Does caffeine really cause dehydration? I've been told this by some as a reason to avoid soft drinks, but I've been told by others that the culprit in soft drinks is actually the carbonation, not the caffeine. I ask because I tend to drink a lot of iced tea, and have heard both good and bad things about doing so. I've tried WebMD, but haven't really found an answer.

heterophobicgirl replied: "actually, I believe the culprit is all of the Sodium in carbonated drinks."

autyauna replied: "iced tea is fine b/s it has alot of water"

hillbilly_coon replied: "Yes it is a diuretic"

howlettlogan replied: "Yes it does. The carbonation is another matter entirely."

xxgq replied: "Yes it does. As a coffee shop barista we always have water available to our customers. as just drinking coffee alone will dehydrate you."

Beefsteak replied: "Yes, caffiene is a mild diuretic (makes you pee). "Although caffeine does not appear to significantly alter water balance or body temperature during exercise, dehydration is a potential concern because caffeine is a mild diuretic. Some athletes may also experience abdominal cramps and diarrhea related to the large intestine contractions caused by caffeine. The combination of dehydration and cramping can have particularly detrimental effects on performance""

whatshisname replied: "no"

soussanv replied: "yes of course it does.oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo"

Missbecky replied: "Yes, caffine causes dehydration."

mattinsac67 replied: "Yes I was getting blood drawn and I had about 6 cups of coffee the other day and I told the nurse who had trouble getting blood drawn that. She said coffee dehydrates you. Yes its the caffeine"

Trader replied: "Check out for a good explainantion."

lexxus_gs_400 replied: "Caffeine does NOT cause dehydration. Carbonation in soft drinks and the effect of tea or coffe is water release. I cannot remember the technical word for it."

tiffanywood31 replied: "Iced tea isn't AS bad since it's mostly water, but yes caffeine is a diuretic which causes, if consumed in large quantities without water replenishing what's lost, dehydration. In general, your best bet, if you need a soda would be something clear like Sprite and it's caffeine free. Dark cola drinks are vicious to your bones, causing osteoporosis. But I digress. You can consume an average amount of caffeine (one soda or coffee) daily as long as you double up on your H2O to compensate. Hope that helps!"

cairoandde replied: "I would think that caffeine before carbonation would cause dehydration. Im a big coffee drinker and have to drink more water because of it. Iced tea shouldn't be so bad though!!"

carolinethefierce replied: "Soft drinks are NOT a good solution for thirst b/c of the caffeine, sugar, & sodium in them. Caffeine is a diuretic, which causes the body to lose water, which is the opposite of hydrating yourself! Sugar & sodium both increase your thirst. Iced tea is no better for you than soft drinks, b/c of all the sugar in them. Avoid iced tea entirely - there's nothing redeeming about it, health-wise. Opt for herbal teas instead - they have no calories, caffeine, sugar, or sodium, & may actually INCREASE your metabolism."

julz replied: "supposedly, caffeine is a diruetic which means that instead of rehydrating you it takes more water out of your body while it is processing. so it is not the carbonisation process but the caffeine thats doing you harm. Try a week without any caffeine and then go back onto it and see how much you pee!!!"

Trevor replied: "Most people believe that caffeine does cause dehyrdation but a recent study by Professor Armstrong at the University of Connecticut showed that caffeine is no more or a diuretic than water is. You can read more on the International Food Information Council's website - Diuretic or not, caffeine isn't the best thing for you so you should avoid it anyway."

okieblu replied: "Caffeine is a diuretic-it causes a person to sluff off water in the body and can cause dehydration. Carbonation in soft drinks isn't good for you either, but for other reasons. If you drink alot of iced tea, try the decaf type. It still has some caffeine, but not as much, and you will still get some of the benefits from tea drinking. Green tea-usually served hot-is good for folks with heart problems."

Why does caffeine give headaches when you consume it as well as give it up? I remember that caffeine causes dehydration which causes headaches, but it doesn't make sense to me that cutting caffeine out of a diet will cause headaches, too. Any people out there with medical training?

♥Meggie♥ replied: "Withdrawl"

phantomlimb7 replied: "Caffeine is a vasoconstrictor, this means it acts on blood vessels to shrink their diameter. This is why it is included as an adjunct to many headache remedies along with aspirin. Caffeine is also addictive, physiologically. Your body gets used to it and the headaches are a symptom of caffeine withdrawal. Think of your blood vessels sort of rebounding now that you've removed the effects of caffeine. Nicotine has a similar affect and similar symptoms of withdrawal."

justcurious replied: "It is a drug that is addictive so it screams for more."

kndykisz replied: "cutting the caffeine out basically is a withdrawl symptom from not getting the caffeine.....caffeine is addictive and that is what is causing the withdrawl symptoms..."

Does decaf coffee and tea still cause dehydration? Or is it just the caffeine that does that?

KYRA replied: "Great question. Here's a star. Who knows the answer ??? (I don't, obviously) ."

barb s replied: "It's just the caffeine according to an article I just looked up on the web"

fox5nyc replied: "TEA NO,AS ITS QUITE NATUREL,COFFEE YEA,AS THE BEANS CAN MAKE U THIRSTY IF U DRINK A LOT...WHATS WRONG WITH YOU,FILL IT WITH WHIZ AND CAFFINE I DO......"

Will drinking cold water cancel out the negative affects of drinking caffeine heavy drinks? Since caffeine automatically causes you to feel dehydrated once you drink it, and the feeling of dehydration makes your metabolism slow down. Drinking cold water would just eliminate the feeling of dehydration and that would eliminate the damage right? Not only that, but that would do away with the cravings you get after drinking caffeine also. So, that would make drinking caffeine heavy drinks perfectly healthy as long as I drink cold water afterwards right?

klaryuk replied: "not cold water any water, well not toilet water or washing up water but you get the idea, the temperature has nothing to do with it."

curmudgeon replied: "no"

blueridgeliving replied: "No. Drinking water would only alleviate your dehydration. Caffeine has MANY negative effects, it's really a horrible drug. One should drink no more than a couple of cups of coffee a day. That amount has some benefits, any more would be detrimental. "There have been many studies over the years dealing with caffeine and human health. These studies have looked at the potential adverse effects of caffeine in such areas as: general toxicity (e.g., muscle tremors, nausea, irritability); cardiovascular effects (e.g., heart rate, cholesterol, blood pressure); effects on calcium balance and bone health (e.g., bone density, risk of fractures); behavioural effects in both adults and children (e.g., anxiety, mood changes, attentiveness); potential links to cancer; and effects on reproduction (e.g., male and female fertility, birth weight) Health Canada scientists recently reviewed these studies and found that: The general population of healthy adults is not at risk for potential adverse effects from caffeine if they limit their caffeine intake to 400-450 mg per day; People who get an adequate daily amount of calcium have greater protection against the possible adverse effects of caffeine on bone health. For most people, choosing foods according to Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating can provide the calcium needed for good health; Compared to the general adult population, children are at increased risk for possible behavioural effects from caffeine; and Women of childbearing age are at increased risk of possible reproductive effects. " "

jacko replied: "No! Limit them to 2/day, if no coffee, tea, chocolate, or other caffeine containing products are consumed, and drink at least 8 x 250 ml glasses of water, daily."

tania replied: "all i know is that caffeine is not healthy and we decrease the intake of it"

Loll replied: "Water, tepid or warm rehydrate your system whilst flushing all the toxins that your body accumulates.Heavy drinking will always do harm to your organs plus the blood. if taken in access.Your kidney and heart work overtime with alcohol.Water is not a cure for heavy drinking sessions."

PATRICIA MS replied: "Coffee is full of antioxidants. It flushes your system with the stimulant caffeine. Take a multi-vitamin. With tea/ soda also."

Can dehydration cause heart rate to increase? I haven't been drinking as much water as I should...or any at all and I've been very thirsty lately. I'm starting to drink a few bottles of water everyday now, but I noticed my heart is beating faster, kind of like when you get nervous and your heart rate speeds up. Is this a side effect of dehydration? I haven't had any caffeine today so that is not a cause.

Bobby A replied: "Yes it puts stress on your heart."

Pogue Mahone replied: "Yes."

BSherman replied: "Dehydration reduces blood volume and the heart beats faster to compensate. Why are you deliberately dehydrating yourself? This behavior is potentially lethal. Stop doing it. Drink normal quantities of fluids every day."

Why do people say coffee cures a hang over? Hangovers are caused by dehydration, not enough water is getting to your brain. All caffeine does is increase dehydration. Bobby Bo- Interesting. Good answer. Didn't know that. What about the effects I mentioned though?

Prince Cataan replied: "Coffee wakes you up and gets you moving, some people think that moving around will help a bad hangover. I think that's partially true, the second I get off my hungover butt I start to feel better. Caffeine will also increase the effectiveness of pain medicine like aspirin (e.g. excedrine = aspirin+caffeine)."

Bobby Bo replied: "Caffeine opens blood vessels and helps relieve pressure on the brain that adds to a headache. Caffeine is in many over the counter headache medicines."

kdfirekat replied: "exactly. somewhere along the line, some ignorant a$$ decided that, since drinking too much makes you sleepy, and coffee is known as a pick-me-up, it MUST work.... ;-)"

BrandonR replied: "Because people believe old wives tales and other crap (i.e. religion) without questioning or examining it themselves. Many argue that taking information at an early age and believing it without question is an evolutionary trait. It's why people today still believe other BS such as going outside in the cold will give you pneumonia. Stupid people. What can you do?"

Jessica Rabbit replied: "It's all about the caffeine,in a lot of headache medicines there is a good amount of caffeine present. Hangover=Migraine/Headache. Caffeine in headache medications * Adding 130 mg of caffeine to a regular, two-tablet dose of common ingredients found pain relievers (aspirin and acetaminophen) makes them relieve headache pain about 40% better than they do without caffeine. Caffeine also helps your body absorb these medications, allowing you to get back to your daily life faster. * Because analgesics work better when they have caffeine added, you may be able to take less medicine when you have a headache. And because even non-prescription medications are real medicine with the potential for side effects, taking less reduces the risks associated with inappropriate use."

chris m replied: "Coffee is a diuretic and therefore makes you pee more than normal, add that to the fact that you are already dehydrated from the night before and you’re just asking for the headache to last longer. You can’t beat a good pint of water. This is the only point that’s tried and tested. The nature of alcohol makes you visit the little girls/boys room more often therefore making you dehydrated, it also reduces the amount of potassium in your body which is what causes the dizzyness, cramps etc. When dehydrated the brain shrinks away from your skull slightly and is not as well supported hence the pounding headaches. Best you can do for yourself is re-hydrate as much as possible."

What is the best possible way to cure a headache in the shortest amount of time possible? Tylenol takes forever plus I think my body is immune to it. Aspirin also takes forever. Can't exactly sleep right now. Im guessing the cause is due to either: a. dehydration b. caffeine withdrawel c. the aspatame drink I had last night

Kevin replied: "i take ibeprofen(or however u spell it)"

Out of control replied: "Drink cold water...which can help with the pain AND dehydration if that's the problem. Put a cold wet washcloth on your forehead."

ilebcm3 replied: "drink lots of water and eat a meal that you want. (wont hurt your head) and then watch tv or rest for like 15 min (just dont think about it) and you should be good!"

Jerry replied: "cold water"

B.B. replied: "Push your fingers into the nerve endings behind your ears. The headache goes away while you press down, and after pressing for a few minutes, the headache will stay gone even when you take your hands off."

geetar picker replied: "drink water, dont drink coffee, and headaches dont go away to fast"

annie replied: "exercise..go for a walk..run"

Seeker replied: "Very hot bath."

bubbbles replied: "try to sleep more and then take an extra tylonal"

heyhey! replied: "lay down and relax... watch tv... take some medicine... stuff like that."

Doug replied: "Headache Tablets.. Ibuprofen is good."

♥Laura♥ replied: "u could always go to the hospital say u have a migrane and they will give u a shot of vicadin ive done that before"

Kadi replied: "here are the steps... 1. Take Ibuprofen 2. Drink Lots of water 3. Eat so the Ibuprofen kicks in 4. TRY and sleep or at least rest! GOod lUck with the HeaD AcHe!!!"

SirSaun replied: "Take a headache pill (which ever brand you seem fitting) and then eat something, like a sandwich. It'll go away in less than 30 minutes."

Ullanda C replied: "lol going to sleep... or maybe taking Advil or even laying down....? No one around you talking and making sounds and noises. Have the TV off. Maybe eat something like Veggies or Fruit? Plus just TRY going to sleep."

loki4200 replied: "Consume some caffeine and take Acetaminophen (check the bottle for recommended dosages). Then drink a lot of water and stay in a cool dark location, out of direct sunlight. The caffeine will stop the withdrawl if it is indeed withdrawl, and it also acts as a vasoconstrictor and in some studies have shown that it can help subside a headache. You can also safely take Ibuprofen with acetaminophen."

Cindy J replied: "I use ibuprofen also and many headaches are caused by dehydration so drink lots of water. One thing that works for me is to take your thumb and put firm pressure right at the where the back of your neck meets your skull, it somehow relieves pressure of a headache for me sometimes. Also a cold cloth or ice pack on your head.Good luck."

U Khan replied: "I will tell you a natural way.Its so simple just sit outside the home and feel the natural air or park will be better place. You can also have a lemonade which will really affect your head. The more you relax the more lightest your brain will be.I hope this will work out. Good Luck!"

Scott1120 replied: "If over the counter drugs are not working for you, try this, if you have any peppers, eat a pepper or eat something that is spicy. For myself, after I eat something that is spicy such as mexican food my headache is usually gone within 30 to 45 minutes.Even if you have crushed red peppers that will work as well."

Can I change my skin type? I am eighteen years old. I am in my first year of college and have decided that there are some bad habits I would like to change. I NEVER drink water. I don't even have one glass a day. Surprisingly my skin is not very dry, but I know eventually it will. I also drink occasionally and that can contribute to skin dehydration. I drink only diet sodas. I know they are bad, but I love caffeine. (Another cause of dehydration.) Is it possible that if I began drinking the recommended eight glasses of water daily I could essentially, have better, younger looking skin when I get older. Also, could the dehydration of my skin cause me to have darker circles under my eyes. Any advice? Suggestions?

Jamie W replied: "i would not drink 8 glasses of water a day. Try 4 to start. remeber you do get a portion of the recommended water amount from your food. But, yes drinking water is good for you and your skin. just dont go crazy. too much can have its effects on ur body. gooood luck:)))"

Lonewolf replied: "I drink at least 10 glasses of water a day and it dramatically improved my skin. I can only recommend it."

I'm confused. Is coffee good for you or bad for you? I always thought that caffeine increased free-radicals into your body and therefore were the complete opposite of anti-oxidants. But I keep reading that they have anti-oxidants in them? I don't get it. I always thought that if you apply coffee to the skin it can have benefits but that if you drank it (especially in high quantity) you were at risk of severe problems caused by toxins and dehydration...?

Dave C replied: "Everything in moderation... but coffee is one of those drinks that's probably best kept to a minimum. There are food that have more nutrients and antioxidants than coffee."

Gavster replied: "Yes! despite the roomers going around, there is a huge amount of scientific and testimonial evidence supporting good effects. The most significant may be the reversing effects to Alzheimer's ! also increased concentration and reducing chances of several cancers. The milk and sugar added are far less beneficial. Try to drink Organic. its more expensive but non organic coffee crops are heavily sprayed with pesticides. 4-5 cups /day is OK."

Here's some info on Pre-***::::: Precum or pre-ejaculate is a fluid coming from the penis and is produced by man’s bulbourethral glands. The main bulbourethral gland is the prostate, and there are also few smaller glands that are situated in the body of the penis. They produce clear liquid that is similar to other mucous excretion of the body, the main difference is the different contents of proteins and increased concentration of sugars like fructose. Precum’s main purpose is cleaning the urethra from any bacteria or the leftovers of urine, also precum is a lubricant that is used for lubrication of the glans and foreskin during the intercourse. Depending on the person precum may or may not contain small amounts of spermatozoids, the chances of pregnancy are small but, since in theory, only one sperm is enough to get a woman pregnant there’s still a chance that the pregnancy will happen. It would be the safest to use condoms during the entire duration of the sexual intercourse. SO WRAP IT UP if your NOT ready to have a BABY!!! You can just tell me THANKS 4 THE INFO!! LOL
