How to treat an allegic reaction to naproxen sodium (aleve)? So, I found out I was allergic to aleve a few months ago when my lips swelled and I broke out in hives. And I've avoided taking it since until yesterday when I took Midol which contained naproxen sodium. Last time I went to the doctor and they gave me a steroid treatment. But I want relief today but my doctor is closed on a sunday! Does benedryl make a difference? I have the tablets and Ive been using ice on my lips. Thanks!

Racheal replied: "Benadryl or call poison control 1800-222-1222, the best thing to do is to go to the ER just in case your throat closes up."

Smilingcheek replied: "Swollen lips indicates a serious reaction, you should at least contact your doctors emergency number to find out what they want you to do. I have an allergy to reglan, and was treated in the hospital for it but then kept on benedryl for a couple of days after the reaction until the drug was out of my bloodstream. Don't hesitate to go to the ER if you feel any kind of throat tightening... good luck."

Naproxen vs. Aspirin vs. Motrin? I had a very severe allergic reaction to Naproxen. Now, when I take Motrin or Aspirin, I have similar symptoms. Are these medications in any way the same? My symptoms are that I get tightness in my throat and some dizziness. I don't have stomach problems when taking the medication.

shewrites replied: "They are all anti-inflammatories. Naproxen and Motrin are more similar in that they are both non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Aspirin is a salicylate and plant-based in origin. All of these drugs have the potential to irritate your stomach with prolonged use. You don't describe what type of reaction you're having, but if you're experiencing digestive problems you might want to try an enteric (coated) aspirin, or at least make sure you're taking your medication with food and plenty of water. Edit: from your description it does seem like an allergic reaction. Tell your doctor so you can find out if that is the case and so you can get a prescription for another medication for pain relief."

Tazer replied: "Yes. These medications are all Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs). Naproxen (Aleve), Aspirin, and Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) all decrease pain and inflammation by inhibiting the same enzyme in your body. It is possible that you are allergic to all NSAIDs. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is a pain reliever that is not an NSAID. If you are taking a medication for moderate pain, you should try tylenol. If you need a medication to reduce inflammation or reduce clotting, talk to a doctor about prescription medication options."
