Changing from Cymbalta (antidepressant) to a different one? Does anyone know If I'll be able to change to a different antidepressant straight away? I'm going back to the doctor because I think the Cymbalta is making me feel worse. I've only been on them a couple of weeks , but am so tired and they seem to make me feel short of breath, not gasping-it's hard to explain. has anyone else felt like this and changed to something else?

Amy S replied: "You will have to be tapered off of the Cymbalta but because you have not been on it for a long time they may be able to take you off quicker, I have been taking paxil now for about ten years and it works great for me. I am sure that there is something else out there for you, alot of people have to switch off of their first antidepressant and on to another one, I bet the next one will work better for you. Hope this helps you, and good luck in finding the right one for you."

Rockford replied: "I also stopped Cymbalta recently because I did not like the hot flashes. I didn't wait, I switched to wellbutrin straight away and feel fine. I had wellbutrin at home and didn't ask the doctor. I would ask just to make sure. Some you can overlap and some you can't."

lexi replied: "Are you taking it for depression or anxiety? I started Cymbal ta in July after eight years with panic disorder and in three weeks I had my life back (one week 30 Mg's, two weeks 60 Mg's in the morning) and it gave me my life back after being an agoraphobic! I have to say I'm also taking klonopin twice a day. I haven't felt this way in years! I know they say to take it at night but I read on tons of forums it is better to take it in the morning. You've been on it for two weeks, maybe give it one more week and tell your doc about the uncomfortable feelings, maybe he can prescribe something temporary while your body adjusts to the medication. I do hear that those with depression don't fair well on Cymbalta so if you are taking it for that it may be worth a change, but if it is for anxiety, please try and stick it out at least one more week. I didn't drive for years and now I do!"

persephone12 replied: "I strongly suggest that you discuss the side effects with your doctor and together decide whether or not to change will be in your best insterest. Your doctor may adjust the dosage or change to a different medicine. It is not unusual for someone to try different medications before finally finding the one and the correct dosage that works for them. Each one of us responds differently to the same medication; therefore, please remember to only listen to a medical expert. I know that people mean well in giving advice, but remember that none of us know your specific medical condition is. You need to be your doctor's partner in your cure. Good luck to you."

Is Effexor or Cymbalta better? Which antidepressant has less sexual side effects and aids with weight loss? I need to get on an antidepressant and I was wondering which one has less sexual side effects. I also know some can cause weight gain and some can cause loss of appetite. I would rather take one that causes loss of appetite!!

spriggendust replied: "i found i lost a hell alot of weight on effexor although had bad sickness for two weeks not saying this would happen to you. Also the weight has stay off since as it seemed to decrease my appetite"

laiban11 replied: "I have never taken cymbalta so I am not sure how that one works. I do know that cymbalta is only aprroved to take for a short period of time. Since everyone responds to each medication differently I am not sure how you would respond to either of those. Wellbutrin is the only anti-depressant approved for not causing weight gain or having sexual side effects. I took wellbutrin, lexapro, prozac, nortriptylin, effexor and zoloft and all of those made my symptoms worse except for zoloft. I would have stayed on zoloft but it gave me tummy problems so i tried all the others and i was crying all the time or had bad anxiety. I finally just quit taking them. I figured the side effects for me were worse than the benefits. You basically have to do trial and error to see which anti depressant is right for you. Just tell your dr. what side effects you dont want to have and he can prescribe something to best meet your needs. None of them work right away so it might take up to 6-8 weeks to see improvement. Good luck. :)"

Anyone been on the antidepressant cymbalta? How was it? It makes me quite confused like i feel like im in a bit of a fog and it also makes me feel a bit like a child - it makes me agreeable, passive etc. I dont want to stop taking it because i sink into deep depression when i do and my depression is pretty bad. Anyone else been on it and what was your experience?

Hopefully Helpful replied: "I have been taking 60 mg. of Cymbalta for a few years. It seems to help me better than the medications I've taken in the past. Maybe you still need time to adjust to the Cymbalta. Please talk to your doctor about any concerns you have. I hope you will be doing better. Good Luck."

John Weelsen replied: "Drugs is a temporary solve of your problems... you need to find source of your depression. What are you scare or can't resolve in your life? I think you need psyc. dr. ... Anyone have experience with taking the antidepressant Cymbalta. How has it worked for you.? What are the side effects? Has it caused you to gain or lose weight?

Natalya replied: "My brother has been on Cymbalta for several months and it has worked fantastically well for him; he's like a different person. Previously he'd tried both Seroxat(Paxil) and Citalopram/Celexa, and neither did the trick. He did put on a bit of weight since starting the Cymbalta, but I'm not sure it was the drug which caused this and he's managed to lose it again quite easily."

Can the antidepressant Cymbalta cause Bipolar symptoms? A person was going through a bad divorce and was depressed. The MD put her on Cymbalta and she became much worse. More depressed, suicidal. Cymbalta kept being increased and she got worse. Then Antianxiety meds were added, she became worse and attempted suicide. She has improved since off Cymbalta but has a diagnosis of Bipolar and now on Lamictal. Could the Cymbalta caused all of this?

believeinwishes replied: "i would not know but try going onto webmd.com and look it up and click on symptoms hope this helps :)"

F T replied: "Some SSRI's like Cymbalta can actually cause you to be suicidal."

Jenise B replied: "there are bad side effects from antidepressents/antianxiety. a lot of them do cause worse effects. like paxcel is an antianxity and after taking it i did feel more depressed. it does make you feel more aware of when you are depressed (for me at least) ive never heard of becoming bipolar. its seems like meds arent working, they should try another approach to get through the hard time."

LIz replied: "yes, using antidepressants in bipolar disorder can cause suicidal thoughts"

ex dirty stripper replied: "All of those anti anxiety drugs have the potential to backfire and make things worse in some people. The best thing to do is get off all that stuff and stop supporting pharmaceutical companies that want us all numb and stupid!"

Altruist replied: "Cymbalta can trigger bipolar mania and increase bipolar depression as it works steadily on serotonin. But from what I've heard, you would have more difficulty working with an SSRI antidepressant, than an MRI (multiple reuptake inhibitor) like Cymbalta. You did not describe the anxiety meds specifically, where the more common type of anxiety meds are benzodiazepines. Regular use of benzodiazepines is know to further increase bipolar depression as well. It's not uncommon for bipolar patients to attempt suicide (30%). The theory with antidepressants and suicide, is that the individual may have suicidal ideation before taking the meds, but is too depressed to have the motivation to actually do it. Then the antidepressants kick in, the depression dissipates and if the thoughts are prevelent, it becomes easier for the person to follow through on them. It's important that the person be monitored by a Dr. while being prescribed antidepressants for this reason. In my opinion, the suicidal ideation was probably there way before the Cymbalta. In addition, if suicide or self harm is ever apparent, this person should partake in psychotherapy and not just medication alone."

Random Bloke replied: "Yes, possibly. These meds can all have paradoxical reactions, but the good news is that if the bipolar diagnosis is correct then Lamictal is a fantastic drug (I take it for bipolar)."

If you are taking the antidepressant Cymbalta, are you having difficulty with alot of weight gain? Drowsiness? I've been taking Cymbalta for several months, and WOW, have I packed on the pounds!! Am also very tired, especially mid-afternoon. Anyone else experiencing the same? I often ask myself, "Is it better to be fat and happy? or thin and sad?" HA! If you've gone off Cymbalta for the above reasons, what do you take now? Thanks for your help:)

Trainer & Chemist replied: "The benefits of Cymbalta will really be an individual experience, although these newer drugs tend to carry a lot of benefits and not nearly the amount of side effects as antidepressants in the past. One of the greatest benefits, if Cymbalta works for you, is that it seems to work more quickly than other antidepressants. Many people have to wait eight to sixteen weeks to even begin to feel the effects of any antidepressant. With Cymbalta a good deal of people have begun to see improvement in just a handful of days, or two to three weeks, which is a much more acceptable time frame. This is a huge benefit for people who are suffering from major depressive disorder as they don’t have to waste three to four more months of their life being depressed, if the medication does not seem to be working for them they can try something else. Relieving depression is a huge benefit to the life of anyone who suffers from major depressive disorder, or any type of depression that his or her doctor deems worthy of medicating. Depression can be as crippling as any physical disease, and stopping or even relieving the extent of the symptoms will be the single best benefit of any drug, including Cymbalta. For neuropathy pain, just having a medication that helps is a benefit enough. Some people really experience a difference in just a couple weeks, and taking that pain away can really transform a person’s life over night. Cymbalta works to basically marinate your neurons in these brain chemicals, and that helps to relieve pain. Often, when attempting to relieve nerve pain other medications are used in conjunction with Cymbalta to repair nerve tissue to relieve pain both short term and long term. Cymbalta is a very beneficial drug for many people who suffer from the awful nerve pain associated with diabetes and other diseases. SIDE EFFECTS : dry mouth, nausea, and constipation were experienced as a result of taking Cymbalta. The majority of these patients saw a drastic improvement of the symptoms after fourteen days on Cymbalta, which means their body was just becoming accustomed to the drug. While these are annoying symptoms, they are probably worth getting through for a few days or weeks so that you can improve the quality of your life. Only you can judge whether these are symptoms you can deal with, though they are common of most antidepressants on the market today. Temporary decreased appetite and weight loss once starting Cymbalta. Insomnia may result from Cymbalta use, or on the flip side you may experience excessive sleepiness or fatigue. Loss of libido and lack of orgasm were also experienced by this small population as well as problems with erection and ejaculation. One to less than ten percent also experienced dizziness, tremor, blurred vision, hot flashes, diarrhea or vomiting. A small percentage of patients also reported increased sweating when taking Cymbalta. In less than one percentage of men urinary hesitancy occurred as a result of taking Cymbalta. In a minute percent of the population the drug may also cause dilated pupils, and low blood sodium may occur, especially in older people. If you experience an allergic reaction to Cymbalta such as difficulty breathing, swelling in the throat, or hives you should seek medical attention immediately. You’ll also want to seek medical attention if you experience irregular pulse, low blood pressure often marked by dizziness or weakness, high blood pressure marked by a severe headache and blurred vision, chills or fever, unusual bleeding, or unexplained bruising. These are all more serious reactions and you’ll want to seek immediate medical attention. Precautions To Consider When Taking Cymbalta : If you have taken an MAOI type drug such as Marplan, Nardil, or Parnate in the last two weeks you’ll want to wait awhile until you begin to take Cymbalta. The majority of people are not on an MAOI type drug, so it’s likely that is precaution does not apply to you, but if it does you and your doctor should take this warning seriously. Very serious complications often arise when these two types of drugs are mixed, and the complications can be fatal. You’ll want to mention any drugs that you have been on for the last three to six months before starting Cymbalta. Many people don’t realize that many drugs remain in the system for days or even weeks after they are discontinued, so it’s very important to talk to your doctor and/or your pharmacist to be sure that you will not suffer from any ill-advised drug combinations. While most of what you take will probably not interact adversely with Cymbalta, you should let your doctor or pharmacist decide. You’ll want to let your doctor know if you suffer from any medical conditions, even if they do not seem to relate to your depression or neuropathy in any way. You’ll especially want to mention kidney or liver disease, diabetes, narrow angle glaucoma, high blood pressure, seizure, bipolar diso"

Does Cymbalta (antidepressant) interfere with Phentermine (diet drug)? I know some Dr.s were doing the Phentermine + Lexapro diet. I did not know how Cymbalta would effect the Phentermine's effectiveness as a diet suppressant..

Your Friendly Jewish Accountant replied: "A diet drug is full of chemicals that mimic amphetamines like meth. If you are actually interested in your mental health, you won't touch the stuff. Tell your doctor you're doing this and watch him hit the roof!"

How to wean myself off of Cymbalta (antidepressant)? I need information as to how to effectively wean myself off of Cymbalta 20mg. an antidepressant. I take one a day, and weigh about 160 pounds (if that has any bearing). I have been taking it for a little over two months now. My therapist doesn't want me to stop taking it, and is not listening to me, so she won't tell me. It's making my depression 100% worse. The doctor just tells me to talk to the therapist. I need to get off of this, and as soon as possible. Please help, as I have talked to the professionals and they will not help me. I've taken it long enough where it should have worked by now, as well. So please, no harping on me. The worsening depression, anxiety, moodiness and other symptoms that have gotten much worse since I started taking this, are interfering with my life, I need off of this. Thank you.

squirrel replied: "start taking it every other day for a few. then every third day for a few. You arent on that high a dose so it shouldnt be too bad. Im on 90 mg- it works for me but if I run out its hell. Just dont stop completely at once! Good luck and I hope you can find something that works better for you."
