Will I experience any prednisone side effects if I'm on 10 mg for 2 weeks then 5 mg for a month? hi my doctor just put me on 10 mg of prednisone for 2 weeks and then im suppost to go to 5 mg for about a month. will i get the moonface or even a little bit of it. i really dont want it and i want to know if it will happen, even if its only a little bit.

Canadian Diva replied: "You will experience some side effects unfortunately. The good news is that 10 mg and then 5 mg is a very low dosage so the effects will be very minimal. I find when I have to take it (for my emphysema) I am usually on 60 mg, then a tapering dosage until down to nothing over a 4 - 6 week period. Now that is when the side effects are the worst. i was giving my son his clonidine pill at the same time i was taking my prednisone 5 mg and they got switched? i called the doctor he thought it would be ok but thought i should give him epkat just as a back up but he thought it was 10 mg but it was a 5 mg dumb!!!! i know better i feel so bad!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Neuro Dr diagnosed as Polymyositis,advised 6 prednisone 5 mg daily.Prednisolone 10mg is available. Is it OK.? I am suffering from Muscles weakness disease. If you have been prescribed 6 prednisone tablets at 5 mg, I'm guessing you mean 30 mg daily, you can take 3 tablets at 10 mg, and get the same results. There is only one difference in the tablet formation, which is 5 mg tablets contain mineral oil in the make of the tablet and 10 mg tablets do not. As for the effectiveness it is the same. Remember to take this medication at the same time daily, morning is the best, since it makes you hyper and unable to sleep, and also DO Not miss a dose. Prednisone affects the Adrenal Gland and you can go into adrenal shock if you stop taking it suddenly or without being weened off. (There is only one exception, and you can not be on prednisone prior, taken in high dosage for one week only and then discontinued immediately). Your prescribed amount is fairly high to my knowledge, I know of patients taking 1mg to 5 mg daily, but also I have been on high dosages of 50 mg to 60 mg daily and weened down slowly. Talk to the Pharmacist when you pick up your presciption."

My hubby takes a large does of Prenisolone, and it is REALLY important that you only take the dose indicated by your doctor. This medication needs to be weaned down after use, so taking the 5mg is the lowest does you can take, and so it is not advisable that you start taking 10mg. Try buying one of those tablet cutters and cutting it in half. Hope that helps :-)"

For example, I have seen prescriptions written where the patient takes 6 prednisone 5mg on day 1, then tapers down by 1 tablet a day until the med is finished. prednisone 20 mg..for 5 days..what are the side effects? i have been diagnosed with asthma and the doc prescribed me advair 500/50 once every 12 hours..an albuterol inhaler for emergencies ..veramyst spray...and prednisone 20mg once a day for 5 days....i was reading a couple of other answers and they all seemed really scary...u get a poofy face and u gain weight and u have mood swings..u get depressed and anxious all this other stuff...i have had a past history of depression and anxiety...still have slight hints of it...but i dont want them coming back again...im really scared about taking prednisone...someone help plz..

ladydye_5 replied: "with a short course you shouldnt have HORRIBLE side effects. you may experience an increase in appetite. you may experience hot flashes (these are the worst for me). the benefits outweigh the risks. the prednisone will help with the inflammation in the lungs making it easier to breathe. most of the "bad" side effects you are talking about are for long term use. a short prescription isnt that bad. i am put on short term use a few times a year for other conditions and for me,,,,it is worth the extra pound, and sleeping in a tshirt because of hot flashes to me. if you are that concerned about it i would talk to your dr/nurse."

The reports you hear are in long term steroid use such as in children and adults with rheumatoid arthritis or kids with muscular dystrophy. 5 days of prednisone may make you a little hungry but you should not have an issue. The same for the mood swings.5 days is not going to cause a problem. If you are concerned to your MD and or your mental health provider."

GalantaEire replied: "ok, if your on prednisone for more than a month then you start to slightly see the swelling cheeks, etc. but dont worry it cannot happen in only 5 days. the swelling is due to the fact that the medication makes your body retain salt which causes the facial swelling, but it takes many weeks to see the effects. it sucks, but u dont have to worry about it for only 5 days and 20 mg."

I am taking Prednisone 20 mg for 5 days and i can't sleep, is it ok to take tylenol PM with it? The drugs in the Tylenol PM are Acetaminophen, and Diphenhydramine HCl

Has anyone experienced any side effects of prednisone on cats? Although it is very rare, my cat was just dx'd with Addison's disease. He will ultimately be on 2.5 mg of prednisone for the rest of his life. From what I have researched, it is a low dosage for his weight (11 pounds). I'm am still concerned about the long term health effects on his immune system as the natural (although limited) production of his adrenal glands could be compromised. Does anyone have any experience with this? Has anyone tried any homepathic alternatives?

Cris H replied: "My cat is on 10 mg predisolone 2x per day for feline lymphoma. She experiences whisker loss, increased thirst, and increased hunger. The thirst and hunger were a good side effect for her condition, as she needed to drink more and gain some weight. She is also slightly more active. Do not know about the adrenals or homeophathics. About 5 months ago i was taking 60 mg of prednisone a day for my rheumatoid arthritis, while on this....? I gained about 10 pounds within a time period of approximately 3 months. I was then weaned off of the medicine, but in the past month have been put back on it, 40 mg a day. I am on the last few days of this cycle so hopefully it is the last time i will be taking prednisone, ever. Has anyone had previous experiences with weight gain, if so how did you lose the extra weight and approximately how long did it take? I look back on pictures from before the prednisone treatment and wish i could get back to having a thinner face, especially before junior prom at the end of the school year.

trishopesisters replied: "Prednazone almost always causes weight gain, sometimes in extreme amounts. Often after the patient has finished the drug the weight is fairly easy to lose provided you follow a decent diet and exercise regime. Ask your prescribing MD for help."

nurseTINA replied: "It must be hard, seeing yourself a way you wish you didn't have to. But, it's very common for a steroid, like prednisone, to do this, especially causing puffiness in the face. Don't be discouraged, just try to make up for it by exercising more and eating right. If you're not on that forever, you won't look like that forever. Also, there are other treatments for RA you should try if you're not satisfied."
