What's the difference between 'hydrochloride' and 'dihydrochloride'? I've got 2 packs of antihistamine tablets (Glapharm hayfever and allergy relief) - the packet Ive been using are called 'cetirizine hydrochloride'. I bought a new pack to use, thinking they were the same but these new ones are called ' cetirizine dihydrochloride' - what's the difference & will it be ok for me to take the new pack?

tota replied: "the (DI)"

two2fly replied: "The difference is the level of Hyrdogen in the compound. I see no reason you can't use the other package."

bob shark replied: "It may be a new formulation, using 2 hydroclorides in the molecule instead of one, or maybe they are just being more specific about the chemical composition than in the past. Take as Directed"

Lorna replied: "Hi. Hydrochloride: a salt, esp. of an alkaloid, formed by the direct union of hydrochloric acid with an organic base that makes the organic constituent more soluble. Dihydrochloride: a hydrochloride containing two molecules of hydrochloric acid. So basically, dihydrochloride contains one extra molecule of hydrochloric acid, so they've probably worked out a better formula for allergies. Good luck! Lorna"

spencer s california replied: "I think that "DI" equals two Hydrochlorides :)"

TweetyBird replied: "The most obvious difference is one hydrogen molecule. It's fine to take them."

Eternal replied: "Host consciousness: In the context of this question the pharmaceuticals are bio-equivalent. Your body will not know this difference, so don't worry. In many cases it could make a difference - but not this one. To all intents and purposes they are the same."

Baboo replied: "Both medications are the same and you can safely take the new one. The hydrogen level in both medications is THE SAME. In chemical naming, alot of times the (DI) naming is excluded because it is understood - in chemistry the same number of hydrogen atoms would surround the chlorine atoms (so the manufacturer left it out in the original medication). It is wrong to say that the number of hydrogen atoms changed unless the entire compound changed and was called something entirely different."

cetirizine hydrochloride (zyrtec) from online pharmacy? hi...i used an online pharmacy to buy 180 10 mg cetirizine hydrochloride pills (generic zyrtec...for allergies)...normally they are oval but the ones that came in the mail are round and unmarked. they came packaged in little boxes labeled cetirizine hydrochloride and it has all the info on the boxes and also the bubble packs but ive never seen them round and unmarked before. i just want to make sure that i didnt get ripped off and that they are in fact 10 mg of cetirizine hydrochloride. any help is appreciated. thanks! i got a 6 month supply because i have very bad allergies and take one a day. when they went OTC, the price went up, which is why i don't get them in a drugstore. i used an online pharmacy once before with no problems but i used a different one this time and the pills do not look the same as they always have - round with no marking instead of oval with marking. also, online pharmacies are not illegal and i came on here for an answer to my question - because i am obviously concerned - not to read your unnecessary speculation on why i purchased a 6-month supply.

TheBarbequeMan replied: "You should NEEEEEVER use online pharmacy drugs. It is dangerous and illegal, and not smart. Drugs from online pharmacies come from GOD KNOWS where, and are quite often contaminated, and the drugs quite often have the wrong doses, or are not metered correctly, and are cut up with other drugs to intensify the strength. The fact that the drugs are not the right size, shape, markings indicates that it is COUNTERFEIT, which it is. Don`t take them! You may kill yourself. Plus, online pharmacies are illegal, and you could face trouble. EDIT: Guy below me - Thanks, meant to check the legality.. They aren`t illegal, but they are unsafe. Thanks, bud."

redstrat5 replied: "online pharmacies are not illegal as the FDA has no power over the internet, but they are extremely unsafe and the drugs they sell are usually either placebos, counterfeits, or drugs treating opposite diseases, all which can be harmful. many over the counter drugs are unmarked, but unmarked meds from an online pharmacy is a no no. i would never take a med from an online pharmacy. their are lists on the FDA website of legitimate online pharmacies and unlicensed ones. i would check that out. without an imprint (markings on the pill) i can not tell you what it is without chemically testing it. i would not take the pill"

Gonzo replied: "Generic medications are supposed to be marked with some sort of number for easy identification in case someone takes them not knowing what they are, get sick, and need medical attention (doctors can look them up in the Merck Manual or PDR to figure out what the pills are). Unmarked tablets are of concern and you should not risk your well being and safety by taking these pills. Who knows just what exactly they may be (some investigations have found that these pills are actually things like drywall, plaster, cement, among other things). Since Zyrtec is now OTC and generics are available, you should just head down to the nearest store and pick some up (although why you would need a 6 month supply of Zyrtec also arouses suspicion). Sorry to say but I think you've been had."
