Doctor has switched me from 10 mg Lipitor to Simvastatin 40 mg? I understand this is because the local trusts can buy simvastatin cheaper then Lipitor. I had been taking Lipitor 10 mg for 4 years and it did lower my cholesterol. I am wondering why I am having to take 40 mg of Simvastatin ....is that the equivalent of 10 mg of lipitor? My husband takes Simvastatin 20 mg and it works ok for him.

Barberry replied: "Perhaps your total cholesterol was good, but your LDL (bad cholesterol) may have still been a bit too high. Different meds have different actions in how they lower or correct your cholesterol levels. It may also have been related to cost. As for the dosage, without knowing your lab results, we can't say why he chose that dose. If you're entering menopause, your risk of heart problems is higher. Or if you have high BP that is also a factor. Your husband my not have those same risks or have as high LDL. The dosages from one medication to another do not usually correlate, so you can't really say it's equivalent. Also, if the Lipitor wasn't doing the complete job, you don't want something that is equivalent; you want something better. :) Next time you see your doc, ask him if you need that much."

But since you ask I do not see any difference in action of the medication, it works on the early stages of synthesis of cholesterol, basically the same way. There can be some new discovery like one has less side effects or another medicine you take doesn't work well with that med so they change it for that reason. Also between you and your husband everyone works differently with meds, and you might need more for the same effects. And here is the big one........ It could be the Dr. gets a kickback for prescribing that new med, from the company who makes it, or your insurance has a drug formulary on what they will pay for and that med is on it. for the same reason as the Dr $ MONEY$. How simvastatin tastes? I was on statin medications (Lipitor, pravastatin) for a few years. Both of these drugs had a strong bitter taste when swallowed. Now my doctor switched me to simvastatin which has no taste at all. I am buying this simvastatin from a Canadian pharmacy and I am worried it might be a fake. Anyone out there has this experience?
