Balding: Does Avodart (dutasteride) work in the long term for balding/thinning hair? I've been taking gernic Avodart called Dutas for thinning hair for two years now. Theoretically it works similar to Propecia only better as Propecia blocks one form of DHT and dutasteride blocks BOTH forms of DHT. I shedded at first as is expected to make room for healthy new hairs, the shedding stopped and my crown filled in quite well, but of course not like when I was fifteen - it was still a little thinner in the back. It stayed that way for over a year, but now, two years after starting Dutas, the shedding has begun again. The hairs that are falling out are thin and weak looking. are they ones that have been holding on all this time and are just now falling out to make room for better ones, or has the medicine stopped working and it's back to balding? Should I stop the meds or keep going? Once again there is noticable thinning in the back after 1 1/2 years of satisfactory results. Can the body build an immunity to this medicine?

Dr. SeXpert replied: "I don't know about that, but I've been using clary sage, rosemary and other essential oils for hair growth."

What is the specific birth defect caused by Dutasteride? Dutasteride, marketed as Avodart, warns that it causes a specific birth defect if handled by pregnant women. I've found out that it specifically effects the development of unborn males... but in what way? What is the birth defect and is there a treatment? I cannot seem to find that information.

Nicole replied: "Avodart may cause feminization or deformed male genitals*. It doesn't in monkey, it does in rats and rabbits. It also, in rats, causes still-births. It has not been tested in humans, but because the results were so unmistakable in lab animals, it is declared unsafe even for human testing. There is no treatment at this time that can prevent the defect if a woman is exposed to the drug while pregnant - though it's not known if every baby will be affected, or if the dosage and timing is relevant. Cosmetic surgery and hormone therapy might be used to try and make the baby more male in function and appearance. Many of these deformities will be visible on ultrasound, and a doctor and the parents can begin to form a treatment plan even before birth, though the treatments themselves will not be started until the baby is born. *More specifically, the distance from the urinary opening to the anus is decreased, the penis looks more like a large clitoris, the testicles are small or not present, the prostate and seminal vesicles are too small and the nipples are swollen like breasts."

Anyone (male) take Dutas or Avodart for thinning hair? I've been taking generic Avodart called Dutas (dutasteride) bought from Dr. Reddy's online pharmacy for nearly two years. My hair went through the normal shedding cycle, which told me it was working. It eventually stopped and my hair actually filled in pretty well. All of a sudden, a few weeks ago the shedding began again and there is once again noticeable thinning in the crown area. This is after two years when I thought it'd be over. The hairs falling out are thinner and finer than my "good" hairs, so maybe they are old DHT affected ones that are just now being replaced by new, "good" ones, or maybe the Dutas has stopped working and I'm losing what I gained over the past two years. Should I continue and wait it out, or stop taking the pills? Am I getting ripped off with bogus meds by some Indian online pharmacy?

Henry replied: "Sounds OK to me."

yagman replied: "As far as I know the only proven systemic medication effective in stopping hair loss is Propecia. Propecia stops hair loss by interfering in the breakdown of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone. Dihydro is what causes atrophy of the hair follicles. Testosterone is what creates the male type characteristics. So it stops hair loss without interfering in the action of testosterone on the body. I'm 48 and have been taking it for 8 years. It has totally stopped all my hair loss. Don't know anything about Dutas but I would be skeptical of any drug not investigated by the FDA that makes claims of stopping hair loss. Traveling salesmen have been peddling snake oils for hundreds of years to sell to people who are willing to grasp for anything to deal with a problem that causes emotional pain. My advice is to flush the Dutas down the toilet. Go see a dermatolgist and get on Propecia. IT WORKS! One word of warning. It ain't cheap. Probably about 50 to 60 bucks a month. FOREVER if you wan't to keep your hair forever."
