How do you get through Cymbalta withdrawal? Has anyone dealt with Cymbalta (antidepressant) withdrawal? I am going through heck right due withdrawal symptoms of Cymbalta. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make the withdrawal side effects easier? i cannot even function because of the way i am feeling. Any ideas?

dean w replied: "I went through hell when i was on cymbalta 30mg, i only perservered for 3 weeks. I was also taking topamax at 50mg for 4 weeks. It's been 3 months and i am notthe same person. I now have a tremor which hasnt eased and i am always restless and agitated, as well as only sleeping 5 hours a nite, i also get muscle twitching all over. I still feel suicidal and have never had feelings like this before prior to taking these meds. I had taken ssri's for many years without any adverse effects. For agitation i use "relaxation tea" which has skullcap, camomile and valerian to calm the nerves. I also use restavit an antihistamine which also helps with sleep, but remember some ppl react adversly to antihistimines. Effexor kept me awake as well, but nothing compared to cymbalta"

What are the side effects of Cymbalta? I take 60 mg's daily and forgot my pill yesterday. I remembered when Itook my pill this afternoon. I think I'm having withdrawals, I am disoriented and a little nauseas, is this normal?

Crazy Taurus replied: "I take the same thing! Ummm i didnt get naseous but i did feel wooozie and very emotional. Crying left and right! So i think its normal."

ambr123 replied: "Yes, you can have withdrawal symptoms if you stop taking Cymbalta-usually feel dizzy/nauseous and tired."

Just started taking Cymbalta, experiencing side effects. ? I am on day 4 of taking Cymbalta for mild depression. I am not on any other medication but have been experiencing many side effects such as nausea, insomnia, inability to urinate (feels like I can never fully empty my bladder), diarrhea, and the worst is the blurred vision I've been experiencing. I take my pills before I go to bed as they cause me to become very sleepy however they also keep me awake. When I get up in the middle of the night I feel drunk and unstable, almost like I might tip over. (I take 60mg/day) I have several questions: 1) How long can I anticipate experiencing these side effects? 2) Are these side effects normal after only 4 doses? 3) Is the withdrawal as bad as they say it is? 4) Is there another drug you'd recommend, why?

meggus31 replied: "To answer your questions......1) you will have these effects for a couple of weeks or so. 2) yes these effects are normal. the medicine is hitting the chemical pathways in your brain and of course your brain controls your body so many of your systems are being effected. 3) withdrawal? you are not planning on quitting cold turkey are you? If so, then yes, the withdrawal will be severe. 4) i highly recommend celexa. being on cymbalta for 1 year led me to a suicide attempt. Good luck!"

Jacinto B replied: "Look most of the people that have antidepression medication have alot of side effects. My solution for this is to look an alternative like diet, hormonal inbalances, and other issues that can cause depression."

Cavin G replied: "Okay. First off Cymbalta is the WORST and most AWFUL antidepressant EVERY INVENTED. I was on it for depression/anxiety. And because of Cymbalta (and it was DEFINITELY the poison.. I mean medicine.), I have much more severe anxiety disorder, and panic attacks. It created two of the worst experiences of my life (a doctor described it as a cardiovascular-threatening extremely severe panic attack, both of them. So I now have scar tissue on my heart. And I'm lucky I didn't develop a hole, because the scar tissue was from my heart starting to slowly develop a hole in it). Yes, that's how bad the panic attacks were. Life THREATENING. So don't chance it. Please, for Buddha, Allah, God, Zeus, Aphrodite, the gods of the sun, the moon, and the stars, DON'T TAKE CYMBALTA. It has withdrawal effects so bite a tiny peice off (tiny) every day and throw it out and take it. bit the same amount off and toss it every day until you are off the shit. Ugh. Psychiatrist who prescribe Cymbalta are mother f-u.c.king morons."

Hopefully Helpful replied: "It seems like the Cymbalta is giving you a lot of side effects. I am also taking Cymbalta. I think the only side effect I had was slight nausea for a about a week. Call your doctor to let him/her know what is going on. Maybe you have a virus that might be causing your diarrhea. I take my Cymbalta with my breakfast. I think it is supposed to help us feel more awake. Please don't wait for your next appointment to speak to your doctor. I hope you will get this worked out so you can start to feel better. Please take care of yourself."

How do you think i'll react, switch from cymbalta to effexor tabs, anyone on that before? Tomrrow or thursday, i'll be switching from cymbalta 60mg to effexor. with cymbalta i have a twitch, and gained around 17 pounds. switching to effexor what do you think will happen? side effects? withdrawal? thanks

Hannah's Mum replied: "Effexor is VERY bad! I was on it and it made me become suicidal! It can also make manic episodes really bad! Id tell them to go pound salt if there going to change it on you the side effects are horrible!"

I am just starting on cymbalta and would like to know about possible weight gain while on it.? I am reading all these things about cymbalta causing drastic weight gain and having terrible withdrawal side effects. I am currently on 40 mg/day (I just started) and I'm not sure if I want to continue. I have been on Wellbutrin SR 300 mg/day and I loved it and I'm wondering if I should ask to go back on that. Does anyone have any advice or experiences to share with me?

Debra D replied: "I can't imagine why you were taken off Wellbutrin SR if it was working for you. Cymbalta's a new SSRI and the gimmick with this antidepressant is it's claim that it helps with the physical symtoms of depression. Unless you're extremely depressed, you might want to get off that stuff for awhile. They all cause side effects."

apes replied: "all antidepressants are harm full and have potentially very damaging and permanent side effects. check the web sites and crazymeds.com."

elizabeth k replied: "hello im currently taking cymbalta and no for me there is no weight gain im losing its a new med and i only takr 3o mg of it at bedtime or u can take it in the morning but i take it at nite because it makes me a little tired during the day take care and good luck"

What should I expect when changing medication for depression? Wellbutrin to Cymbalta? I've been on 300mg of Wellbutrin for the past 2 weeks and it hasn't helped worth crap, so my meds are being changed. I'm going back down to 150mg Wellbutrin and adding 60mg Cymbalta, i'm taking it in the morning. What side effects or withdrawal symptoms might come up? Any info will help

EZT replied: "all those anti-depressants don't work do some research, they will do more harm"

Honestly, now replied: "I don't think you were on the Wellbutrin long enough for it to have much effect, but when I went off it after a year and a half I hit a deep depression that lasted a couple months. I know nothing about Cymbalta, though. Beer works better than any of those expensive drugs."

Does cymbalta work to treat depression? Are the withdrawal symptoms really terrible? I have been prescribed cymbalta for major depression. I'm supposed to take 30 mg for a week and then 60 mg after that. I've taken it for three nights in a row. So far, the only side effect I've noticed is grogginess. However, I have read HORROR stories online of people with side effects and withdrawal symptoms when they stop taking it. Is this a minority of people? I'm interested in hearing others' experiences with Cymbalta to see if I should continue taking it. I know you have to taper off gradually, and of course I will see my doctor before I ever decide to do anything. I just want to hear other people's personal experiences with this drug.

no way ho-say replied: "Honestly, everyone is different therefore what might affect someone negatively doesn't mean it'll do the same for you. It can be really easy to get freaked out by hearing other peoples experiences so it's best to talk with your doctor about your concerns. I take Welbutrin for depression and I've heard that some people have had bad reactions to it meanwhile I'm perfectly fine with it."

drumcatblue replied: "Several years ago, I was prescribed Cymbalta for the depression part of my bi polar. They had increased the dosage of it slowly but about 10 days of taking it, I became manic. DON'T STOP TAKING THE MEDICINE ABRUPTLY, it can do some weird things if you quit taking it all of a sudden, be sure and talk to a DR."

Kathryn R replied: "I've been on cymbalta for over two years and the only side effect that I have is sleepiness and that went away as my body got used to the medication. As I'm still on it I can't say about withdrawing but you should only do that under a doctors care where they gradually lower the dose. Most difficult withdrawals come when the person them selfs stop the medication with out a doctors help or knowledge. A doctor will rarely take you off of any thing cold turkey unless you're in a hospital where you can be monitored and taken care of if things get really bad."

I feel like I am going to lose my mind! Cymbalta Withdrawal I have copied and pasted this to seek our more answers, I am 3 days into the 20mg dose and I am feeling so bad, I am completely disoriented, and my anxiety level is through the roof! I sleep a lot to try to get through it. I am afraid of losing my mind, I can't concentrate on anything for any length of time. I am seeking out therapy on Monday to get help through this but I am so afraid right now I had to get it out. Below is my original post and I would still appreciate any support and feedback. I have been on this med for 2 yrs, I am going off of it with the help of my doc, but the withdrawals are awful, brain zaps, mood swings, super dizzy. Please if anyone has been through this I would love to hear about your experience just to get through this!! I have read up on this a lot, and all of these symptoms seem to fall in line, just scared I guess. I would never recommend this drug to anyone, being on it made me gain 15 lbs, I was totally unmotivated to do everyday things, stopped exercising, super panicky, high anxiety all the time, no quaiity of life on this med. Just a little additional info, I was on prozac for many many years before the Cymbalta, I felt as though the Prozac was not working anymore so I talked to my doc and she put me on Cym. However, I was in the middle of some family problems when I switched and was having more depression at that point (not bi-polar) so she put me on Cym. It worked for a while and within the last year everything just crept up on me, I was at a loss for why I was so dizzy and paranoid, could hardly get out of the house etc... I started reading up on Cym. and I truly believe it caused this change in me. It actually made me more down from the side effects, like I said quality of life was bad. I was on 60 mgs, a month on 30mgs, and now every other day 30mgs, what a ride.. I am going to ask my doc to put me on 20mgs for 2 wks after this and just taper down again.. NO MORE anti-depressents for me, I need to see what life is like without, it has been forever since I have known the "real" me...a happy me? Thanks !

PAC replied: "Try this...its from a google search, there were many sites. "

I am thinking of switching from cymbalta to wellbutrin. But I dont have any more cymbalta to ween myself off? I know this doesnt sound good...but the only reason i want to switch from cymbalta to wellbuitrin is because my doctor wont okay my script after i moved to another state...(even though i have been on antidepressants for 5 years, and she obviously knows i need it.) but I cant get a new doctor to okay it because I cant afford to see a doctor, i'm 21 w/o insurance. (oh the american dream) and I just want to start taking the wellbutrin because i think it can prevent the withdrawal side effects from not having my cymbalta. but i do know that you should ween off one med then slowly start another, but what is one to do that needs her antidepressants to avoid the withdrawal side effects like those 'zaps'? All I cant think of is to start the wellbutrin that i have. please help me. thanks.

gggsbaby replied: "See if you can find a free clinic in your area or if all else fails, go to an ER. These medications need to be monitored by a doctor and yes, you do need to ween off one drug before going on another. You could potentially have serious withdrawal symptoms. Trust me, you don't want to go through that."

CrG replied: "Ideally, what you should do is not available therefore take the Wellbutrin and don't worry about it. I have taken both of these meds. I quit the Cymbalta because it raised my eye pressure. The Welbutrin is working fine."

yahoo2006 replied: "Gosh i am taking cymbalta....i dont like it, told psychiatrist i wasnt taking it anymore...blah blah....but i have 5 wks of samples..in my room and they are just there...i havent been taking them.....you should ask your doc for samples....i know they are $120 a month supply...expensive...but if u go to there is a section where u go to eli lily section and u can print out a form for a free voucher for cymbalta..the makers will send ur doctor the medicine after u fax the paperwork..its only 1 paper...cause i was gonna do that..but im not taking cymbalta anymore...im tryin to do better on my own...but i know i do need meds..but its a struggle...been on and off of pills(zoloft, lexapro, citalpram(celexa), and now cymbalta for 10 yrs...none i tookfor more than 3 months i would say...nothing works. well for me...still looking for the right meds. goodluck though."

Dizziness while on Cymbalta? I have been on it since July. I am not withdrawing right now, so this is not a withdrawal side effect. I am experiencing it while being ON the med for 4-5 months. Anyone else?

Dr who replied: "Cymbalta will cause you to be that way,it can make you like being drunk."

Northwest Girl replied: "Even though you've been on it for 4-5 months you can still experience new side effects, especially w/Cymbalta which is an anti-depressant. There is a 'build up' effect with this type of medicine. Dizziness is a common side effect. If it's problematic, i.e. effects your walking, standing, etc... contact your prescribing doctor immediately. DO NOT stop taking the medicine though, as this could make it worse. For now, try to take your time when you are sitting up and standing up. Don't stand up right away, try to do it slowly. Perhaps if you're lying down, slowly sit up, give yourself a minute or two and then slowly stand up. Take things slowly and contact your doctor. Good luck."
