Prozac side effects ( chest pain heart burn?)? I take 40mg of Prozac daily. But 5-10 minutes of taking it i experience really bad chest pain ranging from my chest to my lower throat. The pain is so intense that i have considered going to the hospital a couple of times. Any tips, suggestions, comments? Thanks.

DR V replied: "Could be a little reflux, but certainly worth giving a call to your doctor."

MvL replied: "One of the most serious possible side effects of Prozac can be serotonin syndrome, which may include these symptoms: Symptoms occur within minutes to hours, and may include: * Restlessness * Hallucinations * Loss of coordination * Fast heart beat * Rapid changes in blood pressure * Increased body temperature * Overactive reflexes * Nausea * Vomiting * Diarrhea To be diagnosed with serotonin syndrome, you must have been taking a drug that changes the body's serotonin levels (serotonergic drug) and have at least three of the following signs or symptoms: * Agitation * Uncoordinated movements (ataxia) * Heavy sweating not due to activity (diaphoresis) * Diarrhea * Overactive reflexes (hyperreflexia) * Fever * Mental status changes such as confusion or hypomania * Muscle spasms (myoclonus) * Shivering * Tremor You may not have serotonin syndrome - it could be an allergic reaction, or something else. It doesn't matter. If your medicine gives you chest pain, it's nothing to joke about. Discontinue use of your medication, and get to your doctor ASAP to tell him/her about it. He/she may be able to prescribe something different. Also, they need to check for possible long-term effects."

Prozac chest pains and fast heart rate? i only took 2 10 mg doses of prozac....and the second time i took it, i got horrible side effects including chest pains, fast heavy heart rate, dizziness and hot head is this normal? ive stopped taking the medication

citizen insane replied: "It's possible -- Prozac has pharmacological properties resembling stimulant drugs, which can produce all of the symptoms that you mentioned. Normally, tolerance is eventually established against these side-effects within a few weeks. You should tell your doctor about the adverse effects you're experiencing, and be switched to a different medication, if you are so inclined."

Bill C replied: "Fast heart rate and dizziness are a common side effect when one starts taking SSRIs like Prozac (fluoxetine). Most people find that side effects dissipate after a couple of days, or at most a week. When you start however, it is common to start on 10mg a day, and then after 3 or 4 days, move up to 20mg; this helps reduce the side effects."

I'm Taking 20 mg of Prozac And I'm Having Numbness In My Fingers At Night & Now Chest Pains? I don't know if I should stop the Prozac because it's working or what. At night I'll wake up and my ring finger and pinky finger on both my hands will be completely numb. Now I'm having chest pains on both my left and right side. I'm 21 years old, 5'9" tall, and I weight 386 pounds. I started taking Prozac March 9, 2009. What should I do?

tash replied: "call your dr and tell them. that is not good and should not be happening to you. go see a dr or emergency room. sounds like a stroke or heart attack."

Massive chest pain that the doctors cannot figure out...? I went to the hospital yesterday with chest pain. They took and X-ray. Ekg, and some blood. They said that they couldn't figure out what is wrong and sent me home with a prescription for Ibuprofen. I am still having chest pain. They said it wasn't my heart because when you push on the spot on my chest where it hurts, it hurts worse. Good for that, but that still doesn't tell me why I am having chest pain. I am taking Prozac for a hiatal hernia and Naproxen because I've thrown my back out several times. Any idea what could be wrong? I am a military spouse and the doctors over here are full until April. Any ideas? It hurts more when I lay down, then when I am sitting up, if that helps.

Douglas B replied: "Can you take a deep breath? If it gives you pain to take it then not only have you thrown your back out you have a rib out of place, they hurt like heck, I had one pop out for quite a while. It will require a chiro to put it back in place. If you can take the deep breath then I would try this put as much pressure as you can on the spot or right next to it press and hold for a twenty count. Then run finger along rib where you can and see if that helps loosen it up for you. If the problem continues contact me with what you've tried and what worked or didn't. I think I can still help you."

Lisa replied: "prozac has fluoride in it which can cause pains in the chest. as can naproxen. Avoid all msg products and aspartame. those realy cause tons of pains and realy high blood pressure. I am sorry your in pain. I know the feeling. I get realy bad pains in my back between the shoulder blades when I ingest msg accidently and I get asthma attacks. Ibuprophen counters msg symptoms but not for aspartame. aspartame turns to formaldahyde in the blood. Just an idea."

wasicus replied: "The Doctor told me mine was muscle spasms in the area of my heart. That is why even after it stops the spasm,it still hurts. It has worked itself sore. Also, there was a bit of inflamation found in the cavity around the heart. It is treatable at home with the prescribed medicine(if that is your case).Ahh.If it hurts mainly when you lay down,it could be acid reflux. That will cause major chest pain at times.Doctors suggest elevating the head of your bed a bid by putting a brick ect under the headboard legs. You also need to try some strong antacid.I find Prevacid to be best.Ask your Dr.for some free samples. You could try some over the counter stuff and elevating the headboard on your own and try ita while and just see if you feel better after a few days."

im having chest pain in my left side into my neck ekgs are ok cardiac enzymes came back good but i still have? chest pains no shortness of breath just scary i,m under a great deal of stress im on prozac and b/p meds

meynell35 replied: "Stress can cause chest pain. You state that your cardiac enzymes are ok but is your ECG normal, do you have pain on exertion. Have you had an exercise test? The cardiac enzymes are not always raised if a patient has angina for instance. As long as your other tests are ok and your Dr's have ruled out a gastric cause, you can be reassurred. However, be aware that if your chest pain continues or changes in nature, you should seek help immediately."

toodd replied: "GERD, heart, lung and gallstone are common causes with same symptom, or do more tests with EBT or CT scanning of heart."

prozac ????? Is there any possiblity that prozac could cause a heart attack?. I have read on other websites that prozac can cause heart damage and heart failer. Is this true?. Reason being someone close to me was on prozac for a long time then one day he had chest pains which he confused for heart burn and he took something for the heartburn went and rested fell asleep and never woke up. I am not looking to point a finger or blame i just trying to find out the truth of these claims about prozac. I have also read bad things about ssri,s and all the claims behind them. I now feel that the very people who give us these meds are not interested in our health or well being i believe they are more interested in money. If you could answer my question about prozac causing heart failer or heart damage i would be greatfull. I would also like to hear your views on the above. I thought it was true. I honestly believe that if it was not for prozac my cousin would still have a farther i would have a uncle and my cousins daughter would have a grand dad. I still keep his yahoo id going in his memory.

gplayer replied: "This is completely true. i've seen it on the news numerous times, so it's pretty bad."

Wayne L replied: "There appears to be conflicting results from at least two studies on people with heart failure and depression. One states that people with heart failure and depression do worse than those without depression. Other studies say Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, such as Prozac, Paxil, and Zoloft, the most commonly used class of antidepressants, have a good effect on heart outcome. Check Davis Drug Guide under Prozac for possible side effects and adverse reactions. Check Amazon for prices."

bri replied: "Here is a list of some side affects of prozac and their frequency copied from an article Cardiovascular System Frequent: hemorrhage, hypertension, palpitation; Infrequent: angina pectoris, arrhythmia, congestive heart failure, hypotension, migraine, myocardial infarct, postural hypotension, syncope, tachycardia, vascular headache; Rare: atrial fibrillation, bradycardia, cerebral embolism, cerebral ischemia, cerebrovascular accident, extrasystoles, heart arrest, heart block, pallor, peripheral vascular disorder, phlebitis, shock, thrombophlebitis, thrombosis, vasospasm, ventricular arrhythmia, ventricular extrasystoles, ventricular fibrillation. You will see that it is quite possible that the person you knew did die from the affects of the drug. They also interact with some other drugs occasionally with with fatal consequences. I think with all drugs there are some side effectsd and you have to weigh the benefits against the drawbacks. I do think the health professionals find it quicker easier and cheaper to rely on drugs rather than seek other therapies. Clinical trials have shown that drug therapy combined with counselling is the most effective form of therapy. Exercise can help at it increases seratonin levels in the brain."

Burning pain in chest, left sided, arm, shoulder, hand, fingers? I am 44 years old and have fibromyalgia. I have had 3 EKGS and an endoscopy for my acid reflux. I take meds for the acid reflux as well as low dose prozac for the fibromyalgia. I have burning upper left chest pain that moves to left shoulder and left arm and fingers. If I twist my left arm or fingers I can feel it hurt more and it also hurts to the touch on my upper left chest. I want to believe it could be chest wall pain. I also get an occasional palpatation and can feel my heart beating sometimes. My BP is basically normal. I believe I get anxiety from the worry of the pain too. Does anyone have any clue what this could be? It has been going on for some time but worsened last week.

Tammy replied: "Honestly this sounds like a begining heart attack. I would call your doctor!"

Tack replied: "Sounds like your having a stroke. Any blurred vision?"

kusheillover replied: "could be heart attack warnings, stroke warnings, or pinched nerve in your upper shoulder. pulled muscle possibly as well. go to the doc and tell him..or her."

Jen replied: "It seams that you are having a heart attack, go to the emergency room immediately"

princess_mons replied: "sounds like it may be cardiac related... heart attack or not.. im not sure but you should get checked out... sooner than later... you could have cardiac stuff going on with a normal BP. All the best."

Sezbot replied: "Hi. Firstly, and i know this may be hard to do when you are experiencing symptoms like this, but try not to panic. Panicing can often make your symptoms worse or exaggerate how bad they really are. I would recommend you to talk to your doctor as soon as you can about your symptoms to rule out heart attack or even angina (a condition caused by a build up of plaque in the arteries in the heart, restricting blood flow). They will also be able to make sure you have no heart irregularities that could be causing the palpitations, but please don't read this and think you have all these things. This is just a precaution. You mentioned you have fibromyalgia, i have done some research and i hope this helps put you at ease. "Fibromyalgia are chronic, widespread pain and tenderness to light touch.......may also experience heightened sensitivity of the skin (also called allodynia), tingling of the skin (often needle-like), achiness in the muscle tissues, prolonged muscle spasms, weakness in the limbs, and nerve pain.......pain may also be localized in areas such as the shoulders, neck, low back, hips, or other areas" Further information indicates that different fibromyalgia patient suffers from different or varied symptoms. Of course i would still make an appointment with your doctor to have a definitive answer, but i hope this gives you peace of mind for now. Good luck. ^ _ ^"

MeInThisWorld replied: "ask for an echocardiogram-not just EKGs-may or may not be cardiac-but they are definate warnign signs of a heart problem..."

Chest pains, fast heavy heart rate & blurry vision with prozac? has anyone experienced this? im scared to keep taking this medication!

Loving Life replied: "Call the doctor who prescribed it."

Monica V replied: "STOP TAKING IT! Call your doctor! How fast is your heart rate? If it is too fast for too long, please go to the ER, if you can't get a hold of your doctor."

What's causing pain on the right side of my chest? Since late last Saturday night I have had severe pain on the right side of my chest, right underneath my breast. It hasn't gone away. It's an aching pain, and it really hurts when I sit up, also if I stretch the wrong way, yawn, cough, or sneeze. I don't know how to describe the pain except it's similar to the pain I felt when I fractured my sternum in a car accident over a year ago, except now the pain is only on the right side, whereas last year the pain was squarely in the center of my chest. I had a chest x-ray before I went into the hospital in March and they didn't say anything looked bad (and I saw the x-ray and it looked fine, not to mention I hadn't had pain from the car accident in 9 months). This pain is just debilitating. It makes it impossible to get out of bed (on top of my depression) and I've been sleeping a lot. It hurts to move. The only real change that correlates with this is the doctor changed my Prozac from 20 mg/day to 40 mg/day last friday, the day before the pain started. But before that I had been taking 20 mg for 3 weeks, and 10 mg for 1 week before that. I also took Prozac for over a year 4-5 years ago, and never had this side effect. On the pamphlet from Walgreen's, chest pain is NOT listed as one of the possible side effects. Any ideas what could be the cause of this, or what the best thing to do is? I know last year with the fractured sternum all I could do was wait. I have been taking ibuprofen which dulls the pain and vicodin which gets rid of it completely. I have also used a heating pad but it doesn't seem to be of much use, probably because the area that is in pain is right underneath my breast and can't be gotten to externally. Note: Please don't tell me to go see a doctor. If I could afford to, I would have already. Note: The heart is located on the left side of my chest, which feels fine. My pain is on the right side of my chest. Also, I am 23 and have had no heart problems, and none of my family has any history of heart problems.

Allison T replied: "dehydration can lead to pleurisy. Check it out on WebMD. I was taking 40 mg of prozac, and it was increased to 60 mg a day-it was too much. Ask your Doc if you should take another med to relieve your depression that doesn't have such nasty side effects. Some are better than others, and it all DEPENDS ON HOW YOUR BODY deals with it."

Breanne replied: "go 2 a doctor any way. i think it is ur heart"

music replied: "A lot of the time, things like this are just nothing. Maybe you worked out too much. If it keeps hurting for a week, then see a doctor. I know you can't afford it, but it's better to live and spent some money than die with money."

Jeffrey H replied: "go c a doctor lol jk ITS PROBABLY BECAUSE YOUR DOCTOR CHANGED YOUR MEDICINE im a guy, so idk if theres different pains that men and women experience. so idk if its a women thing, because of her boobies (lol) IDK"

Erik replied: "It could be several things a bone infection or a condition known as pleurisy as what Allison said; sometimes people get a fluid build up which causes a pain or even an infection which causes the pain. Give it a week and if it doesn't get better go to the doctor."

miss_gretchen21 replied: "I have some ideas on what it could be. I always say that severe pain always needs to be addressed immediately, but I do also realize you do not have insurance, so, that is up to you. I understand the burden medical bills can create. I'm young like you, I'm 23 and I owe thousands because I was unemployed for a short time. Regardless, here are some possibilities that a doctor could assess if you do find access to one or apply for medical aid. 1) It could be from the accident. Something to do with the ribs. (The possibilities are kind of endless here,: rib injury, Costochondritis, lung problem) 2) Some sort of adverse reaction to your medication increase (regardless of what the pamphlet says) 3) Gallbladder related, although it's also usually associated with pain after eating and nausea/vomiting. I had gallbladder disease and had pain right where you described it: right under my right breast. It was horrible pain and no CT scan, XRAY, or Ultrasound (even with CCK) found it. I needed a HIDA scan w/ CCK to be diagnosed. I had to have it removed due to disease this past March after wondering for two years and trying diet changes. Nothing worked except surgery for me. I wish I had the answer for you but obviously I don't have a medical degree and no one can dx over the internet. However, if you would like a doctors/nurses opinion, there is a site I've used once that was very helpful: . It costs about $9 and they gave me excellent advice within hours. If you do choose to go that route, make sure you give as much detail as possible in your question, to yield the best results! I hope that helped & I hope you get the answer soon!"

Diabetic with chest/lung pain during light exercise....what is this? I'm a 34 year old male with type 2. I lost a lot of weight and felt so good, I convinced myself I didn't need to monitor my blood sugar. After about a year of this false belief, I thought I was having a heart attack with chest pressure and difficulty breathing. Went to hospital, full cardiac workup/stress test negative. Blood sugar around 350 then. Now, blood sugar down around 140 thanks to metformin but chest, specifically lung pressure and pain still happen daily. Sometimes without exercise but usually short walks or even sex brings on the pain and I have to stop. Doc's said it must be anxiety and panic attacks and put me on prozac. I can't believe panic attacks started out of the blue 6 weeks ago and have continued daily. I'm also not panicked when they happen, but I am a little high strung in general. Anyone have any idea what this lung pain could be? I'm having a very hard time buying into anxiety.

prad replied: "Please see a cardiac immediately.... most urgent.... visit the hospital for a complete check up."

STAR replied: "Sorry to say I don't have the answer but have been going through the same thing.Seems to be getting worse so my thought on this is to push for more test. Better safe then sorry.Who knows our bodies better then we do and if something is not right we have the right to say find the reason. Not just except there answer if we feel other wise.good luck."

24/7 replied: "Im diabetic too. I kinda have some pressure in my trunk cavity after eating. Uncomfortable. My trigs are 284. My blood sugars fasting is at 184 according to blood work I just had done. My cholesterol is 216. I guess I am fortunate to be able to do something about it and its not too late. Hang in there you take care of yourself and make the doctors check you out its your right!"

Mr. Peachy® replied: "Could be lactic acidosis.... one of the side affects of Metformin. Intense exercise can bring it on, but folks with existing heart or liver problems can get it as well. Read this: You need to learn as much as you can about managing your diabetes... pronto. p.s. Fire your doctor and find a new one who is more familiar with diabetes and Metformin."
