover up the fungus"

Cathy replied: "listen you got feet issues, you're going to need your feet for the rest of your life. get it handled! go see a doctor that will actually do something about it before you damage your toe for life. don't just get a cover up."

lvlksuperior replied: "You can paint the nail without doing any harm. Nail fungus is deep under the nail in the soft tissue thus the paint on types of cures do not work so save your money as they are expensive. The best cure for it is a prescription medication that your doctor can give you, but if you do not have insurance it is very pricey ($150.00 at my pharmacy). Lamicil is a good over the counter product that will keep it somewhat in check but will not completely cure it. Scraping will not get rid of it but it will stop the nail from getting disfigured from the buildup underneath, nail fungus also is a cause of ingrown nails as the nails curl from the fungus. Nail fungus is easily spread to other nails both hands and feet, after scraping the infected toe make sure that you clean your tool used with alcohol and also your hands."

Carla J replied: "Yes you can paint your toenails even if you have fungus. Don't try to scrape the fungus cause you can actually spread the fungus with whatever you are scraping it with. Your best bet is to go to the doctor for treatment."

Rossie replied: "I think there's a useful source you can visit: Hope this helps ;-)"

Help with Crohn's Disease!? I have had Crohns for 2 1/2 years now, I am taking Imuran (Azathioprine) and Prednisolone. Im currently on 20mg a day, and I'm worried that when I taper the dose down further, i'm just going to flare up like usual. Only this time, my gastroenterologist wants me to have a small bowel resection-surgery to remove part of my bowel. I've never had this and its quite scary! I have heard good things about Infliximab (Remicade) but with the current Australian restrictions, I doubt I would be approved for it. Also can't afford it. Can anyone help with ideas or anything, ways to get Remicade would be good! I'm desperate!!!

MishMash replied: "Have you seen a dietitian. In person not on the internet. I'm surprised if your Gastro doc didn't refer you. Report him or delete him if he didn't."

Kristie replied: "Wow, try and avoid surgery for as long as you can TRUST ME...I'm on 10mg/kg of Remicade every 6 weeks. There is a program now I'm not sure if it is for Australia but it help with the cost of the infusions called Remi Smart which is with a company called Access One. It is a rebate program. Their number is 1-888-222-3771. Monday- Friday 8 AM-8:30PM our time. I'd call them and see if they offer anything for where you're at. Yes, most people flare coming off Prednisone, I did. It is because we became depended on Prednisone and once it is gone it goes in attack craze. If you have anymore questions feel free to email me...I will call for you Monday and find out what you can do and post it here for you. Wish you luck."
