Is lilly-fluoxetine safe to use during pregnancy? I have been recently prescribed lilly-fluoxetine for my depression and anxiety attacks, how would the dose or medication affect my baby? I am currently 5 months pregnant. The dr that prescribed the medication says that i will not harm the baby, how trusting can i be of that comment?

livinonaprayer replied: "well this website says not to take it because the effects it has on newborn babies whos moms take it dosnt sound good. i would get a second oppinion."

qotfu72 replied: "I have been on fluoxetine for a few years and trying to conceive for 3 years, my GP said it was fine to take while pregnant and breatsfeeding so i had no intention of going off it. Then when I finally got pregnant my GP called me in and said there is now some evidence (one trial) that taking fluoxetine past week 20 of pregnancy MIGHT be linked to an increase in heart conditions for babies. However when I discussed this with my obstectrician she discounted it and said that was the results of one trial and there were hundreds which showed it was safe. Also she said you had to weigh up the effect a depressed and/or anxious mother has on a baby. I'm sorry but I dont have a straight forward answer for you. Just letting you know I was/am in the same boat. Currently I am 22 weeks pregnant and have weaned myself off the drug. I am fine now but completely aware this may change and am ready to reconsider my medication when/if that time comes."

Did you take Fluoxetine throughout your entire pregnancy? I'm 37 weeks pregnant and am quite afraid of the effects of the medication on the baby. I have called mother risk a number of times. They specialize in studying medications like this and the effects on the baby and they say it is the most prescribed and has less severe effects on the baby than depression does. So I have my information. I have had any medical professional in my life advise me to stay on as well. I'm just curious about real experiences people have had and how their babies are.

H.E.R.O's Mommy replied: "Honestly, I always think it is better to be medication free when you are pregnant. BUT if it is absolutely neccesary then please take your meds! I was on fluoxetine (Prozac) when I got pregnant, I thought of the effects it could possibly have on my child and decided I didn't like them. I was on it for OCD, I decided that I could live with the OCD for 40 weeks but I couldn't live with a baby who had affects from the meds which i could have prevented. If you can live with the anxiety or depression you have been percribed Prozac for then I would go off of them. But always follow medical advice."

mystic_eye_cda replied: "I don't have any personal advice for you, but motherisk is pretty good. But if you are planning to breastfeed you may want to wean yourself off fluoxetine towards the end of your pregnancy so you can switch to something else once the baby is born. Fluoxetine from pregnancy with the amount in breastmilk can cause problems. And its not the safest choice for a nursing mom. Usually moms switch to zoloft once the baby is born. If you do stay on fluoxetine make sure you have a doctor that is very knowledgable about breastfeeding to help monitor your baby. Good Luck!"

Pregnancy and fluoxetine/prozac...? Hi, me and my partner have decided to try for our second baby but I am on fluoxetine, does anyone have any experience in this or does anyone know of any bad effects on pregnancy? Thanks in advance.

Rachel replied: "i was coming off it when i got pregnant and came off it all together by the time i found out at 6weeks. see ur doctor its not good for the baby and in my experience it was not doing me much good, i just thought it was"

bug replied: "There is no medical evidence to suggest that fluoxetine is harmful to a unborn baby during pregnancy, it does not have any adverse outcome to the baby when born, fluoxetine does not affect breastmilk. I took it before I was pregnannt both times, during my pregnancies and after, my kids are fine. Student Midwife"

Mrs Stones 2 B Baby due 26/12/09 replied: "hiya hun, i was told to come off mine a few months before trying and that i cud start taking it again at 14 weeks if i needed it, everyone is diff so speak to your dr before hand they may want to just lower your dose, they go on a baby takes 12 weeks to form so you shud avoid meds in that time, after that dna is set so you can take stuff in moderation thing, thats what i was told off my dr anyways"

cjsmummy replied: "i was given prozac in pregnancy - its considered the safest to give.however, you really should see a doctor to discuss with them the pros and cons - maybe your dose could be lowered.whatever you do, dont stop taking it - this is dangerous."

Fluoxetine(Prozac) during pregnancy? I have always suffered severe depression, I became pregnant unexpectedly and was on 20mg Fluoxetine, I then weaned myself off under doctors supervision as I was not sure of the risks of taking this medication during pregnancy. However when I reached the second trimester I went into severe depression again and couldn't cope, was always crying and arguing with my Fiance, so I went to see a specialist consultant in pregnancy and she perscribed me Fluoxetine 20mg again, she assured me that the risks are next to none and that if I didn't treat the depression it would be worse for the baby. Since I've been taking the meds I am SO much better and feeling a lot more myself, no longer argue at all with my partner and don't get upset over nothing. I am now 23 weeks pregnant and feel the baby all the time, have had all my scans/blood tests and all is well. I still worry that when the baby is born it may get withdrawn? I have been reassured by my Midwife who says she has a lot of patients on the drug and by 3 consultants. I know I am better on this drug but I still get scared even though I have read up so much about it. My question is has anyone else been on this drug during pregnancy and how did you and the baby get on when you gave birth? I am planning to breastfeed and have also been told this is low risk. Thanks.

conlivinfusion replied: "The most commonly held belief is that this type of drug is safe during pregnancy. A recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine indicates that women who take this type of medication have a six-fold increase in the possibility of their baby having a life-threatening condition called pulmonary hypertension. This condition is so rare that even with a six-fold increase this only accounts for about 1% of babies born to mothers who take Prozac and drugs like it. The baby is even less likely to suffer from withdrawal. There is also concern that stopping the medication could lead to serious postpartum depression problems for the mother. I personally stopped taking all medications except prenatals when I was pregnant and nursing, but you should talk to your doctor to find out what is right for you and your baby. The risk to the baby is quite small, so the main thing is, do the benefits outweigh the risks?"

fluoxetine in pregnancy? ive just been prescribed this anti depressant by my GP after years of trying to ignore that i have depression. Does anyone else take this and if so what are the side effects and did it make you feel any better. im 14 weeks pregnant

mwaks replied: "NO!"

Pinkflower replied: "I do hope these websites might be able to help you. "

Sweet Sarah replied: "This drug can make you feel worse before you get better(even suicidal) It can cause dizziness, feeling sleepy and give you mood swings. i'm sure you should'nt be taking them if your pregnant!!! Check with G.P"

FiB81 replied: "Any drug in pregnancy, ideally should be omitted, however, your GP has to balance out the pro's and con's of any prescribed drug given to a pregnant woman. He/she wouldn't have prescribed it if they didn't think it necessary. Apart form you already feeling depressed, your GP would have been thinking about all the other hormonal changes affecting you too. There's post natal depression of course for him/her to think about and also ante natal depression, which I myself suffered from. Trust that your GP has made the correct decision for you. Do some reading up on the net about the drug and post your question also under different topics. Best wishes."

Mishell replied: "First of all congrats for facing your depression. I have taken anti d's on & off over the years & i have been told by many doctors & a psychiatrist that Fluoxitine is not safe during pregnancy, although it is safe during breastfeeding. There are some anti d's that are considered safe during pregnancy & these are usually the older style ones - as they have been around for many years & so many babies have been born & grown old normally from mothers who have taken the anti-d's. Fluoxitine is the anti d that i have taken for many years & have had to go off during 2 of my pregnancies. I have done my research on this drug so please get a second opinion. It's important though that you don't stop taking it abruptly so keep taking your medication & get a second opinion asap. Best of luck to you."

charly replied: "my husband is taking fluxetine and it has not made him feel better, he has all the side effects possible, a friend of mine has taken this and she has noticed the world of diffrence. pregnancy is a time when you dont want to be suffering from depression and anti deppresant drugs are safe during pregnancy so just give it a go and see how it suits you. good luck xXx"

Sharon S replied: "I was on anti depressants when I found out I was pregnant and I was told that although they don't harm the growth or development of the baby the baby will become addicted to the drug by the third trimester and will have withdrawal symptoms when he/she was born. I had only been on the tablets a few months so I decided to come off them and since I have been doing better than I have in years, being pregnant gives you something to work towards. I hope this helps."

bug replied: "Hi, i take prozac and did so through both my pregnancies, it will not have any effect on the baby. As for you well, it will take a couple of weeks to get going in your system, but once it does you will be able to think more clearly and seperate problems more easily, i found with my depression i just couldn't seperate one problem from another and they were all jumbled on top of one another!! You may feel some physical effects at first but they soon go away, i've been taking prozac for nearly 13 years now and i have tried to come off of them several times unsuccessfully, i do have to emphazise that these tablets will cause your baby no harm whatsoever. you're going to be fine, things will start to look brighter for you good luck xxx"

thedaddy replied: "my wife is now 40wks plus 1 with our 3rd baby and she has been on and off anti depressants throughtout her pregnancy including fluoxetine. Fluoxetine did not help my wifes severe clinical depression or anxiety but that doesnt mean it wont work for you. Good luck"

nicolefrenzy replied: "yes but the minute i found out i was pregnant i stopped taking it (should do this on doctors advice by reducing dosage) read the label you baby could need monitored after the birth to keep an eye for with drawls i do not want that for my baby do you?"

jop291106 replied: "i assume your GP knew you are pregnant before he prescribed? it's not ideal to take whilst pregnant, better avoided...BUT A depressed mummy is much worse for the baby in the long run, so it's worth the TINY extra risk. Your GP probably considered it safe, and it's better for you to be well, so, don't worry and enjoy your pregnancy"

Fluoxetine, tramadol & co-dydramol in pregnancy - advice please? I am 3 days late for my period and have just taken a pregnancy test (although it was 6 months out of date) and it has shown a positive result. I take 1 fluoxetine tablet a day, 8 co-dydramol tablets a day and the other day I took 8 tramadol tablets (I have had a bad back for years). Will any of these tablets have done any damage in the very early stages of pregnancy? I can cope without the tramadol & fluoxetine whilst pregnant but need the co-dydramol for my back pain. Is it ok to take this throughout pregnancy? Will any of the other two have caused any damage? I am making a doctor's app't but need to know if I can still take co-dydramol in the meantime as I can't cope without them. Thanks for your help xx

*1st Time Mummy 2 be* replied: "Go to the shop and buy another pregnancy test just to make sure. Your not really meant to take anything in pregnancy so i would go to the GP and find out what he / she thinks"

reenie162000 replied: "you definitely can't have co dydramol the only pain killer you can have in pregnancy is paracetamol. They can cause miscarriages the odd one may be fine but definitely not 8 a day Get an appointment with your doc asap"

aussiebudz replied: "don trust advice on the internet when something as serious as your BABY is at risk... ask your doctor!!"

joanne.harding0704@btinternet.co replied: "You should either phone nhs direct and they should be able to advise you or even ask a pharmacist, they might know. I haven't got a clue, but I do know that the very early stages are crucial in developement, so you really need to get a proffesional medical opinion. You don't actually know if all the people on here are genuine, or if they know what they're talking about. Hope everything go's well, good luck!"

General Devious replied: "wife was prescribed this one(co-dydramol) as pulled a muscle during pregnancy, it's aspirin that you can't have but take your docs advice you should be ok though........"

hot_ef replied: "STOP TAKING THEM IMMEDIATELY. all of the drugs you listed can damage your unborn baby. google it and you will see what i mean. just type in "fluexotine hydochloride pregnancy" and the same for the others, and you will see what i mean. all of these types of drugs can harm your baby, and it can also harm you."

pinkpep78 replied: "I'd go and buy a new pregnancy test now before you do anything! i have alot of pain from SPD and all i can take is paracetamol although they dont work!!"

deigratiaamen replied: "no no no no no--don't take anything! See a doctor and hopefully you will be able to find one that can advise you according to what to do about your pain. He may be able to prescribe something less dangerous for baby. A baby could possibly be hurt, but there is no way to tell for several months. maybe not even until after birth, or later on down the road. God chooses what will happen in situations such as this. i understand chronic pain so please know that i understand about yours. i have been living with intense pain for 8 years now, and will for the rest of my life. you have to chose the route that will be best for the baby, but remember, a baby can't thrive in a womb that is under stress too much either. So look at all your options and work from there. God bless and good luck"

soggy527 replied: "before i got pregnant i was on fluoxetine, beta blockers and pain killers. as soon as i found out i was pregnant i stopped them and went and talked abt it wi the doctor.. he advised me to stop but everyone is different i have coped wi out taking them. the body is strange wen u are are pregnant as it's taking working twice as hard to care for the baby, so u may not need them. only concern u may have is the back pain as u do get this throughout pregnacy.. and only pain killer's u can take is paracentomal.. talk with ur doctor hope all goes well"

lorraine m replied: "hi hun congrats to you ,go to your doctor xx"

I have been prescribed prozac durin my pregnancy as a replacement fr xanax and it dont work for me.? The prozac (fluoxetine) makes me feel terrible and doesnt help my anxiety at all. The side effects are alot worse is there another option? And is the xanax any more dangerous than the prozac during pregnancy? The prozac is deffinately not the answer for me, I am not depressed, I have severe anxiety disorder!

Nathan replied: "Not really. Unfortunately xanax is really bad for the child. You may have to suck it up for the next 9 months."

Pangolin replied: "You need to be discussing this with your obstetrician. Xanax is pregnancy category D, which means there is clear evidence of harmful effects to the fetus. Please do not take it."

Fluoxentine and pregnancy- anyone else know if there is a risk? I am on Fluoxetine. I have discussed with my doctor that I want to start trying to conceive and asked if I needed to come off this first. However he has advised me that there is no concern and that it is fine for me to continue on it during the pregnancy. Has anyone been in a similar situation? Also would it affect breastfeeding?

*Mommy of 2 and TTC#3* replied: "Talking to your doctor is the best advice that can be given. Also asking a pharmacist would help also since they are the ones who are well educated with medications."

Tina replied: "Fluoxentine is considered a category B medication with A being the safest. The categories used are A, B, C, D and X. B means animal-reproduction studies have not demonstrated a fetal risk but there are no controlled studies in pregnant women. Sometimes you need to weigh the benefits of the meds as compared to any risk factors . . . a great website for you to check out is safefetus.com: According to the site, it is in the breastmilk and that could be more of an issue than being on it while pregnant or trying to conceive. I would bring all of this info to your next doctor appointment! Good luck!"

Blossom S replied: "I talked to my OB-GYN about this. Since it's a class B, you have to weigh the benefits vs. the possible harm. I will probably stay on it if I'm lucky enough to get pregnant; I tried to wean off when we first started TTC, and it was pretty awful. I honestly don't know if I could get through 9 months without."

Could coming off fluoxetine (prozac) cause or be a factor in a late period? I've been on fluoxetine (20mg) for depression, for a little over a year, and my periods - though naturally irregular - were not affected. A couple of months ago I came off it, and it would have only recently been completely out of my system (I believe). I have also recently had exams, and had a few weeks of being very worried. I'm not particularly healthy in what I eat or drink, but there have been no health changes (other than coming off the meds). I'm perhaps a few weeks late at the most (I'm irregular, so I cannot give an exact guess), and pregnancy isn't an issue. Is it possible that coming off fluoxetine has had an effect on my periods - if only partial? Many thanks.

Gard23 replied: "All sorts of menstrual changes from what an individual considers her 'norm' have been noticed upon antidepressant withdrawal. So it is a possibility, although there are other explanations, and of course stress is another (your exams)."
