Buspar For Anxiety Disorders Information in Answers
Anyone taking Buspar for Anxiety Disorders? I have been prescribed Buspar by my doctor and was taking 15mg/day for the frist few months than 30mg/day for the next few but have since stopped taking it because i didn't like how it made me feel. It was liking walking around with a pillow or fish bowl on my head all the time, it made me tired/dizzy and i felt like my feelings were stiffled- like it took me a while to feel happy, sad, excited, lonely etc. when an event happened. I used to say it made me feel like an emotional zombie. Any one else taken this medication and had different or similar symptons? Did you like being on this medication, did it help you or make your anxiety worse? I used to get bad anxiety attacks before taking Buspar and while taking it but now that i have been off it voluntarily and have had positive changes happen in my life to reduce stress (quit smoking pot, left emotianally abusive ex BF, moved back home w/ parents etc...) i no longer get them that often.

bubbles replied: "why didnt you consult your doctor and tell him/her that it was making you feel this way?Sometimes stopping a medication can have some side effects if you dont taper off and just stop cold turkey.Be careful because the anxiety could come back and be much worse the next time. The medication does stay in your system for awhile after you have quit taking it.The doctor could have changed your medication for you also.Quite often people feel they are better and quit taking a medication and if they do so on their own they are taking a potenially fatal mistake."

BuSpar, Anti-Anxiety Medicine: Does it work?!? I definitely know I have Generalized Anxiety Disorder. & it is driving me absolutely crazy. My mind won't stop, no matter what I do. I try meditating and stuff, but nothing seems to work. I can't stop thinking about one thing over and over again, even if I come to a conclusion about it (does that make sense?) and I just want to be able to live in the moment & live my life! I want to try BuSpar, an Anti-Anxiety medicine. I'm going to talk to my doctor about this soon but I'm just wondering if any of you are on it, and does it work? Thanks alot!

mommanuke replied: "My sister is on it and swears by it. But there are a lot of other meds you can try if that doesn't work. Let your doctor decide which is best to start with, then go from there."

mlgpostpwn replied: "take five xannax and a shot of jack daniels..itll all go away"

Stephanie replied: "yes! and without all those nasty side effects of xanax and a few others. it's non addicting too! this medicine will calm your nerves without doping you up. you will be able to function just as you normally would without all the anxiety! good luck and smart choice to ask about! :0)"

Amanda B replied: "every medication works differently for different people. what works for me, may not work for you."

Tangi M replied: "I'm on just my 3rd day of taking buspar and I am feeling stuff I had not expected. I feel very hyper and have tons of energy, like I'm over-caffeinated or on speed. I am suddenly extremely productive at both work and home, and getting lots of stuff done. I have also been more talkative and outgoing. It's weird! I did not expect this and can't say my general anxiety is improved. I understand this drug takes a while to kick in, so maybe these early feelings are just side effects?"

joan t replied: "I took Buspar for a short time about 20 years ago, when someone who was close to me had died. It worked just fine. It was to help me from getting too upset and crying too much. I had no side effects and it really worked! There was no problem stopping taking it. Hope this helps somebody!"

Anyone out there who's taking buspar for anxiety? I'm 16, and i have GAD (generalized anxiety disorder) and panic disorder. I had depression, but cymbalta took care of that. I was on effexor, which was truly horrible, then cymbalta for a year, and I have jut gotten off 2 weeks ago. GETTING OFF WAS HORRIBLE. I don't want to get on anti-depressents again, so i'm wondering if you recommend buspar, and if not...do you recommend any other kind?

lil bit replied: "Buspar made me sick to my stomach. I take Klonopin for anxiety - it has worked best; but be caredul - it can be habit forming. I have taken 0.5 - 1.5mg for the past 18 years (usually 0.5 mg daily)"

ecopro10 replied: "I'm a lot older, but also had the same experiences with Cymbalta and Effexor. Hated Effexor and Cymbalta worked great. I was on Buspar for 3 years afterwards. Never did a thing for me. I have GAD as well and have just gone back on Cymbalta indefinitely. It's better than the anxiety. Good luck!"

beetlemilk replied: "Buspar is considered mickey mouse (small effect), cymbalta and effexor aren't. You could certainly try it. What I would recommend is 0.25mg xanex, possibly paxil (but its another antidepressant, also pretty mickey mouse at low doses) Vistaril is another that is used like busbar."

mlou2 replied: "i took buspar for anxiety, and it really helped me. although i had to quit taking it because everyday at same time i would get extremely dizzy like i was going to black out, so i had to quit taking it. i have success with xanax and celexa."

Any one taking Buspar or Busprone(sp?) for Anxiety disorder(s)? I've been taking Busprone for generalized anxiety (i've also been diagnosed w/ depression, OCD and prone to eating disorders) and was being inconsistent with taking it for the first few months (started at 15mg 1st 3 mo. than upped to 30mg by my Dr.) than discontinued for a few months b/c side effects and just started taking it consistantly the last few weeks and i plan to untill i meet with my Dr. again. When i was taking the 30mg a day it made me feel dizzy, sleepy and like i had a pillow over my head all the time- i felt like an un-emotional zombie. I started taking 15mg/day for 2 weeks now and it's made it easier to control my obsessive thoughts/worries and i don't get the 30mg/day side effects accept sleepiness sometimes. It has also helped me deal with obsessive thoughts on food and kept me from restricting/binging cycle i go through every few months. Anyone else taking this medication and have similar side effects? How does this medication effect your anxiety?

indonev replied: "works a bit. Lil side affects, but no biggie."

victor 7707 replied: "I took it for a couple months, it didn't help me at all, it didn't have any side effects for me, in fact I really couldn't even tell I was taking it. But if it helps you stick with it, because its hard to find that right meds that help you in particular the most, good luck and God Bless!!"

I just perscribed Buspar for anxiety? SHe put me on 5mg ...3 times a day...15 mg a day basically. I want to know how long will it take to start helping me? I have had severe anxiety attacks. I freak out and have low tolerance of things arounfd me. i am an insomniac as well. I lost my daughter who was 8 to cancer and I also lost my nephew who was almost 9 to cancer...he was my twin sisters son. i have not coped with it yet nor i do not think i have gone thru a healthy grieving process. i have night terrors...nightmares they wake me up in middle of the night. i get severe nausea and dizzyness and my heart races alot.i feel paranoid and scared sometimes. i feel like there is a lump in my throat and it bugs me. and tightness in my chest. is busbar good and effectic on an anxiety disorder such as this? what other options do i have?i really want to make the meds work. i hear sometimes they take weeks to start working and i felt discouraged by that. : ( help?

Joe924 replied: "Mental/Mood medications usually take 2-3 weeks to fully take effect."

Dudette replied: "Negative emotions (like sadness, stress, anger, etc.) causes your Serotonin production to be low; when your Serotonin level is low, you are more prone to getting Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Depression, etc. Medication like Antidepressants (SSRI - Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) helps to boost Serotonin level. But there are natural ways to do it without medication. There's this strange herb called "St John's Wort" - it is said to be more effective than Prozac. No, it is not for mild depression only and ignore those sayings. In fact, it does help anxiety and panic-attacks as St John's Wort works like prozac. Other natural ways will be exercise, diet, more exposure to light, etc. The problem is that, even if your Serotonin is balanced... you have that "learned behavior" in your mind. You need to break that initial cycle to destroy that learned behavior - Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) does this. A technique that you can use without CBT will be Distraction... There are several other techniques to help cope them! Ok, to use Distraction: Firstly, try to.... Extracted from Source."

Has anyone ever beaten an anxiety disorder? I have social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and obsessive compulsive disorder. I'm on Prozac and Buspar, but still feel like crap. Has anyone ever beaten an anxiety disorder, with medication or meditation or anything?

JackiePaperClips! replied: "Hey I beat it everday, peter."

Lila replied: "Yes with the right medications and therapy. If your medications aren't working for you it would be a good idea to try something different as some will work for others but not for you. There is help if you are persistent in working towards medications that work for you. I know how you suffer and you don't have to there is help. It just sometimes takes a while to find what is right for you. Please keep trying and good luck to you!"

Maria replied: "Ask your doctor to put you on Lexapro. This has worked wonders for me. I have tried prozac and buspar and they didn't do anything for me either. Switch your medication and you will see the difference (trust me)"

alex♥ replied: "I have social anxiety disorder too but right now it's getting a lil worse. My dad used to be on prozac for that too but he now left that medication because it isn't really good for you. It can be addicting, so now he is taking flax oil and St. Johns wort. It's all organic and it was a really big step for him to leave the prozac behind."

EJ replied: "I have social anxiety disorder, and possibly even generalized anxiety disorder. I'm not on anything, but it helps to talk to people on Yahoo!Answers sometimes. Helping other people, and talking to ones I don't know, can sometimes make me feel better because at least I'm doing something for other people. It gets nerve-racking having to talk to people in person, and no one really understands that, because I AM a talkative person. But it just helps to focus on something else for a while when I'm in this "hermit" stage. I usually keep myself in solitude, and read and write a lot, and I find that it helps when I want to escape peer pressure and social distress. I don't think medications really help a person, they're just ways for doctors to screw you up more and make money off of your suffering. There's not really anything a person can do when it comes to anxiety, except for to push themselves out of the house and force themselves to talk to other people (I haven't done that, yet, and I probably never will, but it helps to just think of myself doing that sometimes....). Just write or talk to people on here. We understand you, and it helps us, too. Good luck, Peter."

ellie replied: "Hi, I don't think that it is possible to beat an anxiety disorder but it is possible to manage it. I also endorse Lexapro, I began taking it after Prozac and it's much less sedating and more effective. I have recently begun intensive cognitive behavioral therapy and I am making small progresses. But i do believe that the progress I'm making will be permanent and stay with me even without meds. This CBT(cognitive behavioral therapy) will take a long time and a lot of work but I know it's worth the struggle to believe that things can get better. Best of luck."

ste l replied: "i know this might sound harsh but prozac and other drugs that the doctor might give you are not the answer. you are putting your head in the hands of others . its your head you can fix it be strong you can beat it i did"

II replied: "i did , partially i felt surprised when i realized how social i was"

Fred W replied: "This is a great course/product which helped me basically CURE myself of anxiety and stop it for good, check it out below: I highly recommend it, good luck."

Is it bad to mix buspar and diazpam (Valium)? I just take diazpam (valium) as needed for panic attacks but I'm on Buspar indefinately for Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

Rachel T. replied: "Just be careful when you mix anti-anxiolytics with pain killers such as diazepam because it could cause breathing problems. If these were not prescribed by your doctor simultaneosly or if one or the other drugs is not yours it is NOT safe to mix drugs. Contact your local pharmacist or primary care doctor. Remember: Anna Nicole's son died of a combination of Demerol and Anti-psychotics so be careful!"

wonderbread replied: "An anti-anxiety and anti-depressant can be used in conjunction with one another. I've used both to treat depression and anxiety together (xanax with prozac or xanax with effexar). Usually an anxiety medication is used as needed basis. However, depending on the chemical makeups of buspar and valium, you need to check with your doctor to make sure these are okay to take together. Also, do not drink alcohol while taking these medications. Alcohol can stop the chemicals from working properly together. Hope this helps."

ralexander replied: "The combination of these two anxiety medications can be taken safely if prescribed by your doctor."

Is anxiety caused by a chemical imbalance or is a chemical imbalance caused by constant anxiety? Is medication necessary to defeat generalized anxiety disorder? I feel like it's all psychological and can't seem to beat it using medication. I'm on Zoloft and Buspar right now...

C C C replied: "Your anxiety is caused by a deep root stress that affected you earlier in life. It has caused your body to be on constant alert and caused your brain to signal danger when there is none. Be careful with all these anti depressants. Science is showing that you can defeat alot of depression and anxiety on your own without medication. Your problem is caused by a root stress which can lead to chemical imbalance. Remember anxiety is NOT a chemical imbalance it is over active nerve cells in the brain from a root stress. Zoloft is for depression Please read this you need to take the power back from depression and anxiety."

looseverses replied: "The fact that some people experience relief from anxiety symptoms when they take antidepressants supports the belief that brain chemistry is involved. Other underlying causes can be heredity and life experiences (those that cause trauma). Anxiety is very common these days, and if you research the connection between diet and state of mind you will find much to support the idea that diet and enviromental toxins have a role in the incidence of anxiety (as well as other mental health symptoms). [Check out books like "Optimum Nutrition for the Mind" ] The physiological response that we all come to recognize as anxiety is actually mediated by the adrenal glands. They respond to stress (real or perceived) by stepping up the production of adrenalin. Adrenalin causes your heart to beat faster, your palms to get sweaty, your breathing to become shallow, your vision to blur...and more. Of course, this physiological response adds to the stress you feel, so it can become a vicious cycle that just seems to escalate out of control. You can interrupt this cycle by focusing on your breathing. Actually, you do more than just focus on your breath. You actively and purposefully direct your breathing while you focus. The easiest breathing pattern to use is to inhale very slowly, evenly and deeply through your nose to a very slow count of eight. Remember, keep your focus on your breath. Hold that breath for a slow count of four, then slowly and evenly exhale through your mouth to a slow count of eight. If you are not able to bring air deep into your chest, hold your arms over your head while you repeat this pattern. That will open up your ribcage and allow air to flow deeper into your lungs. If you are out in public and not wanting your arms up in the air, just place your hands casually on your head...it will accomplish the same thing. Continue to do this focused breath work for several minutes. You should feel your body calming as you do this. It's a good idea to examine your diet. Keep a food journal, making note of what you eat throughout the day as well as jotting down how you are feeling at various points. You may be able to identify a food that is triggering your symptoms. Many people scoof at the idea that food has anything to do with mental symptoms. But if you think about it, your body and your brain have very specific nutritional needs. If your diet fails to provide for those needs, you will become more and more symptomatic as nutritional deficiencies develop. The best diet is one that is based on whole foods. That means vegetables, fruits, WHOLE grains (not processed cereals that claim to be made from whole grains), and protein from healthy sources. The standard American diet (SAD) is full of fast foods, processed foods and foods/drinks high in sugar. These are collectively known as 'junk food'. Fast foods are quite low in nutrients, so do nothing to support a healthy body or mind. Processed foods likewise are low in nutrition, but also high in artificial ingredients, many of which are neurotoxic (toxic or poisonous to the nervous system, the brain is part of the nervous system). Sugar is pretty much void of any nutrition, but worse, it actually depletes the body of some very critical nutrients needed to keep the nervous system healthy (again, the brain is part of the nervous system). So you want to eliminate as much of the junk food from your diet as you can, replacing with whole food choices. It's a good idea to take a few supplements in addition to eating a healthy diet. * a good multi-vitamin/mineral complex to be sure you are getting all the nutrients you need in a balanced formula. Take as directed on package. * a B100 formula...taken daily to support a healthy nervous system. * a very good EFA (essentail fatty acid) formula, again, critical for a healthy nervous system. * and a good enzyme formula that contains protease, amylase, cellulase, and lipase enzymes ....to insure your body is able to digest and assimilate all the nutrients in your diet and your supplements. Take the best care (that you know how) of your body. Make it a lifelong goal to continue learning better self-care. The healtlhier your body, the healthier your brain, the better your mental state will be."

Since generalized anxiety disorder is incurable, what's the point of living? If I can't get rid of my anxiety completely, I don't want to go on living. The only way I push my self through anything is by thinking that sooner or later I'll "fix" my anxiety, mostly through psychological means. I'm on zoloft and buspar...but my anxiety is still really bad. If I can't be who I want to be, and I can't be with my anxiety, what's the point of life?

Why is it? replied: "i know what u mean. you'll probably get alot of stupid answers, but i know how u feel."

To Put It Bluntly replied: "I understand what you mean completely..it's so hard to get through life sometimes I just want to stay in bed and not go anywhere. I have severe panic attacks randomly, like I'll be at the store and it will just hit me, I hate it! And what really sucks is people that don't have anxiety problems, think you can just get over it just like that. It's hard, just know you aren't the only one who goes through it."

lil bit replied: "The way I see it: God created me and he has allowed my condition for whatever reason. I have had to learn to cope with the anxiety. I am on Abilify, Klonopin, Luvox and Wellbuterin. I am disabled. But my life is so much better now. I still get anxiety - I just have to learn to live with it. Sometimes I have to double up the Klonopin; maybe incorporate some exercise/yoga into my schedule; also some deep breathing exercises as well as therapy. I guess I have accepted it - but I still have my days when I wish I "was just normal" My life can be lived contnently even with anxiety"

mickey replied: "I have generalized anxiety disorder, and I had to try different meds until they found the right one for me. I take effexor xr and kolonopin. My anxiety is comeplety gone. The anxiety will never go away without taking some kind of meds. Good luck."

Ann Taylor E replied: "I understand how you're feeling. Sometimes it feels like it will never go away, even with medication. Think of all the people who would miss you if you weren't here. You are probably really important to your friends or family. You have good and bad days, but that's life and it's something we all have to learn to deal with; some it is just harder for than others. Try to point out the good things (which is easier said than done). Talking about your feelings really helps and confiding in someone you trust, so that during your down moments they are always there to lift you up."

margie k replied: "It's not that it's incurable but a lot of times you grow out of it. Meanwhile find a good therapist, it may take several tries to find the right one. Try different meds, these sound like they are not working for you, make sure you tell your doctor so you can possibly find some relief. Don't use caffeine or drugs or alcohol, these all make it worse. Make sure you get out in the sun every day for at least 15 minutes and at least that much exercise too. Take a good multivitamin, a B50, at least 2,000 mg. of Ester-C, and a few fish oil capsules daily. These all help. Make sure you eat every few hours to keep your blood sugar stable - have you ever had your blood sugar checked ? do you feel weird if you don't eat ? blood sugar problems can add tremendously to GAD - esp. if you have low blood sugar. Please, try these suggestions and get the relief you need. And as I started with, many people grow out of this - as they get older it gets better or goes away."

vegitotwo replied: "The fingers are not equal, some people have different maybe more severe problems than others. I don't believe that anxiety is incurable, but I do believe that something like anxiety cannot be cured my modern medicine. The real question is what gives you such anxiety? Possibly talk to friends and family and maybe you can find out the cause of this anxiety and start to face the REAL problem."

Falling Upwards *Floating Away* replied: "I can relate, I'm just learning about my anxiety issues. What's the point? Not to mention they run with things like Bi-Polar and OCD. It's like a snowball effect."

kauriwolf replied: "A large point of despair is seeing no end to a problem. What many meds help with this point is having you stop feeling, or makes you feel good. What gave me hope was realizing the meds helped me realize who I was and what it felt like to FEEL good. I then used the meds like a meditation of realizing who I was and working to that end. I got to the point where I am now off meds via meditation, diet, and athletics. There is hope. Many find this works better when reaching out to groups working through this also. Not to wallow in problems of life, to find a mentor to become what you dream you want for yourself. Find someone who had what you have and are living the way you wish. This all worked and is working for me."

Drew L replied: "I am a 15 year old male, and I feel the exact same way. I really need help. But ANXIETY IS CURABLE, and we will find a way through it"

A.V replied: "I understand (I'm paranoid schizophrenic)- I have felt this way a lot, especially, oddly enough, when I'm most sane. I suppose because when I'm not really delusional, I'm just anxious and paranoid. When I am, I am fighting against people for my life. (Actually, for my sanity- if they ever got hold of me, I'd kill myself rather than be in their hands). But don't take this as me saying you should give up- maybe someday it will become worthwhile for you."

sureshot8595 replied: "Grow weed. You will start enjoying life ;)"

irishlady replied: "Because we are worth something in this life I have to believe this to make sense of it all I take Effexor no it's not a cure all but it does help me & I think knowing we're not alone or nuts! & we don't have to feel ashamed or weak b/c of this OK just look at all these people who have shared their stories here this in itself proves none of us are alone! None of us here knows each other but we can truly feel for each other"

gringomcnight replied: "if you medication doesn't work for you, i think it's time for to check vilift and find out how does it really works, i've been using that for almost a month."

I Have Generlized Anxiety Disorder and Agoraphobia What Should I Do? I'm afraid of going to school. In Middle School I got sick and I have been so afraid of being in that same situation. And it sucks because this year I will be going to High School and I have to go. I am homebound right now but that is not an option for next year unfortunately. I am seeing a professional and am on Celexa and Buspar. I need some advice.

Serialmom12 replied: "lexapro works great"

smokin.kush420 replied: "benzos are great for controlling anxiety ask your doc for clonazepam next time you see him"

Luvoo!!! replied: "I have the same thing. Keep taking your meds, and try practicing going places. Like, tomorrow walk out to your front yard, the next day try and get to the end of the block and so on. I know that's not really what you want to hear (trust me I know lol), but I think it's the best way to start getting out without causing yourself to much stress. Also breathing exercises are supposed to help when you feel anxious, try laying down and taking deep slow breaths, make sure your stomach is rising up and down with each breath. This helps you to breathe normally again as anxious people don't breathe properly a lot of the time and that makes you feel anxious. Also if you have to go out try and distract yourself from the anxiety by concentrating on a specific thing......like try and count how many blue things you see etc. Good luck!!!"
